Anchorage records its wettest year ever in 2022

It is now official, Anchorage recorded its wettest year ever.

According to weather data collected, in 2022, we have seen 27.65 inches of precipitation — this also includes the water ratio equivalent of snow.

Between snow and rain, Anchorage has seen a record amount of precipitation this year, and December isn't over yet. The latest round of snow — currently up to more than 18 inches for the month in the city — has put Anchorage in the top spot for "Wettest Years".

A record snowfall over the past six years lasted 30 hours non-stop in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan. The height of the snow cover was more than one meter.

Utility services did not have time to clean the streets, roads were closed due to bad weather in the region, school students were transferred to distance learning, the Astana TV channel reports.

More than 200 utility workers are resolving the snowfall consequences.

Multiple waterspouts spotted off Florida panhandle coast

Just off of Panama City Beach waterspouts developed near Boardwalk Condos.

Strong storms have led to a few waterspouts today.

A warm front passing over the Panhandle today created very favorable conditions for strong, rotating storms to develop. Reports of waterspouts came in near the County Pier in Panama City Beach around 3:35pm. A waterspout was spotted off of Blue Mountain Beach around 12:45pm. There was also a report of one over the Choctawhatchee Bay around 11:30am.

There haven't been any damage reports associated with these storms just yet.

Spain hit by heavy rain, floods and hurricane-force winds

Rain and heavy winds forecast across Spain.

The arrival of Storm Efraín has already seen parts of Spain experience heavy rainfall, flooding and strong winds, with 35 provinces currently on alert and more of the same weather forecast for Tuesday and the rest of week.

Most of Spain may not have the festive snowfall that much of northern Europe currently has, but it will experience heavy rains and possible flooding over the next week instead.

There will be "abundant rainfall" throughout the country, especially in the south and west of the peninsula, Spain's State Meteorological agency AEMET reported on Monday, warning that there could be up to 80 litres of rain in just 12 hours in some areas and more than 100 litres in 48 hours.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be two of the worst days according to the agency, especially in the southern interior of the Spanish mainland. As the videos below reflect, some of these areas already experienced heavy rainfall and floods on Sunday and Monday.

A total of 35 provinces are now on alert for heavy rain, strong wind and big waves.

The city of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is on red alert after more heavy rain and flooding overnight, 12 to 13 December 2022.

The city saw extreme flooding just days ago when Lisbon recorded over 80 mm of rain in 24 hours on 07 December 2022. One person died in a flooded basement home in Algés in the municipality of Oeiras.

More heavy rain struck from 12 December affecting Lisbon District. Several severe weather-related incidents were also reported in the district of Setúbal. The weather station at Tapada da Ajuda in Lisbon recorded 65.6 mm of rain in 3 hours early on 13 December. The city of Almada in Setúbal recorded 59.7 mm of rain in 5 hours.

Hailstorm kills 7 in Bolivian village graduation celebration

Seven people attending a school graduation ceremony were killed when a roof fell during an intense hailstorm in Santiago de Pacharia, a small rural community in the high plains of Bolivia, local officials said Monday.

Two more bodies were pulled from the wreckage and accumulated hailstones, hours after five bodies were found initially, according to Adelio Velásquez, an official with the mayor's office in the district of Achacachi, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of La Paz.

The Andean region has suffered a severe drought, but this weekend much of Bolivia experienced heavy rain, which often falls as hail in higher altitudes.

The storm is expected to reach the Great Basin and the Desert Southwest by Monday, the Weather Service said.

A large winter storm system slammed into the western US over the weekend, blanketing mountain areas with heavy snow before taking aim at the South, where it's expected to bring severe weather, with strong winds, hail and tornadoes possible.

More than 15 million people in 14 states are under some sort of a winter weather alert as the powerful storm moves across the county.

The storm already brought avalanche warnings to parts of the West, shuttered major highways as conditions became icy and triggered flood watches.

The storm blanketed some mountain areas of drought-parched California with thick snow, including Soda Springs in the northern part of the state, which received 60 inches of snow in 48 hours.

Heavy rain causes flash flooding in parts of Bosnia, Croatia

Overflowing rivers in parts of Bosnia and Croatia have flooded dozens of houses and roads, prompting authorities to warn residents in affected areas to prepare to evacuate their homes if heavy rainfall does not subside.

Police in Bosnia confirmed workers found a body on Sunday while clearing a rain-fueled landslide that buried a section of a regional road in the northern part of the country, near the city of Prijedor.

Several other main and regional roads in north and northwestern Bosnia were blocked due to flooding or landslides and a number of local communities in the area introduced emergency measures overnight Sunday.

Torrential rains batter Antalya, Turkey

In the southern province of Antalya's Kumluca and Finike, "the heaviest torrential rain of the last 50 years" has caused flooding in the two districts, while houses and workplaces have been flooded due to overflowing streams.

Schools were suspended for one day due to the flooding in the two districts, while there have been no reports of casualties or injuries so far.

Hundreds of greenhouses were flooded in Kumluca, known as the greenhouse capital, Mayor Mustafa Köleoğlu noted.

The ground floors of many buildings and detached houses were flooded. While the support of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) was requested to help the citizens trapped in their homes, the municipality staff also tried to reach the stranded.
