Authorities are searching for a 46-year-old missing surfer who is believed to have died after a shark attack on the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.

"A man is believed to have died following a shark attack," police said in a statement, adding that he was the only person to be attacked.

The man from Elliston was surfing at the Walkers Rocks Beach on the Great Australian Bight when he was attacked 30 to 50 metres offshore.

Police and paramedics were called to the beach about 7km north of Elliston after 10am (local time) on Saturday.

Over half a dozen boats and jet skis were pressed to search for the "well-known" local where he was last seen, Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

Hundreds of muttonbirds fall from the sky in storm in New Zealand

mmmmmm
Freezing gale force winds are believed to be behind the downing of hundreds of tītī (muttonbirds) in Central Otago, northern Southland and the Lakes District last night.

It is believed the birds were migrating south to the Tītī/Muttonbird Islands for breeding season, but were blown off course and exhausted by the wintry blast.

Garston business owner Robert Durling said he was alerted to the plight of the birds when he heard a thump on his roof, about 9pm last night.

"We just thought it was a possum or a big clump of snow.

"Then we heard another one, so I went out to have a look, but I couldn't see anything.

"Then all of a sudden, I saw this odd-looking bird on the lawn, and then I saw two or three of them, and then another one crashed into the tree beside us, and they kept hitting the roof for ages."

Bizarre, rarely seen cannibalistic fish with giant eyes and dagger-like fangs have been washing up along the Oregon coast, leaving experts stumped.

In a Facebook post on May 1, Oregon State Parks wrote that several lancetfish had been found on beaches from Nehalem south to Bandon in recent weeks.

"No one is sure why they are washing ashore," the post read.

Longnose lancetfish (Alepisaurus ferox) normally live in tropical and subtropical waters. While they can be found in shallow waters, their preferred habitat is the twilight zone — around 650 to 3,300 feet (200 to 1,000 meters) beneath the ocean surface.

One of the lancetfish recently found in Oregon was still alive when it washed up and was helped back into the ocean and it was able to swim off, Oregon State Parks wrote.

For Western ranchers, harsh weather has meant brutal losses during prime calving season

NNNNNN
In remote southeast Oregon, about the only place to stop for a hundred miles is the Oasis Cafe in Juntura.

Travelers come in for coffee and to warm up near the wood stove. Locals gather here too.

Rancher Glenn Harris sits down with a couple of his neighbors for a hot burger. He's talking about what everyone's talking about right now: How this bitter spring has been devastating for newborn calves.

"We had about two feet of snow at least on top of five or six inches of ice," Harris said. "Those calves are born and they just melt right down to that ice."
