Heavy rain, flash flooding threatens Southeast, US over weekend

Heavy rain and severe weather pounded parts of the Southern Plains and Deep South on Thursday, with eight reported tornadoes in three states: Louisiana, Arkansas and Alabama.

Also, very heavy rain fell in a short period of time from Tulsa to Oklahoma City and to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, prompting multiple water rescues. Tulsa received more than 4 inches of rain in three hours, while Baton Rouge saw 4 to 5 inches in a matter of hours as well.

There are three states under flood alerts on Friday: Kentucky, Alabama and Florida.

Flooding prompts emergency rescues and evacuations in Romania

The Ministry of Interior in Romania reports that 8 people were rescued from floods and over 260 people have been evacuated in 6 counties of the country.

Fire services and civil protection have been responding to flooding in the country since 31 May, carrying out flood prevention, pumping and flood clearance. Around 200 homes and other buildings have been damaged. The Ministry of Interior said that emergency services have carried out interventions in 23 counties in total, with evacuations and rescues carried out in Arges, Arad, Bihor, Buzău, Botoșani and Timiș over the last few days.

Four people were saved from a car trapped in flood water in Lăpuşnic, Timiş county. In Botoșani County, 3 people were rescued from floods in Stroeşti, and another in Câmpeni.

Floods and landslides hit 3 departments of Guatemala - up to 14 inches of rain in 24 hours

Guatemala National Coordination for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) reported that severe weather including heavy rain and strong winds affected the departments of Alta Verapaz, Petén and San Marcos from 03 June, 2019.

The heavy rain caused a landslide in Cobán, Alta Verapaz and flooding in Sayaxché, Petén after a river overflowed. Flood waters also caused a collapse of a highway between San Pablo and San Marcos cities.

In total 2,275 people were affected and 46 injured. Around 50 homes were damaged and 275 people evacuated.

Devastating floods have caused widespread damage in northern and central Sarawak over the past two days.

In Long Busang settlement in the Belaga district some 500km south of Miri, many houses were toppled and properties damaged.

Long Busang is located in the vast Hulu Rejang parliamentary constituency.

Its PKR branch chairman, Mr Abun Sui, told The Star that the 1,000 plus people in Long Busang saw floods that reached about 5m at one stage.

"There are serious damages to homes and properties due to the severity of the floods... They need help from the outside world to recover from this disaster," he said.

Bulgaria's weather forecasters have issued a warning of a risk of floods in the evening hours of June 3 and the early morning of June 4.

The warning follows recent days of heavy rain that have hard-hit several places in Bulgaria, notably second city Plovdiv.

For June 4, the "Code Yellow" warning of potentially dangerous weather has been issued for 15 districts in Bulgaria because of forecast thunderstorms and heavy rain. The districts include Sofia - both the city and the district - and Plovdiv, and are all in the western half of Bulgaria.

On June 3, a partial state of emergency was declared in Gorna Oryahovitsa municipality because of complications caused by the heavy rain.

5 dead, dozens missing after landslides following heavy rain in eastern Region of Uganda

At least 5 people have died after a series of landslides in the Eastern Region of Uganda.

Uganda Broadcasting Coropration (UBC) said that multiple landslides were reported within Bududa district, 3 serious landslides hit Buwaali Sub-County in the areas of Bunamwamba North, Bunamwamba Main and Bunamwamba South. Around 50 people are believed to be missing and 150 houses destroyed.

The landslides occurred during the night of 04 June to early 05 June, 2019, after a period of about 4 hours of heavy rain. Local media reported that the rain also caused some flooding, with the River Summe breaking its banks in Bunamwamba Main.

UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in Libya reports at least 2 people have died and many are displaced after major flooding in Ghat District in south-western Libya.

Flooding struck on 03 June, 2019, after a period of heavy rain. Local authorities said that as much as 70% of the city was under flood water, forcing over 500 families to leave damaged or flooded homes.
