Wettest March in 100 years in North and Central India, weather dept says

New Delhi: This month has been the "wettest" March in northern and central parts of the country in the past 100 years, the Indian meteorological department (IMD) on Sunday said and predicted more rains in the coming two weeks.

IMD DG L S Rathore said due to the rains, there has been extensive damage to field and horticulture crops as well as vegetables in various parts of the country.

"The ordeal is not yet over. Though March as we all know was very wet, it was to the extent that after 1915, this was the wettest March particularly in north India right up to central India," he said.

"But in the next two weeks also there seems to be a possibility or higher possibility of wetness," he said.

Rains on Sunday lashed many parts of north India, including Kashmir Valley where several houses were damaged and Srinagar-Jammu national highway shut due to landslides.

A powerful earthquake rattled the South Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea on Monday, prompting officials to issue a tsunami warning for vast swathes of the Pacific and as far north as Russia.

The magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck at a depth of 65 kilometers (40 miles), about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of the town of Kokopo in northeastern Papua New Guinea, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said hazardous tsunami waves could hit coasts located within 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) of Kokopo, with waves between 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) possible for Papua New Guinea.

Landslide buries part of village in Java after heavy rains

A landslide killed six in Java, an official said on Sunday.
Twelve people were killed and 11 houses buried after a landslide triggered by heavy rain in Indonesia's main island of Java, an official said Sunday.

The landslide hit Tegal Panjang village in Sukabumi district in west Java late Saturday after a particularly heavy downpour, according to national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

"We found all 12 bodies," he said in an update, revising the earlier death toll of 10 and two missing.

He said heavy rain caused a cliff to collapse and hit the village, burying 11 houses.

Flooding caused by the heaviest rains to hit northern Chile in decades has left at least three people dead and 22 missing, officials say.

The torrential storms, which began late on Tuesday, also caused mudslides and rivers to breach their banks, stranding thousands of residents.

Chile's national emergency office (ONEMI) said nearly 61,000 people were without power and almost 50,000 lacked drinking water in the usually arid regions of Coquimbo, Atacama and Antofagasta.

Two of the fatalities were in the Atacama region while the third was in the neighbouring city of Antofagasta, the deputy interior minister said.

Twenty-two people were reported missing.

President Michelle Bachelet travelled to the affected areas to assess damage and help lead rescue efforts.

"We're doing everything humanly possible to get to where [those affected by the catastrophe] are as quickly as possible," Ms Bachelet said.

The government declared a state of emergency, ordering the military to coordinate support operations and take control of public order in the Atacama area.

Seven people were killed and more were feared dead in Peru after a massive landslide buried parts of a town amid heavy rains, authorities said on Tuesday.

Six were missing and 25 injured in the disaster in Chosica, some 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) east of Lima, said Alfredo Murgueytio, the head of the National Civil Defense Institute, Indeci.

"There are likely more dead bodies under the debris," Murgueytio said on local broadcaster RPP.

TV images showed water and mud rushing over the town's sloped streets and a distraught woman waving a picture of a missing girl.

The main road connecting Lima to the center of Peru, a top global producer of copper and gold, remained blocked since Monday, police said.

A heavy downpour for more than one hour around noon Tuesday in inner Bangkok has caused floods on several roads and traffic jams.

Traffic police reported at least seven locations in Bangkok were flooded.

In some areas, the water is as high as the footpath level.

The flooded areas are Asok Montri Road, some sections of Phetchaburi and Ratchadaphisek roads, Soi Suan Phlu, Sukhumvit Sois 1, 2 and 24, Phloenchit Road, Mitmaitri Road near the Thai-Japanese Stadium in Din Daeng and Silom Road.

20,000 affected by flooding in Boca do Acre, Brazil

More than 20,000 people have been affected by flooding caused by the swollen Purus River in Boca do Acre in Amazonas State, Brazil.

Defesa Civil Amazonas (Amazonas state civil defense) have distributed more than 36 tons of humanitarian aid to flood victims, which includes food, medicine, bedding, mosquito nets, drinking water, and water filters.

"We ... are working on the needs of the population and municipal deficiencies caused by this natural disaster," said the Secretary of Defesa Civil Amazonas, Colonel Roberto Rocha.

At least 70 families have been forced from their homes and are being housed in emergency tents. Authorities say that 8 out of the 9 local districts have been affected. Defesa Civil Amazonas reported that the city's water treatment plant has been damaged in the floods. Maize and banana crops have also been flooded.

Weather services issued multiple alerts Saturday for Cincinnati and several other Midwest cities Saturday as the Ohio River rose toward its highest level in nearly two decades. Rains could push the river just a few feet short of the levels seen in the 1997 flood that marked one the river's most severe on record. Local communities have evacuated residents from high-risk areas.

The Ohio River Forecast Center predicts the river could crest at 58 feet -- six feet above minimum flood levels -- by Sunday, according to local reports. The river reached 64 feet in 1997, marking one of the most serious floods the area had seen in decades. The 1997 flood resulted in power cuts for thousands of Ohioans and an estimated $180 million in damage, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Torrential rains have killed 62 people, more than half of them children, in the Angolan town of Lobito, official news agency Angop said on Thursday, citing firefighters.

The Bairro Novo neighbourhood of Lobito, located on the Atlantic coast about 500 kilometres south of the capital Luanda, was worst affected by the downpours on the night from Wednesday to Thursday, with the water up to three metres deep in places, the agency added.

Thirty-five of the 62 dead were children, it said.

President Jose Eduardo dos Santos asked the provincial government to help the families affected by the tragedy, while offering his condolences to the relatives of the dead, a presidency statement said.

Violent storms come to Angola every spring, causing landslides and floods that hit the country's poor neighbourhoods the hardest.

One person was already killed in a storm on Tuesday that also destroyed 137 houses and left more than 400 families homeless in Luanda, the local government said.
