A mature female Hector's dolphin has been found dead at the head of Milford Sound in Fiordland.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) said there were no obvious signs of the cause of death and the animal had been sent away to be examined.

DOC said while other dolphin species were seen in the sound, sightings of Hector's, either dead or alive, were rare.

It said while they inhabited the West Coast, they didn't usually travel this far south.

Hector's were nationally endangered with a population of around 10,000.

In advance of the Christmas-New Year's holiday, Kirkwood and Mount Rose became the first major ski areas in the Tahoe region this week to open 100% of their terrain. At the same time, top-to-bottom skiing, along with vast new scopes of runs and acreage, is being unveiled at many ski areas for the weekend across the High Sierra.

It comes in time for Christmas, answering the wishes of thousands of skiers, boarders and vacationers who plan to head to snow country for the holidays.

"It'll be a snow-filled holiday here in Tahoe," said Russell Carlton of Vail Resorts, which operates Kirkwood, Heavenly and Northstar ski resorts. "Each of our ski areas have received more than 10 feet of snow this season, including nearly 8 feet of snow in December alone at Kirkwood and Northstar."

At Kirkwood, located near Carson Pass on Highway 88 about an hour south of South Lake Tahoe, 12 of 12 lifts are up and running for access to 2,400 acres of terrain.

Mount Rose, located on the Nevada side of Tahoe outside of Reno, has counted 134 inches, or more than 11 feet, of snowfall for the season, and is also expected to have 100% of its operation open for the weekend.

The capital Tuesday recorded its lowest maximum temperature in December in the past 22 years, with 12.2 degrees being the highest reading of mercury, India Meteorological Department officials said.

This is the lowest the temperature has dipped to since 28 December 1997, officials said, when it was 11.3 degrees Celsius.

Kuldeep Srivastava, scientist at IMD, said the temperature was also the second lowest since 1992.

He added, "It was caused due to strong and cold north westerly winds from western Himalayan region and a layer of low clouds stopping the sunlight from reaching the surface of the earth."

The difference between the maximum and minimum temperature Tuesday was also very low with the minimum temperature recorded at 10.4 degrees Celsius.

Experts have said the condition is likely to persist on Wednesday as well, after which the temperature would increase.

On Monday, the maximum temperature in the city was 12.9 degrees Celsius, lowest since December 2003.

As per an IMD official, 28 December 1973 has so far been the day which holds the record for having the lowest maximum temperature, at 11.2 degrees Celsius.

Comment: This month Delhi also recorded the highest 24-hour December rainfall in 22 years.

Data from a network of newly installed weather stations atop Mount Everest shows that the mountain experiences some of the most intense sunlight on the planet.

As alpine mountaineers are all too aware, the sun can be brutally fierce atop snow-capped peaks.

Preliminary data from the weather stations on Mount Everest suggests this effect is amplified to an astounding degree at the top of the world, creating what could be some of the most intense illumination anywhere on Earth's surface.

This epic lighting does more than give hikers nasty sunburns. In a warming world, it might be hastening ice melt atop the world's highest mountains and impacting glaciers in ways scientists do not fully understand.

Comment: SpaceWeather.com has also been monitoring conditions on our planet and recently reported that atmospheric radiation is at its highest ever, and cosmic rays are also at a 5 year high; this is likely related to the Sun, which is thought to be entering a "grand" solar minimum, and recently broke records for the number of spotless days. It's worth noting that increased cosmic rays causes increased cloud cover, that, in turn, reflects the Sun's light leading to overall cooling.
