Two people trampled to death by elephants in Tanzania

Elephant
Two Tanzanians have been trampled to death by elephants in the north of the country, police said on Monday.

A 24-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman were killed on Sunday in the district of Korogwe by "elephants who had left the national Mkomazi park", said regional police spokesperson Edward Bukombe.

The little-known Mkomazi park runs on from Kenya's Tsavo National Park on the other side of the border, and is situated a short distance from Mount Kilimanjaro.

Clashes between humans and wild animals are a growing problem in parts of east Africa, as burgeoning populations seek to carve out a space for themselves.

Communities increasingly attack animals seen as a threat, while residents are injured or occasionally killed in these encounters, or have their crops destroyed.

Vadim Klabukov, 23, paid with his life after flouting safety rules when he went to retrieve lost backpack in South Kamchatka nature reserve.

The graduate of Irkutsk Agrarian University was ripped and gnawed to death by the pair of brown bears on Kamchatka peninsula in the far east of Russia.

Without informing his fellow rangers he left the Ozerny base and went back alone to retrieve it - but was ambushed by two bears that had earlier killed another bear and dug the prey into the ground along with some salmon.

Klabukov unwittingly went close to the 'cannibal bears'' food stash and was immediately attacked without time to use his gun or after going close to to a spot where the predator had dug its salmon prey. He died on the spot.

Authorities are on their way to deal with a beached whale that was discovered by beach-goers in Amamzimtoti.

Amanzimtoti beach-goers were in for a shock when they discovered a beached whale on Pipeline Beach on Tuesday morning.

The sight of gill plate remnants indicated that the four-ton sub-adult humpback whale was already dead, a beach official told South Coast Sun.

Parks department law enforcement is currently on the beach dealing with the whale, while they wait for the arrival of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and NSRI, who are said to be tasked with bringing a Tractor Loader Backhoe (TL) truck to dispose of or bury the carcass.

Scientists say it could take at least a week to get answers about what's causing dead seals to wash up on Southern Maine beaches.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, 179 were reported since July 1, 114 of those in August alone. That's three times the average for the entire month of August.

"These numbers are obviously very concerning," said Public Affairs Officer Jennifer Goebel.

Goebel said 73 other seals have been stranded on shore alive.

"We're seeing these seals come in with poor body condition and they're having signs of lethargy and coughing and sneezing, so we're thinking of the possibilty is that it could be either avian influenza or the phocine distemper virus," Goebel said.

A dead whale has washed up on the rocks near in Greenspond, close to the small island's causeway.

Josephine Kelly-Janes, who has a summer home on the island in Bonavista Bay, said she heard about the whale on Saturday morning and drove down to have a look.

"We put the windows down and the smell was so rancid, we had to put them back up," she said.

The body of the marine animal seems to be stuck on the rocks, she said. "The only way he will move from there is if the wind changes, and it's a mighty that would have to take [it]."

On July 21 Latoya Cole and her family members were to celebrate a special occasion, but tragedy struck in the wee hours of the morning, casting a dark shadow on a day that would have otherwise been filled with congratulatory smiles and well wishes.

As Cole's older sister Marsha prepared to walk down the aisle, news came that their 66-year-old father, Whittington, had been rushed to Spanish Town Hospital in St Catherine. He had been ripped apart by at least four pit bulls and Rottweilers and was bleeding profusely. Hours later, he died.

Cole, who spoke with the Jamaica Observer yesterday, said Whittington often walked when he was unable to sleep. He was doing this when the dogs attacked him.

"At 12:45 am he was walking in the community of Hampton Green. I can only assume that he was walking back home or walking out of the scheme when dogs attacked him. The doctors told me he said four dogs attacked him," Cole said.

The attack, she said, occurred at the intersection of Grant's Crescent and Locksley Avenue.
