The second-ranking diplomat in the North American Treaty Organization said Thursday there is unanimous support among member states for Ukraine in the face of the worst surge in violence between government forces and Russian separatists in two years.

Comment: "Unanimous support" is just political speak for "US puppet states are doing what their American masters tell them to do." The reality is that the surge in violence is coming from the Ukraine government, backed by CIA mercenaries, against the separatists in Donbass. This is most likely part of a grander strategy by factions of the West to destabilize the region and create tensions between the American and Russian governments which makes improved relations between them much more difficult.

After a private meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottenmoeller said at a joint press conference with her Ukrainian counterpart all 28 NATO members remain committed to supporting Ukraine after weeks of renewed violence at the hands of "Russian aggressive actions" in the eastern portion of the country.

Comment: A "private meeting" where NATO stooges were given their orders from the US Empire.

The United States and its European allies have blamed Russia for stoking violence in Ukraine for years after Viktor Yanukovych, the Russian-backed former president of Ukraine, was removed from power in 2014. Russia has officially denied any hand in encouraging violence by Russian separatists, but was party to a cease-fire deal and pledged to stop the violence instigated by pro-Russian forces.

Comment: Russian president Vladimir Putin was reportedly "furious" in a telephone conversation with Angela Merkel, accusing Ukraine of using the Normandy format sponsored by Merkel to conceal its military aggression in eastern Ukraine. A transcript of the conversation released by the Kremlin stated:
Vladimir Putin drew Angela Merkel's attention to the data of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission as well as statements by official Kiev representatives, which indicate attempts by the Ukrainian security forces to change the situation at the contact line in their favour by military means. It is becoming obvious that Kiev officials are trying to sabotage the execution of the Minsk Agreements and use the Normandy format to conceal their destructive acts.
The situation in Eastern Ukraine, as bleak as it is, is only deteriorating. With Trump cutting Kiev off from future funding Poroshenko has declared that there will be no end to the escalation of hostilities. But, with the publication of this message, Putin has once again made it clear that it is not up to Russia to end hostilities. It has been and always will be a problem created by and for the West, whose leaders show absolutely no compunction for the destruction they've wrought.

The Department of Defense (DoD) has not supplied Syrian rebels with US man-portable air-defense systems, or MANPADS, the department's spokesperson Adrian Rankine-Galloway told Sputnik on Friday.

In December, then-US President Barack Obama waived legal restrictions outlined in the US Arms Export Control Act to allow arms supply for the moderate Syrian opposition.

"DoD only provides weapons to the Syrian Arab Coalition, the Arab element of the Syrian Democratic Forces," Rankine-Galloway said.

"DoD has not provided US MANPADS to any group in Syria."

Sometimes it takes a very silly man to ask a truly amazing question

Below is perhaps the most enjoyable verbal exchange we've seen concerning the ongoing horror in Syria, which admittedly is not a very amusing subject to speak about.

A responsible internet article would provide a "blockquote" highlighting the juiciest morsels of irony and cognitive dissonance, followed by the mic drop retort.

Sorry, we will not provide you with this. You have to watch the whole thing. Start to finish. (Don't be lazy, it's not very long.)

Syrian President Bashar Assad said that some of the militants that fought in Syria later fled to Europe and live there as "innocent" refugees.

Some of the militants that fought in Syria later fled to Europe and live there as "innocent" refugees, Syrian President Bashar Assad said in his interview with the Yahoo News.

"You can find it on the Net ... Those terrorists in Syria, holding the machine gun or killing people, they are peaceful refugees in Europe or in the West," Assad said.

Comment: Assad also had a very sensible view when asked about Trump's travel ban and its relation to terrorists:

Assad certain some refugees are 'definitely' terrorists

Assad
Weighing in on one of the most contentious issues in American politics — the danger posed to host countries by the 4.8 million people who have fled from Syria's civil war — Syrian President Bashar Assad told Yahoo News that some of the refugees are "definitely" terrorists.

In an exclusive interview with Yahoo News at a presidential office in Damascus, Assad said President Trump's freeze on admitting refugees from his country — part of an executive order that has drawn widespread protests and is being challenged in federal court — "is an American issue" on which he would not take sides. But asked if some of those who fled are "aligned with terrorists," Assad quickly replied, "Definitely."

"You can find it on the Net," Assad went on: "Those terrorists in Syria, holding the machine gun or killing people, they [appear as] peaceful refugees in Europe or in the West." He said he couldn't estimate how many there might be, but he added that "you don't need a significant number to commit atrocities." He noted that the 9/11 attacks were pulled off by fewer than 20 terrorists "out of maybe millions of immigrants in the United States. So it's not about the number, it's about the quality, it's about the intentions."

