A boy was killed and his grandfather a plantation worker seriously injured in a tiger attack at Belluru village in Ponnampet taluk of Kodagu district on Monday. The victim was identified as Rangaswamy, 8, while his grandfather, Kencha, a plantation worker, has been hospitalised.

Conservator of Forests T. Hiralal said the Forest Department team has identified the marauding tiger, which is about 10 years old. The official said the team has tracked the animal to a sacred grove or devara kaadu. The combing operations are on and the tiger has been cornered, he added.

Earlier in the day, the team had tried to tranquilise the animal which was lurking in the bushes but sources said the tranquiliser dart missed its mark. The marksmen accompanying a foot patrol team had come close to the tiger and hence were forced to open fire but the tiger escaped. A senior official said the combing and tracking operation would was suspended late in the evening and will resume at dawn.

Monday's incident is the third human death due to a tiger attack in Kodagu in the last three weeks and has resulted in widespread anger against the authorities for their failure to curb human-animal conflict.

Could Iceland be entering a volcanic period?

Volcanic systems on the Reykjanes peninsula
© Map/VísindavefurinnVolcanic systems on the Reykjanes peninsula are shown in pink. The red lines indicate the tectonic plate boundary, where earthquakes are common. Geothermal areas are marked in yellow. Black lines indicate fissure swarms.
"If an eruption occurs, it would likely mark the beginning of such a [volcanic] period - lasting a few centuries, I believe," states Magnús Á. Sigurgeirsson, geologist at ÍSOR Iceland GeoSurvey - a consulting and research institute in the field of geothermal sciences and utilization.

"That's at least how it has been the past three times, and even dating further back, but we don't have as exact data available on that," he tells mbl.is . He is referring to the uncertainty regarding whether an eruption can be expected soon on the Reykjanes peninsula, Southwest Iceland.

Magnús assembled data on the past three volcanic periods in the area. These were 3,000-3,500 years ago, 1,900-2,400 years ago, and finally between the years 800 and 1240 AD. His information is based on geological maps of the Reykjanes peninsula and on a comprehensive book on volcanic eruptions in Iceland called Náttúruvá á Íslandi, eldgos og jarðskjálftar.

Hail, yes: Chunks of ice rain down during storm in Florida

Florida hail
© Patrick T. Fallon/AFP via Getty ImagesSome Floridians were treated to a rare sight on Saturday: hail on the ground looked like snow.
It's been that kind of year. An iceberg the size of Los Angeles broke off the main coast of Antarctica last week. On Saturday, Florida residents were shoveling ice after a hailstorm raged through Daytona Beach.

"I moved south to get away from this. Who shovels in flip-flops?" a man asks as he clears the pathway in front of his home in a video posted to Twitter on Saturday.

"I thought he moved to Florida to escape the snow," the man's daughter, Meribeth Evans, says off-camera.

There have been 93 dead dolphins, whales and porpoises washed up along the coast in the first two months of the year - the highest number ever recorded in that time period.

Four were successfully refloated after efforts from volunteers but 89 died.

Last year, the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group received 70 reports of the animals washing up dead in the winter months, which was unprecedented, but it was surpassed this year with 93 strandings.
