Landslides and floods caused by the heavy rainfall in the central Greek prefecture of Trikala have led residents of several communities to evacuate their homes and move to safer ground.

Residents of the Pylis municipality were forced to move to relatives' homes in drier areas, according to the Athens Macedonian News Agency (AMNA).

Pylis Mayor Kostas Karavas told AMNA that more families have been asked to leave their homes, while Deputy Regional Governor Christos Michalakis declared Pylis to be in a state of emergency.

In Valtino, Trikala, waters from canals flooded the area. In Matsukeika, the waters of Anapodos river have surrounded the village and flooded livestock facilities.

A new storm system forecast to form in the central U.S. threatened to bring additional weather misery to areas struggling to recover from a relentless series of weekend thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Roughly 70 separate rivers are now in flood stage as of midday Monday, the National Weather Service said.

The new weather system will begin a three-day romp through the lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys sometime Tuesday, weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce said.

"After a few dry days, rain will return to some of the waterlogged cities in those regions, exacerbating the flooding situation," Dolce said.

Overall, more than 250 river gauges reported levels above flood stage from the Great Lakes to Texas, Dolce said. (Each river can have several gauges.)

The greatest issues in coming days will be in Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia on Wednesday into early Thursday.

"As if the Day of Judgement were at hand": The Great Wind of 1362

The Great Wind of 1362
Some of the most vivid accounts we have from the Middle Ages are those that detail calamities and natural disasters. Such was the case when a massive winter storm struck northwestern Europe on January 15, 1362. In England this event would be called 'The Great Wind'.

Among those who would record this event was the Chronicle of Anonymous of Canterbury. The person who wrote it lived in the later part of the 14th century and was likely a monk at Canterbury Cathedral. While he was reporting on the news that a joust would be held in London on January 17th, the chronicler switches his focus to explain what then happened on Saturday, January 15th:

Comment: It wouldn't be the first time extreme weather was equated with the state of society, and there's a lot of evidence for periodic climatic upheaval throughout history For more, check out SOTT radio's: Earth changes in an electric universe: Is climate change really man-made?

Crews used boats to help residents evacuate their homes in northern Indiana after rainstorms sweeping across the Midwest on Wednesday combined with melting snow to flood rivers, roads and other low-lying areas in several states.

The storm system starting pushed heavy rain, snow and ice into the region this week, and the weather has already been blamed for hundreds of car crashes and several fatalities, including the deaths of four people in a crash along a slippery interstate in Nebraska.

About 19 people had been evacuated from homes in Elkhart, a town just east of South Bend, by early Wednesday, said Mayor Tim Neese. Local schools were closed because of the flooding and an emergency shelter was set up to help evacuees overnight, The Elkhart Truth newspaper reported.

"This city has not seen flooding like this in the last 45 years," Neese said. "We also had record snowfall in addition to consistent rain."

Homes and streets also were flooded in the South Bend area, and forecasters predicted that the swollen St. Joseph River wouldn't crest until Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for parts of several states in the central and southern U.S., spanning from Texas to Illinois and Ohio to Arkansas, where strong winds topped power lines and damages buildings. Winter weather advisories also were issued, including in for Oklahoma and Kansas.

A river of shingle rock flowing down Terrible Gully has left eight farms cut off from town in Rakaia, near Canterbury's Mt Hutt.

Incredible video of the "rocky river" was captured by Donna Field of Cleardale Station as she surveyed the damage from former Cyclone Gita on Wednesday.

The flow of careering shingles closed Double Hill Run Rd which services the farms in the South Island region. It's an event that has become a regular occurrence for the farmers in the area.

"But it's never been this bad before," Field said.

"For a long time it was quite stable, but the last 2.5 - 3 years it has become a lot more active."
