Government logic: IRS paid private debt collectors $20 million to recoup $6.7 million from low-income Americans

Math does not appear to be their strong suit.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) spent millions of dollars over the past financial year to contract private debt collectors that targeted some of Americas poorest citizens for unpaid taxes and only recovered a small fraction of the funds they were supposed to return to the agency, a new report released on Wednesday found.

The report, by the independent Taxpayer Advocate Service, found that the debt collectors had cost the IRS $20 million but had only brought in $6.7 million - less than one percent of the total amount targeted for collection. In some cases, the private agencies received commissions for work they hadn't actually carried out.

This video release follows the first undercover Twitter exposé Project Veritas released on January 10th which showed Twitter Senior Network Security Engineer Clay Haynes saying that Twitter is "more than happy to help the Department of Justice with their little [President Donald Trump] investigation." Twitter responded to the video with a statement shortly after that release, stating "the individual depicted in this video was speaking in a personal capacity and does not represent of speak for Twitter." The video released by Project Veritas today features eight employees, and a Project Veritas spokesman said there are more videos featuring additional employees coming.

President Donald Trump repeated an earlier call for an internet tax, in a thinly veiled shot at Amazon's Jeff Bezos, who owns The Washington Post.

"The internet - they're going to have to start paying sales tax because it's very unfair what's happening to our retailers all over the country that are put out of business," Trump said Wednesday.

Trump also reiterated concerns about Amazon's effect on the U.S. Postal Service as it struggles to keep up with online orders.

The Clinton Foundation swamp is inching ever closer to the drain

bill hillary clinton
Things are going downhill fast for the Clinton crime family.

Weeks ago, a Trump administration Executive Order imposed immediate sanctions and asset seizures on the world's most wicked crooks and warlords, implicating countless individuals in the immediate orbit of Bill and Hillary Clinton. President Donald J. Trump followed the EO with a letter instituting a National Emergency to facilitate the EO's enforcement, and a proclamation naming January National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

Since the December 21st EO, it has come to light that the FBI has for months been engaged in an ongoing criminal investigation into the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation. Under the guise of philanthropy, the Foundation has served the Clintons as a vehicle to enrich themselves while engaging in extensive political corruption; immediately after taking an oath to serve the American people in 2009, Clinton proceeded to use the Foundation to advance her personal interests in anticipation of the 2016 election, abusing the authority of her office the entirety of her tenure serving as America's top diplomat during President Barack Obama's first term in office.

The Hill reports:
FBI agents from Little Rock, Ark., where the foundation was started, have taken the lead in the investigation and have interviewed at least one witness in the last month, and law enforcement officials said additional activities are expected in the coming weeks. [...] The probe is examining whether the Clintons promised or performed any policy favors in return for largesse to their charitable efforts or whether donors made commitments of donations in hopes of securing government outcomes.

The probe may also examine whether any tax-exempt assets were converted for personal or political use and whether the foundation complied with applicable tax laws, the officials said.

One witness recently interviewed by the FBI described the session to The Hill as "extremely professional and unquestionably thorough" and focused on questions about whether donors to Clinton charitable efforts received any favorable treatment from the Obama administration.

Stephen F. Cohen: The US betrayed Russia, but neither NY Times nor Washington Post have reported it

Mikhail Gorbachev, George Bush Sr.
New evidence that Washington broke its promise not to expand NATO "one inch eastward" - a fateful decision with ongoing ramifications - has not been reported by The New York Times or other agenda-setting media outlets

John Batchelor has a very popular political talk show on America's largest radio network, WABC.

He has Stephen Cohen on live in the studio almost every week for a full 45 minute segment, the only guest he gives that much time to.

Why? Because Cohen's appearances are killing the ratings. America seems to be thirsting for an alternative and critical view of Obama's Russia policy.

The history of the Ukrainian crisis, which has made everything it affected worse, is distorted by political myths and American media malpractice.

