"This is the first time seeing anything like this on the lake," said Doug Obst, who has been living at McKinley Landing for over 3 years.

"I could see this funnel cloud thing as I was looking down to the lake."

Obst shared his video with Castanet and said "it looked like there was a lot of what might be steam coming from the water maybe because it's so cold outside."

Hawaii is no exception to the severe winter weather.

The road to Mauna Kea's summit remains closed as crews clear piles of snow that fell during a strong winter storm that barreled over the state earlier this week.

The University of Hawaii at Hilo Center for Maunakea Stewardship said the road is likely to be closed for several more days.

The recent storm brought winds of more than 100 mph, sleet, freezing rain and heavy snow to the mountain.

And once the clouds cleared, crews found snow drifts of up to 10 feet along a 1/2-mile stretch of the road.

Arctic air mass shattering cold weather records in Alberta, Canada

As Alberta remained mired in a December deep freeze on Tuesday, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) revealed this week's cold snap has already unofficially smashed over two-dozen weather records.

"An Arctic air mass continues to bring extremely cold temperatures to Alberta," the weather agency said on its website. "On Dec. 19, temperatures plummeted over the province, leading to many daily minimum temperature records being broken in the evening hours."

Global Edmonton meteorologist Jesse Beyer noted Tuesday that "wind chill values could drop close to -50 overnight tonight in parts of the province."

"Wind chills between -40 and -47 can lead to frostbite on exposed skin in five to 10 minutes, (while at) -48 and colder it can set in as soon as two minutes," he added.

"The cold will stick around for the entire work week, improving to the -5 to -10 range through the weekend."

A bitter and potentially deadly blast of arctic air is continuing to charge its way across the U.S., dropping wind chills to as low as between negative 50 and negative 70 degrees across the northern Plains, and 30 below zero in the Midwest, triggering rare Hard Freeze Warnings along the Gulf Coast, and helping to fuel a monster blizzard that will bring those frigid temperature across the Great Lakes and into the Northeast.

"Behind this storm is where it's cold," FOX Weather meteorologist Britta Merwin said. "Look at Denver right now. A feels-like temperature of negative 34 degrees. So, if you're waking up in Chicago at 27 (degrees) and feeling like it's cold, there's a whole new reality coming your way. Behind this cold front, it gets dangerous."

The dangerously cold arctic air began its week-long journey by surging to the south out of Canada last weekend, dropping low temperatures Monday morning to negative 20 degrees and lower across northern Montana.

Heavy rainfall caused flooding and landslides in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil on 20 December 2022.

State Civil Defence reported incidents of rain damage, flooding or landslides in the 6 municipalities of Jaraguá do Sul, Ilhota, Itapema, Porto Belo, Penha and Camboriú. In total, almost 190 people have been displaced from their homes. Civil Defence said the severe weather conditions have hindered damage assessments and the numbers of affected and displaced are likely to rise. More heavy rain is expected.

The municipality of Camboriú is among the worst affected areas. About 60% of the municipality's territory is flooded, according to data from the Military Fire Brigade and the Secretariat of Civil Protection and Defence. As much as 259.3 mm of rain fell in 24 hours to 20 December 2022.

Iceland nightmare for thousands of travellers stuck at Keflavik airport during heavy snow

Thousands of airline passengers have been stuck for days at Keflavik airport in Iceland due to extreme weather.

Heavy snow and blizzards have forced the almost complete closure of the international airport serving Iceland since Saturday.

The Foreign Office warned: "There is a severe weather warning across the whole of Iceland and many roads are closed.

"Police are advising people to stay at home. High winds and dangerous icy road conditions are causing major flight disruption and affecting movement to/from Keflavik international airport due to road closures."

Lightning bolt kills 18 cattle in Zimbabwe

A bolt of lightning struck and killed 18 cattle worth US$7 000 on Sunday in Chief Chireya's area in Gokwe North District.

One of the two herders who were tending the cattle in the veld was struck by lightning and thrown several metres away but survived.

The other one almost suffocated after one of the animals, which was struck by lightning fell on top of him.

Gokwe North district development co-ordinator (DDC) Martin Musakanda confirmed the incident.

The mainland isn't the only one experiencing a major winter storm. Just a week after Mauna Loa stopped erupting, Winter Storm Warnings were issued for Hawaii's Big Island.

The National Weather Service issued the alert for heavy and blowing snow on Monday, with the Winter Storm Warning in effect until 6 a.m. HST on Tuesday.

Up to 8 inches of snow and winds gusting as high as 100 mph are possible on Big Island Summits above 10,500 feet.

Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano, sits at 13,680 feet above sea level, and Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano, is just over 13,800 feet. Both are expected to see near-blizzard conditions.

At least 20 people have been injured - with some knocked unconscious - in a mass emergency onboard a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Arizona after it encountered severe turbulence.

Passengers were nearing the end of their seven-hour flight from Phoenix to Honolulu on Sunday morning when many were thrown out of their seats.

At a press conference on Sunday afternoon, Jon Snook, the Chief Operating Officer of Hawaiian Airlines confirmed that the seatbelt sign was on at the time. He said it was the 'worst case of turbulence' that he had ever encountered during his seven years with the airline.

It was confirmed that 11 people were seriously hurt, including several children and a 14-month-old baby. Nine others suffered from minor injuries and from those seven decided to take the bus to hospital for further treatment.

Areas of southern Thailand recorded more than 500 mm of rain in 24 hours on 18 December 2022.

Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) flooding in the southern provinces of Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Phatthalung, Satun, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. A total of 49 districts and 51,543 households have been affected.

The hardest hit areas were Narathiwat, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla Provinces.

In Narathiwat, 3 people died after being swept away by flood waters, DDPM said. Almost 30,000 households across 13 districts have been affected by flooding. Affected districts include Sukhirin, Si Sakhon, Rueso, Ra-ngae, Chanae, Mueang Narathiwat, Cho-airong, Su-ngai Padi, Bacho, Waeng, Su-ngai Kolok, Tak Bai and Yi-ngo.
