Extreme climate fraud has arrived at The Washington Post

The Washington Post had an article today claiming the Northeast doesn't get cold winters any more. This after they spent most of the winter blaming the record cold on global warming.

Four pilot whales stranded in Iceland, three saved - 3rd such event locally within a month

Four pilot whales stranded near Ólafsvík, West Iceland yesterday evening, mbl.is reports. Three of the whales managed to return to sea of their own accord, while one died in the shallows. The whales were part of a large pod numbering some hundred animals, which was swimming 100-200m (330-650ft) from the shore.

Pilot whale pods have been seen close to shore very often this summer in West and Southwest Iceland. Around 50 pilot whales stranded near Garður, Southwest Iceland just earlier this month. Rescue workers managed to save 30 of them.

Kristinn Jónasson, mayor of Snæfellsbær, says a pilot whale pod has been spotted in the ocean near Ólafsvík this summer. "Three weeks ago there was one out at Rif, around 150 of them, then people came on jet skis and drove them out."

Experts from the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute measured the dead beached whale and took samples from the corpse around noon today.

Comment: Details of the other two events: Dozens of dead beached pilot whales found in West Iceland - 2nd recent mass stranding globally

50 pilot whales strand, 20 die in Iceland - 2 weeks after similar event locally

Elsewhere in recent days dead whales have appeared along the coasts of France and New Jersey.

Huge sinkhole threatens to swallow pub in Amiens, France

sinkhole
A large sinkhole has emerged right outside a pub in northern France.

Part of the venue in Amiens was left dangling over the edge of the 16ft deep hole after it suddenly emerged overnight yesterday. Gas and electricity in the area were cut off and local media says nobody is believed to have been hurt when it appeared.

For now, La Bonne Humeur (good mood in English) brasserie remains closed until they can make the building safe. It is not known what caused the collapse, but there are theories that it could be related to the town's Roman heritage or a fortress built in the Middle Ages.

Moscow on track for coldest August on record, dating back 150+ years

Cloudy Moscow
Eastern Europe has been experiencing a miserable summer so far, with temperatures holding well-below average for the majority of the season. And now, following a cold and wet June and July (in which many new daily low temperature records were set), Moscow is currently on course for it's coldest August in recorded history.

The first week of August in Moscow was pretty chilly, with an average air temperature of just 13C (55.4F) some 5C below the norm.

The city's coldest August on record was way back in 1884, when the average daily air temperature for the month was some 4C below the norm. In fact, that August turned out to be colder than the May.

According to www.hmn.ru, the beginning of August in Moscow has been characterized by unusual weather in terms of not only the cold, but also of abundant rainfall and a lack of sunshine.

After the first 7 days, precipitation is already at average levels for the entire month, while the chronic lack of sunshine is within touching distance of Aug 2001's record-low 181 hours (avg. sun hours for the month of August are 238 hours).

Spectacular moon halo seen over Magellan telescope in Las Campanas, Chile

This sort of halo is called a 22 degree halo by skywatchers. You can see them around both the sun and moon. They're caused by ice crystals in the air. They bear that name because the radius of the ring is always approximately 22 degrees.

Yuri Beletsky works for the Carnegie Observatories, based at Las Campanas in northern Chile, home to the twin Magellan telescopes, and site of the future Giant Magellan Telescope. Yuri is a fantastic nature photographer; you can follow his Nightscapes on Facebook. He posted this image on Facebook on August 10, 2019, and wrote:
Even when the weather is bad, we astronomers, never lose hope. Cloudy weather, it's the worst nightmare for us. But at the same time the nature can surprise us with stunning views during those nights. Here is an amazing 22 degree halo around the moon just above the Magellan telescope :) The brightest 'star' on the left is the planet Jupiter. Besides, you can see some stars through the clouds. I hope you'll enjoy the view.

The blizzard of Oz? Videos of kangaroos frolicking in the snow go viral

Unseasonably cold weather turned parts of Australia into something more akin to the frozen wastelands of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back than the arid deserts of Mad Max, as viral videos of kangaroos playing in the snow proved.

Even the typically dry and arid parts of New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland can switch from Tatooine to Hoth in a matter of weeks, especially when there's a polar front spreading snow everywhere. Amid the snowy din, several Aussies spotted some frolicking tauntauns... er, kangaroos over the weekend.

In one video, titled 'Not something you see every day in Australia', dozens of roos are seen prancing like mad around a snow-filled paddock.
