Russia killed JFK: Mainstream media goes tinfoil in timely conspiracy theory

JFK assassination conspiracy graphic
"He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past." - George Orwell
Shortly after noon on November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as he rode in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas, Texas. It's been over 53 years since the assassination. Since that fateful November day, conspiracy theories have abounded. Now, however, there is a new one and it is being pushed by the mainstream media - Russia killed JFK.

As if the entirely baseless Russiagate conspiracy theory wasn't ridiculous enough, mainstream media is now running with the narrative that Russia could've been behind the assassination of JFK.

The off the cuff conspiracy theory piece by Newsweek this week centers the story on KGB defector Yuri Nosenko and it asks, "Did Russia Kill a US President"? It was also picked up by USA Today and AOL and attempts to infer that despite Kennedy's de-escalation of the Cuban missile crisis and the fact that he made peace with Soviet Russia at the time, the Russians did it.

Comment: London police have noted a surge in knife crimes as a 'culture of knife carrying' has taken hold among young people:
Last week, Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures showed that London has seen a 24 percent rise in bladed attacks. There were a total of 12,021 in 1016 - 2,327 more than the previous year.

Over a two-week period in June, 11 people died as a result of knife attacks. The two youngest victims were just 17 years old.

This is despite efforts by the London Metropolitan Police to clamp down on knife crime.

During a visit to a community centre in Putney in May, Met Commissioner Cressida Dick was told by one resident that even small children are carrying bladed weapons.

"On the housing estate, it's six-year-olds that are carrying knives, because they think they won't be stopped. You need to start there, in the primary schools - you need to tell much younger people," the anonymous resident said.

A girl aged just five has reportedly been forced into marriage with a 22-year-old man in Pakistan.

Police were called to the ceremony in the village of Raman Shar near Dakhan Town but arrived too late to halt the marriage, according to Pakistani newspaper Dawn.

The groom was reportedly arrested along with his father and the registrar. The little girl is believed to have also been taken into custody along with her mother.

The newspaper reported that the child and her mother are also set to be prosecuted under the Child Marriages Restraint Act, which sets the minimum marriageable age of a female at 16.

Child, early and forced marriage is widespread in the Islamic country, although there is a lack of reliable data on the issue.

Some 81 percent of Germans think their country has a growing problem with political extremism, a recent survey by YouGov and Statista found. Only 12 percent of respondents said political extremism isn't much of a problem.

The lion's share of respondents - 78 percent - believe that German authorities have lost control of the problem.

Three in every five Germans (61 percent) have thrown their weight behind the idea of enhancing the struggle against all kinds of extremism, from the far left and the far right, the survey showed.

At least 46 percent of respondents believe that radical political parties should be banned.

Congressman calls for hearings on Amazon's proposed merger with Whole Foods amid antitrust concerns

Amazon.com Inc.'s expansion plans, including its agreement to buy Whole Foods Market Inc. for $13.7 billion, are raising hackles in Washington -- and Wall Street is taking notice.

A U.S. lawmaker has called for hearings on the proposed deal to consider its ramifications for shoppers and workers. Hedge-fund manager Doug Kass has taken a short position on the fast-growing online retailer, saying government antitrust concerns will erode its value. In June, Goldman Sachs issued a note questioning whether tech stocks are overpriced and whether investors have overlooked the risks associated with potential government regulatory issues.

Still, Amazon's shares have gained 34 percent this year, rising to $1,003.21 at 2:01 p.m. Friday in New York. Experts and analysts have largely dismissed antitrust threats for the world's largest online retailer because the company doesn't have large market concentration in any one product category and it has a track record of helping keep prices low for shoppers. A key legal question is whether Seattle-based Amazon has grown to the point of discouraging innovation from competitors.

"There's a concern Amazon might be getting too big," said Michael Carrier, antitrust expert at Rutgers University School of Law in New Jersey. "The odds are the Whole Foods acquisition will go through, but these political winds will create a bit of a fight."

A fitness center in northern Germany briefly barred all ethnic minorities from joining due to fears of terrorism, after one of its members was detained on suspicions of posing a security threat. The decision, however, sparked anger online.

"Due to recent incidents (terrorism + arrests) and the protection of our members, we will IMMEDIATELY no longer accept any fellow citizens with an immigration background. We ask for your understanding," a gym of the Easyfitness chain in the city of Güstrow reportedly announced in a handwritten memo, Focus Online reports.

The announcement followed the arrest of three suspected Islamists, one of whom frequented the gym. Two Bosnians and one German suspected of plotting "an act of violence that threatens the security of the state" were detained during an anti-terrorist operation on Wednesday. The suspects were later released as the judge couldn't issue an arrest warrant.

A recent conference hosted by an Ivy League university focused on integration and inclusion in K-12 education and included workshops on how educators should face white privilege in their classrooms, challenge microaggressions and address "Eurocentric pedagogical approaches."

The "Reimagining Education Summer Institute" conference, organized by Columbia University's Teachers College, was held in mid-July and concentrated on "opportunities and challenges of creating and sustaining racially, ethnically and socio-economically integrated schools," according to its website.

The event, in its second year, drew 300 participants that mostly consisted of K-12 teachers and principals, the institute's director Amy Wells said in a phone interview with The College Fix. The four-day conference included plenary sessions, dozens of workshops and dialogue sessions.

ICE takes aim at street gang MS-13, pressures local police to 'hang on' to criminal detainees

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has announced a crackdown on MS-13, but its strategy may run counter to the city policy in Los Angeles, an important hub of the infamous gang. ICE is calling on local law enforcement to help out.

A White House statement Thursday said the Department of Justice is requesting 300 more federal prosecutors for specific duties focusing on violent crime and criminal immigration enforcement to directly pursue MS-13 and associates of the gang, which has power centers in Los Angeles and northern Virginia.

ICE acting director Thomas Homan, in a rare appearance at a White House briefing on Thursday, called for a countrywide crackdown on MS-13.

"Targeting, arresting and removing members of violent street gangs such as MS-13 sends a clear message to criminal enterprises around the world," he said, adding, "We need the community's help, and most importantly, we need local law enforcement's help, especially county jails that will have an MS-13 booked in that county jail. But if that county jail is located in a sanctuary city, they get released back to the streets."
