A 5.3 magnitude earthquake hit central South Africa on Tuesday, killing at least one man and trapping some miners underground, according to emergency services.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the tremor was centred in Orkney, a town around 120 km (70 miles) southwest of Johannesburg, an area with a high concentration of deep gold mines.

"One of the buildings collapsed on a man believed to be in his 30s ... by the time paramedics arrived there was nothing they could do for him," Werner Vermaak, spokesman for emergency service provider ER24, told local television.

"I have since been alerted to mines in the local area where they have received reports of various miners trapped," Vermaak added, without giving any figures.

Officials at AngloGold Ashanti, Harmony Gold, Gold Fields and Sibanye Gold said they had felt the tremors in their headquarters but had so far received no reports of anything untoward in their mines.

The area around Johannesburg is not prone to seismic activity but it is home to some of the deepest gold mines in the world. The quake is the largest in the southern Africa region since a 7.0 tremor in Zimbabwe in 2006.

Update: At least 367 killed in southern China after strong earthquake

A strong earthquake in southern China's Yunnan province toppled thousands of homes on Sunday, killing at least 367 people and injuring more than 1,800.

About 12,000 homes collapsed in Ludian, a densely populated county located around 277 miles northeast of Yunnan's capital, Kunming, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported.

The magnitude-6.1 quake struck at 4:30 p.m. at a depth of 6 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Its epicenter was in Longtoushan township, 14 miles southwest of the city of Zhaotong, the Ludian county seat.

Ma Liya, a resident of Zhaotong, told Xinhua that the streets there were like a "battlefield after bombardment." She added that her neighbor's house, a new two-story building, had toppled, and said the quake was far worse than one that struck the area in 2012 and killed 81 people.

Rescuers carry an injuried child on a stretcher after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit the area in Ludian county in Zhaotong, southwest China's Yunnan province on August 3, 2014.
At least 150 people were killed and scores more injured after an earthquake measuring from 6.1 to 6.5, according to different estimates, hit Chinese Yunnan province, Xinhua reports.

The US Geological Survey has estimated the quake at 6.1 on the Richter scale, while previously reporting the strikes measuring 6.3. At the same time, the China Earthquake Networks Center said the magnitude of the quake was 6.5.

The quake struck 11 kilometers west-northwest of the town of Wenping at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers, according to USGS. Chinese state television said the epicenter of the quake was in Yunnan province's Ludian county.

"I felt a strong jolt on my fifth-floor home and some small objects in my home fell off the shelves," a resident in the county seat of Ludian told Xinhua.

The quake toppled and cracked apart buildings, forcing people to rush into the streets, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported. The administration of the affected Yunnan province sent a 30-member team to the quake's epicenter.

Increasing earthquakes in UK prompt rise in fracking fears

Image
An increasing number of earthquakes have been recorded in the UK, official figures show.
The highest level of detections in the last decade is set to be registered for 2014, with 100 earthquakes already recorded in the first three months of the year and 149 in total up until July.
This compares to 154 throughout 2013, 64 in 2006 and 111 reported in 2005, 2007 and 2011.

One small tremor, which centred on Jersey and Guernsey in the Channel Islands earlier this month. The quake had a magnitude measuring 4.2, making it the largest in the region for almost 90 years and the tremors were felt all along the south coast of England. The tremor was reported to have registered on British Geological Survey monitoring station equipment in Exeter, Devon.

Environmental activists fear the Government's desire to exploit shale gas reserves in rocks beneath the UK will cause small earthquakes. But ministers believe the technique used to tap into the potential supplies - known as fracking - will bring down energy bills and create thousands of jobs.

The UK earthquake data covering June 2004 to July 2014 was released to Parliament in response to a written question from Labour's Tom Greatrex.
