Apartment building partially collapses near Miami Beach, rescues underway - UPDATES

At least one person was killed and at least 10 others injured when a 12-story apartment building near Miami partially collapsed and "pancaked" early Thursday, prompting a massive search-and-rescue effort — with 51 people still unaccounted for, officials said.

The ocean-facing portion of the 136-unit Champlain Towers South Condo on Collins Avenue in Surfside, just north of Miami Beach, collapsed about 1:30 a.m., leaving a mountain of rubble and trapping residents asleep in their beds inside.

Miami-Dade County Fire Chief Ray Jadallah said during a news conference that 55 units collapsed, and that 35 residents were rescued from the building. Two people were removed from the rubble.

One person died, 10 people were treated at the scene and two were taken to a hospital, he said.

Comment: More information from local outlet KATU:
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said she got a call from President Joe Biden, who offered federal aid. Hotels opened to some of the displaced residents, she said, and deliveries of food, medicine and more were being hastily arranged. Rescue officials tried to determine how many people might be missing and asked residents to check in with them.

About half of the building's roughly 130 units were affected, the mayor told a news conference. Rescuers pulled at least 35 people from the wreckage by mid-morning, and heavy equipment was being brought in to help stabilize the structure to give them more access, Raide Jadallah of Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue said.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said officials were "bracing for some bad news just given the destruction that we're seeing."

The collapse, which appeared to affect one leg of the L-shaped tower, tore away walls and left a number of homes in the still-standing part of the building exposed in what looked like a giant dollhouse. Television footage showed bunk beds, tables and chairs inside. Air conditioners hung from some parts of the building, where wires now dangled.

Piles of rubble and debris surrounded the area, and cars up to two blocks away were coated with with a light layer of dust from the debris.
UPDATE 25/06/2021: The death toll continues to rise, standing now at 4 confirmed dead with 159 missing:
As of Friday morning, 159 people remain missing, up from the previous tally which showed 99 individuals unaccounted for. Three additional bodies have been pulled from the rubble, bringing the official death count to four. Eleven injuries have been reported, with four people receiving hospital treatment.

The 12-story structure experienced catastrophic structural failure on Thursday, affecting around half of the building's roughly 130 apartment units. Emergency workers were able to rescue at least 35 people in the first hours following the collapse.

Rescue operations continued through the night. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said that the search would continue and there was still hope that more people would be found alive. Workers are using "everything possible" - including sonar technology, cameras, and specially trained dogs - to assist with the search, the mayor said.

There have been isolated fires reported among the rubble, and what remains of the building is considered structurally unsound, making rescue efforts a dangerous endeavor.

A reunification center has been set up near the site, where people have waited for news about their loved ones, as well as the results of DNA tests being used to identify victims.
President Biden declared the collapse a national emergency:
The order, which went into effect on Thursday, will allow the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and other federal agencies to provide assistance to state and local authorities currently sifting through the rubble.

The declaration specifically authorizes FEMA to mobilize recruitment and resources in order to "alleviate the impacts of the emergency." Federal agencies will also help with debris removal, the declaration, which went into effect on Thursday, stated.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a decree earlier declaring a state of emergency for Miami-Dade County, in an effort to speed up federal assistance for the rescue operation.

Best of the Web: Winston Marshall: Why I'm leaving Mumford & Sons

I loved those first tours. Bouncing off a sweaty stage in an Edinburgh catacomb we then had to get to a gig in Camden by lunch the next day. We couldn't fit all four of us and Ted's double-bass into the VW Polo. I think it was Ben who drew the short-straw and had to follow by train with his keyboard. I remember blitzing it down the M6 through the night, the lads asleep beside me. We made it but my voice sadly didn't, completely shot by exhaustion, I had to mime my harmonies. Being in Mumford & Sons was exhilarating.

