The anti-Kaspersky campaign: Spies and spin, because Kaspersky can't be breached

kaspersky
Since May 2017 certain U.S. circles openly campaign against security products provided by the Russian company Kaspersky Labs. Three recent stories claim involvement of the software in rather fantastic "Russian hackers" stories. It is a renewed attack after a silent spy campaign in 2015 against Kaspersky had failed. The current stories seem inconsistent, lack logic and evidence.

If one believes all the newly made claims then Israel hacked Kaspersky, which was hacking an NSA employee who had stolen NSA hacks, while being hacked by Russia which was hacked by the NSA, while the NSA was warned by Israel about Russian hacks. Makes sense?

The Russian company Kaspersky Lab makes and sells the probably best anti-virus protection software available. All anti-virus software packages need full access to the system they run on. It is the only way to assure that the packages themselves are not compromised by some super-virus. Anti-virus packages upload malware they find for further analysis. They also update themselves through a secure internet connection. This enables the product to detect new viruses soon after they have been discovered in the wild. Both of the characteristics, full system access and online-update, make these tools inherently dangerous. They can be abused either by their producer or by someone who infiltrates the producers systems.

Computer geeks call such products "snake-oil" as they promise a grade of security that can not be guaranteed, even while they themselves constitute a significant security risk. One either must trust such anti-virus packages or not use them at all.

Syria rebel chief Mohammed Alloush: New de-escalation zone set up in Syria, thanks to the Russian and Egyptian efforts

Syria rebel chief Mohammed Alloush
Three jihadist groups have reportedly submitted to an Egypt-brokered cease-fire agreement for the areas located south of the Syrian capital city of Damascus.

The agreement, whose guarantor is Russia, was signed to allow the return of thousands of displaced people who formerly used to live in the areas now occupied by the jihadists.

Mohammed Alloush, the head of the notorious terrorist group Jaysh Al Islam, praised Egypt for its "outstanding efforts" of preserving the Syrian unity and supporting the political solution in the country, adding that it was agreed to hold another meeting sponsored by Egypt in the nearby future.

If the shoe fits: Russia once again accuses US-led coalition of "pretending to fight ISIS"

Russia has once again accused the US-led coalition in Iraq and Syria of facilitating the entry of Islamic State terrorists into Syria in order to hinder the advance of the Syrian Army and its allies. On Tuesday Russia's defense ministry accused the US of merely "pretending" to fight ISIS in a way designed to put maximum pressure on Syrian and Russian front line defenses in Syria's east. Russian military spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov said, "Everyone sees that the U.S.-led coalition is pretending to fight Islamic State, above all in Iraq, but continuing to allegedly fight Islamic State in Syria actively for some reason."

The accusation comes a little over two weeks after Russia released aerial images allegedly showing ISIS, the SDF (US-backed "Syrian Democratic Forces"), and US special forces working side-by-side on the battlefield against Syrian and Russian forces in Deir Ezzor, Syria. While the previous charges implied some level of close coordination between US-backed forces and ISIS in the region, the new claims point to coalition air power intentionally facilitating and utilizing ISIS movements to its advantage: "The actions of the Pentagon and the coalition demand an explanation. Is their change of tack a desire to complicate as much as they can the Syrian army's operation, backed by the Russian air force, to take back Syrian territory to the east of the Euphrates?" asked Konashenkov. He continued with, "Or is it an artful move to drive Islamic State terrorists out of Iraq by forcing them into Syria and into the path of the Russian air force's pinpoint bombing?"

Trump meets with Kissinger again in White House

trump kissinger
Henry Kissinger, a former secretary of state and a national security adviser under Presidents Nixon and Ford, met with President Trump Tuesday in the Oval Office, the second time the two have publicly convened since the inauguration.

Trump told reporters that Kissinger is a "man of immense talent, experience and knowledge." He also reiterated that he has confidence in current Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who called the president a "moron," according to a recent NBC News report. Trump said in a Forbes interview that he could beat Tillerson on an IQ test, but he refused to answer any questions about it when asked in the Oval Office.

