Persian gulf disarray - Qatar's ace is Saudi nemesis

The draconian deadline by the Saudi axis on Qatar failed to force surrender. Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries have now extended the deadline till later this week. In a battle of nerves, the Saudi rulers blinked first.

This is partly because the Saudi-led coalition of Bahrain, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt have over-reached in their showdown with Qatar. The tiny gas-rich emirate may be a lightweight in terms of territorial size and population, but it is proving to be no push-over.

And there are sound reasons why the Qataris are defiant. Owing to its superabundant natural gas reserves and a native population of only some 300,000, Qatar is the richest country in the world on a per capita basis. The blockade mounted by the other Arab countries is not harming the emirate, especially given that it has found alternative trading sources for food, water and other goods from Turkey and Iran.

Since the imposed deadline nearly two weeks ago by the Saudi group, Qatar has adamantly said it would not acquiesce to a list of severe demands. Those demands included the Al Thani rulers in Doha ceasing all diplomatic ties with Iran, expelling Turkish troops from the territory, financial reparations, and closing down the Al Jazeera news station. It was always an unrealistic ultimatum. As the Qatari rulers noted, the move was simply an audacious bid to over-ride the country's sovereignty.

Duterte's smart decision: China hails 'golden period' of relations with Philippines

Rodrigo Duterte and Xi Jinping
President Duterte's decision to approach China as a partner rather than an adversary has already paid off and it will help secure prosperity for Philippines in the long term future.

Many in Philippines saw President Rodrigo Duterte's overtures to China as a gamble, some called it foolish, but the reality is that sooner or later all nations of the region will have to acknowledge that there is a global super-power at their back door and that super-power is not the United States.

China will dominate the region as much as the US has dominated North and South America since the 19th century. However, China's dominance is not one that is imperial, it is one based on the pragmatic nature of Chinese mega-commerce as well as China's insistence that its sovereignty not be molested by any nations.

The fact that yesterday, China scrambled a fleet and several aircraft to intercept a US vessel which strayed into Chinese territorial waters in the South China Sea is proof positive that China is willing to take on literally any nation that provokes Beijing in the region.

Washington is damaging peace and stability in the South China Sea and is undermining China-US relations, Beijing said. The comments come a day after the USS Stethem, a guided-missile destroyer, sailed near the disputed Paracel Islands in the region.

The US once again sent warships into the territorial waters of China, seriously damaging the strategic mutual trust between the two sides, Defense Ministry spokesman Senior Colonel Wu Qian said in a statement on Monday, as cited by Chinese media.

According to Wu, Washington's actions undermine the development of Chinese-US military relations, sour the political atmosphere and damage regional peace and stability.

Xi Jinping: S. Korea THAAD deployment undermines regional stability

The deployment of the US THAAD anti-missile systems in South Korea undermines security on the Korean peninsula and in the entire region while contributing nothing to the process of denuclearization of North Korea, China's President Xi Jinping said.
"The deployment of the US THAAD missile defense system in South Korea does serious damage to the strategic security interests of all countries in the region, including China and Russia, and disrupts the regional strategic balance," Xi warned ahead of his visit to Moscow in an interview with TASS news agency and the Rossiyskya Gazeta daily.

The Chinese president also said that this move would not help denuclearize Pyongyang in any way and would by no means contribute to maintaining stability and peace in the region as it would only provoke further tensions. He added that Beijing already repeatedly expressed its deep concern over this issue.

Comment: This is what happens when you compound stupid on top of stupid: American foreign policy. There is NO military solution to North Korea. And Xi is 100% correct when it comes to THAAD. But good luck getting anyone in the American establishment to accept that. They'd insist 2+2=5 if Xi insisted that it equals 4.

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman cautioned the country's northern neighbors against testing the Jewish State's patience following numerous cases of spillover fire from Syria.

On Saturday, two stray mortars landed near a security fence in Israel's Golan Heights in the latest of a series of such incidents in just one week. The projectiles are believed to be from fighting between the Bashar Assad regime and rebel groups near the city of Quneitra. They caused no injuries or damage to property.

The IDF responded with a retaliatory raid targeting a Syrian military post near the Naba Fawar base.

Comment: Update: Syrian Army seizes Israeli equipment supplied to Al-Qaeda in the Golan Heights
The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) foiled another major assault by the Al-Qaeda linked rebels in the Golan Heights this past weekend, seizing a large cache of equipment supplied by Israel in the process.

According to the Golani Regiment of the National Defense Forces (NDF), the Syrian Arab Army seized Israeli supplied medical kits and weapons that belonged to the Al-Qaeda linked "Hay'at Tahrir Al-Sham" militant group near the town of Hamadiyah on Sunday.