Every gig was its own adventure. Every gig its own story. Be it odysseys through the Scottish Islands, or soapbox shows in Soho. Where would we sleep that night? Hostels in Fort William, pub floors in Ipswich, even the Travelodge in Carlisle maintains a sort of charm in my mind. We saw the country and then, as things miraculously grew, the world. All the while doing what we loved. Music. And not just any music. These songs meant something. They felt important to me. Songs with the message of hope and love. I was surrounded by three supremely talented song-writers and Marcus, our singer with a one-in-a-million voice. A voice that can compel both a field of 80,000 and the intimacy of a front room. Fast-forward ten years and we were playing those same songs every night in arenas, flying first-class, staying in luxury hotels and being paid handsomely to do so. I was a lucky boy.

A former soldier fired gunshots in a coronavirus field hospital in Thailand on Thursday, killing a 54-year-old patient after earlier shooting dead a convenience store employee, police said.

The suspect, 23, believed that the patients in the hospital in Pathum Thani near Bangkok were drug addicts and that he hated drug addicts, regional police chief Amphol Buarabporn told Reuters, after an initial investigation.

The field hospital was once a drug rehabilitation centre and was reorganised to treat COVID-19 patients.

The flags show the location of the graves. Photo provided by the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations on June 24, 2021.
"We will find more bodies," said FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron. "And we will not stop until we find all of our children."

Eighteen years ago, Lorraine Fummerton returned to the site of Marieval Indian Residential School, which she attended as a girl.

She was with her daughter, at a powwow in the community she left decades ago. Mother and daughter decided to visit the grave of Fummerton's late sister at the cemetery near the school. They wandered into a nearby field, which left Fummerton at a loss. She seemed to be searching for something that survived only in memory.

Not enough data to recommend COVID-19 booster vaccines yet: CDC panel

cdc building
A group of independent experts advising the CDC suggested there isn't enough data yet to support recommendations for COVID-19 booster vaccines, and expect to continue monitoring studies into the fall.

The advisory panel is specifically tracking potentially waning immunity over time, variants and any declines in vaccine efficacy, but Dr. Sara Oliver, member of the CDC's Epidemic Intelligence Service, said during the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) meeting Wednesday that COVID-19 infection affords antibody protection for up to eight months, and mRNA vaccines revealed persistent antibody levels for up to six months post-second dose.

"There's not sufficient data to support recommendations for booster doses currently, but we'll continue to closely monitor," Oliver said.

Several experts urged the priority should be improving current vaccination rates in the face of concerning viral variants, which could in turn help protect the vulnerable, especially immunocompromised individuals and those in nursing homes. Another expert warned the U.S. isn't sending enough doses abroad to help suppress the pandemic globally.

Of note, the so-called "correlate of protection" is still unknown, or the immune response that helps scientists predict the degree of protection against infection or disease.

Steven Crowder vs. Ethan Klein: Proof that leftist cowardice makes honest debate impossible

Steven Crowder vs. Ethan Klein

Comment: A little warning about a tiny bit of crude language used in this very good analysis...

I can't think of a situation that more expertly illustrates the complete disconnect between conservative logic and sense of principle vs. leftist duplicity and intellectual arson than the recently scheduled "debate" between Steven Crowder and Ethan Klein. In fact, I found it so compelling as a litmus test for where we are at in our political climate that I think it needs to be examined further.

For those that are not aware, Steven Crowder, a popular comedian and conservative on YouTube was engaged in a digital tit-for-tat with Ethan Klein, a YouTube meme-chaser that recently devolved into a full bore social justice statist. Klein has a big following among the tween-to-twenty crowd on YouTube, built up over the years through his earlier and more inane content. It's hard to say what his original audience thinks of his new SJW mask, but his political observations are...well...let's just say he's got a mind like a rubber bear trap.

This is why his sudden invitation to Steven Crowder for a public debate was so surprising. How could he possibly hope to win? In order to win a debate, you must be right, or you must be clever enough to mislead your opponent with spin and get him trapped in the weeds until he gives up. Ethan Klein is neither of these things.