Asked if he undercut Tillerson in a recent tweet when the president said the secretary's diplomatic efforts in North Korea were useless, Trump said, "I did not undercut anybody. I don't believe in undercutting anybody."

"Henry Kissinger has been a friend of mine," Trump said. "I've liked him. I've respected him. But we've been friends for a long time, long before my emergence into the world of politics, which has not been too long."

The Harvey Weinstein sexual assault scandal has taken a decidedly political turn, with former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton catching major flack on social media for her belated and weak attempt to distance herself from the disgraced Hollywood producer.

Speaking to CNN on Wednesday, Clinton said that she would donate campaign contributions Weinstein had given her over the years to charities. She also condemned his behavior in broad terms, saying she was "sick" and "shocked" about the multiple sexual assault allegations surrounding the producer.

"I was appalled. It was something that was just intolerable in every way," Clinton said. "And you know, like so many people who've come forward and spoken out, this was a different side of a person who I and many others had known in the past," she added, deliberately using the past tense.

'We don't need you': President Erdogan accuses Washington of 'sacrificing' relations with Turkey

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused Washington of "sacrificing" relations with Ankara, and has blamed the ongoing diplomatic dispute on a US ambassador "who doesn't know his place."

"Let me be very clear, the person who caused this is the ambassador here. It is unacceptable for the United States to sacrifice a strategic partner to an ambassador who doesn't know his place," Erdogan told provincial governors in Ankara on Thursday, as quoted by Reuters.

Erdogan was referencing outgoing US Ambassador John Bass, whom the Turkish president previously accused of acting alone in the decision to suspend the issuance of visas to Turkish citizens, rather than on behalf of the United States government.

Erdogan reiterated that belief on Thursday.

The departments of State and Justice have agreed to share information about employers discriminating against American workers and misusing foreign worker visas. It is the latest effort by the Trump administration to crack down on immigration abuses.

"Employers that discriminate against qualified US workers by favoring foreign visa workers will be held accountable," said Acting Assistant Attorney General John M. Core of the DOJ civil rights division, announcing the sharing agreement on Wednesday. "Today's agreement reflects the Civil Rights Division's commitment to use all available tools, including collaboration with other federal agencies, to protect US workers from discrimination."

Under the memorandum of understanding, the departments will give increased scrutiny to H-1B, H-2A and H-2B visas.

3 US Congressmen attempting force US to stop aiding Saudi's "unconstitutional" war in Yemen

A group of Congressmen from both major parties is hoping to force a vote over Washington's involvement in Yemen, with a resolution invoking the War Powers Act to force the US to stop aiding the Saudi-led coalition in its bombing campaign.

Three members of the US House of Representatives tried to illustrate the horrors of the Yemen conflict by comparing it to a hypothetical war affecting the US state of Washington ‒ with a population of 7.3 million ‒ "on the brink of starvation, with the port city of Seattle under a naval and aerial blockade, leaving it unable to receive and distribute countless tons of food and aid that is waiting offshore."

"This nightmare scenario is akin to the obscene reality occurring in the Middle East's poorest country, Yemen, at the hand of the region's richest, Saudi Arabia, with unyielding support from the US military that Congress has not authorized and therefore violates the Constitution," wrote Representatives Ro Khanna (D-California), Mark Pocan (D-Wisconsin) and Walter Jones (R-North Carolina) in a New York Times op-ed Tuesday.

Russia wants US to explain its blindness regarding militants operating near US forces in Syria

The Russian Defense Ministry has raised the issue of some 300 Daesh terrorists on pickup trucks infiltrating a US-controlled zone in Syria's al-Tanf region.

The Russian Defense Ministry has urged "the US side to explain its selective blindness regarding militants" operating near US forces in Syria.

The ministry's spokesman said the 300 Daesh militants had tried to block a strategically important road linking Damascus and Deir ez-Zor, which is used for delivering humanitarian aid to civilians and supplies for the Syrian Army.