Stephen F. Cohen, professor emeritus of Russian studies and politics at NYU and Princeton, and radio-show host John Batchelor continue their (usually) weekly discussions of the new US-Russian Cold War. (Previous installments, now in their fourth year, can be found here at TheNation.com.)

Ukraine preparing drone attack in Crimea says former deputy PM 'main goal is information noise'

drone
A Russian State Duma deputy has warned of an impending drone attack planned by Ukrainian special services against the annexed Crimean peninsula.

After Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, Moscow has repeatedly accused Kiev of plotting attacks against the Black Sea peninsula.

Ex-Crimean Deputy Prime Minister Ruslan Balbek claimed that the drone attack would bear similarities to last week's strike on Russian military installations in Syria, the state-run RIA Novosti news agency reported on Thursday.

Author of error-filled 'Fire and Fury' book says he caused Steve Bannon's downfall

Michael Wolff Fire and Fury Trump book author
The palace intrigue is everywhere with Michael Wolff's error-riddled book, "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House." Yet, there's also some pushback from the news media over its veracity. Maggie Haberman of The New York Times said there are parts of it that are just wrong. CNN's Jake Tapper also torched the book's accuracy. His colleague Alisyn Camerota also told her viewers that this book really isn't journalism. You would think that a book about the Trump White House would include speaking with members of the president's cabinet; Wolff did no such thing. The book caused a rift between Breitbart's soon to be former executive chairman Steve Bannon, who served as chief White House strategist, and President Trump, namely over calling Donald Trump Jr.'s July 2016 meeting with the Russians, which amounted to nothing, treasonous. Trump responded by saying that Bannon, who had already left the White House, had lost his mind. It didn't take long for Bannon's allies to bolt from him. The Mercer family, Bannon's main financial ally, decided to cut ties shortly after this blow up. Matt Drudge decided to move on, even Rush Limbaugh said he was done with him.

Comment: By now it has become clear that the book is full of inaccuracies and that instead of journalism, it is gossip. However, even gossip contains a kernel of truth, and both Trump and Bannon know it. The proof is that this gossip was enough to cause the rift between the two of them.

Ravaged by the forces promoting conflict, a real change of government in Kiev is the only salvation for this long-suffering country

The junta currently in control of Ukraine is delighted U.S. President Donald Trump has become history's most dangerous loose cannon. The oligarch controlled media in Kiev began churning out the propaganda right after Trump approved a plan to provide lethal defensive weapons to the regime. The key weapons system involved, the Javelin anti-tank missiles caused a kind-of "new toy" delight from Ukraine's reporters. My country appears today as the international "pusher man" for an arms trade that tresembles the Columbia cocaine cartels. More importantly for the people of Ukraine is whether, or not, the liberal world cartel can be beaten back. Here's some thoughts on this.

The good news about the Trump Presidency is that stupid can be good!

Donald Trump cartoon
Just a few days shy of the first year since the inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States I think that it would be reasonable to say that pretty much everybody, besides the Neocons and a few unconditional supporters, is now feeling quite appalled at what the past year brought to the US and the planet. Those who hated Trump don't hate him any less, while those who had hopes for Trump, such as myself, now have to accept that those hopes never materialized. I think that if we imagine a Hillary Presidency then the word "evil" would be a good way to describe what such a Presidency would most likely have been like. Likewise, if I had to chose a single word to describe the Trump Presidency, at least so far, I think that that word should be "stupid". I won't even bother, as I had initially planned, to list all the stupid things Trump has said and done since his inauguration (those who think otherwise might as well stop reading here). I will say that it gives me no pleasure writing this because I also had hopes that Trump would fulfill at least some of his campaign promises (even though most of my support for him was based on the fact that he was not Hillary who, I still believe, would have brought the US and Russia to war against each other). Furthermore, each time I recall Trump's inauguration speech I have this painful sense of a most important and totally missed opportunity: to finally restore the sovereignty of the US to the people of the US and to return to a civilized and rational international policy. Alas, this did not happen and that is a reality we have to accept and deal with.