The subject matter was also universally important - The division between leftists and conservatives on the covid shutdowns, mask mandates and experimental vaccines is actually creating a form of political balkanization in the US right now. Conservatives and moderates are leaving blue states by the millions to escape the draconian lockdowns widely cheered by the political left. Many red states are now like free zones, a testament to what America used to be; while blues state citizens are perpetually wondering when they will be allowed to go back to normal, or when the lockdowns will drop on their heads again like a communist hammer and sickle.

Comment: Americans have been behaving this way on a geopolitical level as well...
There is a Russian joke currently making the rounds in Moscow. Russia's Putin arrives back in the Kremlin after his September New York meeting with President Obama on Syria and other topics. A trusted aide asks how the talk with Obama went. Putin tells his aide that, in a bid to lower the temperature and calm the nerves before turning to grave topics like the wars in Syria and Ukraine, the Russian president proposed they first sit down to a game of chess. Putin tells his aide what it's like playing chess with Obama. "It's like playing with a pigeon. First it knocks over all the pieces, then it shits on the board and finally struts around like it won."

Scottish Dark Sky Observatory destroyed in suspicious fire

Dark Sky Observatory
© Alasdair MacLeod/Daily RecordFire ripped through the observatory in the early hours of Wednesday morning
The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory in Ayrshire has been destroyed in a "suspicious" fire.

Emergency services were called to the site on the edge of the Galloway Forest Park at about 01:00.

A joint police and fire service investigation will be carried out to try to establish the cause.

Comment: Wikipedia provides a bit more information about the observatory:
The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory was an astronomical observatory located near Loch Doon Loch Doon, East Ayrshire, Scotland.

It was situated on a hilltop site overlooking the Craigengillan Estate and Dalmellington. The site is located in the northern edge of the Galloway ForestDark Sky Park, and within the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere, with low levels of light pollution and clear horizon views.

The observatory was built through 2012 and was officially opened by then First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond.[1] The building and facilities were expanded in 2017 with the addition of a digital planetarium, officially opened by the Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran John Duncan.[2] After opening the observatory saw visitor numbers increase exponentially, making it one of the top tourist attractions in Scotland.[3][4][5]

The SDSO was open all throughout the year, with its main aims being to allow people of all ages and abilities to learn and experience the wonders of astronomy and space, and to be a vital educational resource to children in the region.[6]

SOTT Focus: MindMatters: The Emperor Has New Clothes: Wokism Is a Mask of Sanity

woke
As we continue to observe the ever-encroaching signs of 'woke' thinking, ideology, language, behavior, and political policy in western society we find it necessary to take a step back and ask ourselves: what is wokism actually a sign of? What undergirds it, stratifies it and gives its "power"? And more specifically, what are the underlying psychological conditions and deficiencies among so many - that make this virulent and dangerous movement what its come to be as we're seeing it today?

Today on MindMatters we dissect wokism using the lens of ponerology. Wokism isn't just a bad idea. It's a mask for something much worse, just as communism and fascism were in the twentieth century.

Leaked documents: Iowa teachers instruct that MAGA slogan is White Supremacy

pyramid chart
Today Benny Johnson revealed on Twitter leaked documents that expose the indoctrination of our students by targeting particular groups of people. In this case that would be those individuals who supported President Trump's MAGA movement.

Johnson, Chief Creative Officer at both Turning Point, USA, and Arsenal Media Group, often gets to the heart of the liberal matter on his social media platforms, and today is no exception. Just look at the tweets included below confirming the efforts to convince students that MAGA is code for White Supremacy. To be precise, it's actually covert white supremacy and as indicated in the pyramid, is more socially acceptable.

Putting aside that all of this is complete nonsense, it's being funded by taxpayer dollars and forced upon educators via mandatory training. What happened to math and science? Why are we teaching kids about a campaign slogan that belonged to a particular candidate, who then became President. And just to be sure that we have evidence to support the claim that Trump's administration was anything but racist, let's look at some data.

Comment: The question is asked: "How far down the slippery slope of intolerance do we want this to go?" Without resistance, America has been set up to crash and burn from the inside out. With resistance it burns from the outside in. Choices.