As for the future of Syria's 4.8 million refugees, Assad said, "For me, the priority is to bring those citizens to their country, not to help them immigrate."

As with all interviews granted by President Bashar al-Assad, this interview was filmed by his presidential press office. No editorial changes were made to the content.

Where's the outrage? Japan accepted merely 28 refugees in 2016 despite soaring asylum applications

Despite a worldwide refugee crisis, and pressure from opposition politicians and human rights groups, Japan remains one of the most unwelcoming countries for refugees - only 28 were given asylum in 2016, after 27 in 2015, the latest statistics reveal.

The figure was obtained by Reuters from a government document scheduled for release Friday. In total, there were 10,901 asylum applications, an increase of 44 percent on 2015, and nearly 10 times as many as in 2010.

Among those allowed to settle in Japan in 2016 were a total of seven Afghans, four Ethiopians and three Eritreans, while most applications came from Indonesia, Nepal and the Philippines, Reuters said. A further 97 people received residence permits on humanitarian grounds, without obtaining the refugee designation.

The Japanese government has not commented on the yet-to-be released document.

Last week, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe refused opposition calls to join in the condemnation of Donald Trump's ban on arrivals from seven troubled Muslim-majority states, calling it an "domestic matter."

Boris Johnson pushed for Saudi weapons sales after Yemen funeral strike, saying 'threshold for refusal hasn't been reached'

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson pushed for continued arms sales to Saudi Arabia in the wake of a deadly airstrike on a funeral in Yemen which killed 140 people, it has been revealed.

In a letter to UK secretary of State for International Trade Liam Fox, published by the Guardian and dated November 8, Johnson wrote: "I am aware you have deferred a decision on four export licence applications to supply the Royal Saudi Air Force with equipment which could be used in the conflict in Yemen."

He advised Fox to proceed with the arms sales. "The issue is extremely finely balanced, but I judge at present the Saudis appear committed both to improving processes and to taking action to address failures/individual incidents."

He went on to say "the clear risk threshold for refusal ... has not yet been reached."

Fox then recommended the licences be approved in light of the assessment provided by Johnson.

In his reply to Johnson, he warned of inherent risks because of the "grave situation" in Yemen and other reasons which were redacted.

Officials in the White House are looking into leaks about President Donald Trump's phone calls with foreign heads of state, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling them "very concerning."

"We're looking into the situation, yes, and it's very concerning," White House press secretary Sean Spicer said on Thursday as quoted by the Hill.

Spicer stressed that the way parts of the information are being revealed "is clearly a breach of a lot of protocols and laws."

The spokesperson noted that Trump is worried by the leaks, adding that "the idea that you can't have a conversation without that information getting out is concerning," Spicer said.

He declined to elaborate on the nature of the investigation. Details of Trump's phone calls with Putin and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull have been leaked in recent days, alongside portions of the conversations with the heads of Mexico and France.

The Saudi-led coalition has intensified its strikes on the Yemen port of Hodeidah, which could result in civilians getting trapped, the United Nations human rights office has warned. This also threatens a humanitarian operation aimed at delivering vital supplies.

UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville expressed concerns that the situation may resemble al-Mokha, where civilians were trapped in fighting earlier this month.

"Civilians were trapped during the fighting [in al-Mokha], there are real fears the situation will repeat itself in the port of Hodeidah where air strikes are apparently already intensifying," Colville told a Geneva news briefing, as quoted by Reuters.

A spokesman for Yemen's government stated on Friday that its forces had taken control of al-Mokha after weeks of deadly fighting, AFP reported.

The Saudi-led coalition, which began airstrikes in order to stop Houthi advances in Yemen in March 2015, has long been accused of civilian casualties, an allegation which it has adamantly denied.

The knives come out: Schauble says Martin Schulz is the German Donald Trump

Wolfgang Schauble
Economic hitman extraordinaire Wolfgang Schauble
Earlier this week we reported that Germany's default swaps spiked to the highest level since Brexit after a surprising new poll from INSA showed that Angela Merkel's CDU would get only 30% of the vote, while the suddenly resurgent SPD would get 31% of the vote. This means that if the German elections were held today, the SPD's new head, Martin Schulz, would enter any coalition talks as the leader of the largest party, hence becoming Chancellor.
Germany INSA poll chart
It also means that a SPD-Green-Left coalition would currently win exactly 50% of seats, so that a government without the CDU/CSU could even be possible. In effect, the SPD has gained 10%-points of support in past two (weekly) INSA polls, taking votes away from all other parties (see chart below). Interestingly, the AfD has also suffered a significant decline.