The Israeli military has been aiding the jihadist rebels in the Golan Heights with their constant airstrikes on the Syrian Arab Army's positions near the city of Al-Ba'ath.

As a result of these Israeli airstrikes, the jihadist rebels have used these airborne attacks to storm the Syrian Army's defenses and breach their front-lines at Al-Ba'ath City.
Israeli Army Ready to Enter Southern Syria with ISIL Assistance
The Arabic-language al-Ghad paper quoted Abu Yaqoub, the political advisor of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), as saying that the Israeli army is planning to stormed Hawz Yarmouk region that is under the control of the ISIL-affiliated terrorist group of Khalid Bin Walid Jeish to occupy the region on the pretext of war on terrorism.

Yaqoub told al-Ghad that the footprint of the Israeli intelligence Mossad can be seen in the sudden rapid ideological change of the leadership of Khalid Bin Walid Jeish that was previously affiliated to the FSA and later joined the ISIL, adding that similar to Turkey that entered Northern Syria the Israeli army will enter Hawz Yarmouk.

Mohammad Seif, a field commander of the FSA, pointed to the possibility of Israeli army plan to enter Hawz Yarmouk, and said, "Israel intends to create a buffer zone in Hawz Yarmouk region."

He further added that the Israeli media have recently paid more attention to the presence of Khalid Bin Walid Jeish near the border.

Relevant reports said on Saturday that the Israeli Air Force struck the Syrian Army troops' strongholds in the Southern province of Quneitra for the fourth time in a row.

An Israeli military helicopter targeted two positions of the Syrian Army in areas near the town of Eastern al-Samadaniyeh and another position around the town of al-Ba'ath.

No accurate information has been released on the possible damage to the Syrian army.

In the meantime, the Arabic-language Elam al-Harbi news reported that the terrorists of Al-Nusra Front (also known as Fatah al-Sham Front or the Levant Liberation Board) have intentionally increased their mortar attacks on occupied lands in the Golan Heights to give another pretext to the Israeli forces to target the Syrian Army's strongholds in Quneitra.

WSJ: Saudi Arabia moving to silence deposed crown prince and political dissidents

© LUCAS JACKSON/REUTERSSaudi Arabia’s newly elevated crown prince has limited the movements of Mohammed bin Nayef, pictured in New York last year.
The new heir to Saudi Arabia's throne has launched a crackdown on dissent in recent weeks, attempting to silence activists and critical clerics as well as his deposed predecessor, according to U.S. and Saudi officials familiar with the events.

King Salman upended Saudi Arabia's succession order last month by naming his 31-year-old son, Mohammed bin Salman, crown prince and next in line to the throne, and sidelining his nephew and heir apparent, Mohammed bin Nayef, who has deep ties to U.S. intelligence and is widely viewed by U.S. officials as a stabilizing force in the region.

The newly elevated crown prince has limited the movements of Mohammed bin Nayef, the officials said. He has also replaced Mohammed bin Nayef's guards with ones loyal to the royal court, they said, in a bid to ensure that Mohammed bin Nayef doesn't take any steps to rally support.

"They want to make sure nothing is being plotted," one of these people said.

Referring to Mohammed bin Nayef, a representative of the Saudi royal court said in a text message that there were "no restrictions on his movement whatsoever, either in or outside of Saudi Arabia." The prince has hosted guests since the leadership change, the representative wrote in an emailed statement.

On Saturday, a diplomatic source told Sputnik that officers of the Center for Syrian Reconciliation have collected solid evidence to prove that Syrian militants use foreign-produced weapons and ammunition.

Among the findings were fragments of a United States-produced BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missile, discovered in the eastern suburb of Damascus.

On Saturday, the Center for Syrian Reconciliation also registered 48 cases of mortar shelling in the Al-Qabas quarter, in the eastern Damascus suburb.
"Russian officers of the Center for Syrian Reconciliation registered on Saturday 48 mortar shelling of the Al-Qabas quarter from the positions of illegal armed formations in Ein Tarma and Jobar. Moreover, they gathered incontestable evidence proving that terrorists use foreign weapons and ammunition — took photos of shatters of the shells produced abroad with serial numbers," the source said.

The Duran recommended such a classification in June of 2017.

The US state of New Jersey has heeded advice published in The Duran and has formally listed the group Antifa as a domestic terrorist organisation.

The new classification appears on the website of the New Jersey Department of Homeland Security, along with a description of some of the group's violent activities.

Antifa has committed multiple acts of violence and aggression in the United States against civilians and public figures. Its branches have also committed atrocious attacks in Europe.

Antifa is also represented among non-governmental Kurdish fighters in Syria whose aims threaten the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, Iraq, Iran and Turkey.

The update from the New Jersey Department of Homeland Security is welcomed by those who oppose far-left terrorism.
