Record-breaking heavy snow up to 5 feet deep blanketing Japan

Heavy snow is continuing to hit areas of northern Japan.

As of 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, snow accumulation reached 126 centimeters in Nishiwaga Town, the inland, mountainous area of Iwate Prefecture. That's more than four times the usual snowfall at this time of year.

Police of neighboring Akita Prefecture said 30 vehicles were backed up on a highway near the prefectural border after 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, due to a trailer stuck in the snow.

A 15-kilometer-long section of the highway was closed for about four hours to clear the vehicles. The road reopened at 5:30 a.m.

More snow forecast for Sea of Japan coast

The season's most powerful cold air mass over Japan is bringing heavy snow to areas on the Sea of Japan coast from Hokkaido in the north and to the Chugoku region in the southwest. Weather officials are calling for caution against avalanches, icy roads, and traffic disruptions.

Snowfall in the 24 hours to Wednesday morning was 128 centimeters in Minakami Town in Gunma Prefecture, and 113 centimeters in Yuzawa Town in Niigata Prefecture -- both the heaviest 24-hour snowfalls on record.

Officials forecast that snowfall in the 24 hours until Thursday morning will be up to 100 centimeters in Niigata Prefecture, and 80 centimeters in the northern Kanto region.

They also expect 70 centimeters of snow on the Sea of Japan coast of Tohoku, as well as in the Hokuriku region, Nagano Prefecture and the northern Kansai region.

Officials are warning of traffic disruptions as well as avalanches and snow accumulation leading to downed power lines and trees.

210 roads in Himachal Pradesh, India closed for traffic due to snowfall

As many as 210 roads have been closed for vehicular movement after many areas in Himachal Pradesh witnessed snowfall, officials said on Sunday.

As many as 140 roads are closed in Lahaul-Spiti, 28 in Kullu, 24 in Shimla, eight in Kinnaur, four in Chamba and two in Mandi.

Atal Tunnel in Rohtang also remains closed for vehicular traffic as light snowfall continued in higher reaches of the state overnight. Keylong received 10cm snowfall, Kalpa in Kinnaur district received 4.5cm, and Manali 2cm.

Kullu superintendent of police (SP) Gaurav Singh said Leh-Manali national highway is closed beyond Palchan and Solang and NH-305 (Aut-Ani-Sainj) is also closed for traffic due to fresh snowfall in Jalori pass. He advised people to avoid travelling to these areas until the roads get cleared.

The entire nation of South Korea came under the grip of a cold wave Tuesday, with temperatures dipping below -20C (-4F) in mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, 62 miles (100 km) east of Seoul.

As originally reported by koreatimes.co.kr, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) issued either a cold wave alert or advisory for the majority of South Korea as the mercury plunged to the season's record lows of -23.5C (-10.3F) in Hongcheon, located just east of Seoul, and -22.7C (-8.9F) in PyeongChang, a mountain resort town in Gangwon Province.

Sub-zero readings swept the entire East Asian nation, as a mass of Arctic air rode anomalously-far south on the back of weak and wavy meridional jet stream flow: morning lows in the capital city Seoul reached -11C (12.2F), while in Cheonan -11.5C (11.3F) was registered, according to KMA stats. Even far southern regions experienced the chill, with -5.6C (21.9F) suffered in Busan, -5C (23F) in Gwangju, and a teeth-chattering -6.8C (19.8F) logged in Daegu.

It's known for being one of the snowiest spots in Colorado and this year is no exception. In 48 hours the Wolf Creek Ski Area picked up 26 inches of new snow thanks to back-to-back storm systems over the weekend.

The storm brought the total for the season at Wolf Creek to 122 inches, making it the first resort in Colorado and one of the first in the United States to surpass the 100-inch mark. Jackson Hole checked in Sunday morning with a total of 123 inches so far this season.

The Saturday snowstorm put down a solid blanket of snow across the northern half of Lower Michigan and a sliver of the eastern U.P. Here are the snowfall totals.

You had to be around and north of Big Rapids, Mount Pleasant and Gladwin to get several inches of snow. The large area of northern Lower shaded yellow or orange had over six inches of snow. The small darker orange spot near Alpena had over one foot of snow.

The southern half of Lower Michigan and most of the U.P. didn't get in on the snowstorm, as expected.

For the second successive day, on Sunday, dozens of far-flung and remote villages, including border towns of Keran, Karnah, and Tanghdar, remained cut off due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions in north Kashmir, reported a news agency, United News of India (UNI).

Meanwhile, due to the accumulation of about two to three feet of snow since 8 December, traffic to border towns of Gurez in Bandipora and Machil in Kupwara remained suspended.

"Traffic remained suspended to dozens of far-flung and remote villages, including Kernah, Keran, and Tanghdar, due to slippery road conditions and accumulation of snow," an unnamed official of Police Control Room (PCR), Kupwara, told UNI over phone on Sunday.

Some Southlanders could be forgiven for thinking they are in for a white Christmas as they woke to snow falling on Friday morning.

Light snow is falling in parts of Northern Southland, as temperatures plummeted overnight.

Snow is falling on State Highway 6 between Lumsden and Kingston, on Gorge Hill between Te Anau and Mossburn and in hill country in the province.

There is a dusting of snow on the Remarkables mountain range in Queenstown, and snow had started to fall in Arrowtown.

Temperatures dropped in upper areas of Diamer district in Gilgit-Baltistan region to intense cold after sporadic snowfall for last two days, ARY News reported on Wednesday.

Mercury dropped to minus-21 Celsius at Nanga Parbat base camp, according to a weather report.

Babusar Top, Nanga Parbat base camp and Fairy Meadows have received heavy rainfall, according to weather report. Battugah Top and adjoining areas have also received snowfall on mountains.

Babusar Top and Battugah Top have received over four feet snowfall in the snow spell.
