German president: 'We cannot declare Russia, the country and its people, to be an enemy'

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for ending the demonization of Russia and its people on Sunday. He added that Germany should do more to help de-escalate tensions, given his country's unique history with Russia.

Steinmeier warned that the US-led airstrikes in Syria in the early hours of Saturday morning raised the risk of direct confrontation between US and Russian forces operating in the Syrian theater. Relations between the US and Russia have hit a post-Cold War low after the attack, which followed the alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma, Syria, last week. The Syrian regime has denied allegations that it gassed its own people, particularly in an area where, and a time when, its forces were on the brink of total victory.

James Comey faces threat of clampdown on the eve of his book tour

For James Comey, the heat is on.

The former FBI director's highly anticipated memoir, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership," hasn't hit bookshelves yet - that happens on Tuesday - but already there have been copies leaked to the media, which may be a fitting chapter in the Comey saga.

Excerpts from the book and clips from his first TV interview since being fired last year show Comey won't be shying away from criticizing the man who cut his FBI career short, President Trump, even taking cheap shots such as describing the president's ties as being "too long."

Comment: Comey's got a lot of nerve going off on a book tour, flagrant self-promotion, considering he still has a lot to answer for. This whole thing could (and hopefully will) blow up in his face.

Analyst: US acting as 'ISIS air force' in Syria, spreads 'conscious, transparent lie' on chemical weapons

The massive missile strikes the US and allies conducted against Syria actually benefit terrorist groups, and prevented inspectors from proving if chemical weapons were used in Douma, international analysts told RT.

Washington, London, and Paris used last week's alleged chemical attack in Douma, near Damascus, as the pretext for an early morning missile attack on civilian and military targets in Syria.

The air invasion came just hours before a group of inspectors dispatched by the UN's Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) was scheduled to visit Douma in order to find out if any chemical weapons were used there. This made the timing even more suspicious, experts say.

To Jim Jatras, a former US foreign service officer, "preventing a real investigation in Douma was one of the reasons for [the strike]."

"So, the big hurry here is, in my opinion, is that you've got [OPCW] inspectors on the ground in Damascus now, ready to go now and confirm... there wasn't any attack."

Governmental hypocrisy: Will US ever finish destroying its stockpile of chemical weapons?

US chemicla weapons stockpile

After signing the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) the US failed to destroy them by the 2012 deadline, with next deadline set for 2023. Russia who possessed the biggest stockpile among CWC signees (the US was the second biggest) completed the disposal process in 2017.

The long dormant issue of chemical weapons was first "awakened" by the Syrian conflict, where these armaments were allegedly used. But the most recent chemical weapons scandal took place in the UK, where Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter were supposedly poisoned by the nerve agent A-234.

Britain and other western countries have accused Moscow of the so-called "attack" on Skripal, although official investigations have yet to be concluded on the matter and Russia having completed the process of eliminating of chemical weapons in accordance with CWC. At the same time, not all signees to the convention did so on time, despite having the vast resources to do so, such as the US, who still needs to destroy the last 10% of its arsenal. Sputnik has gathered curious facts on the American chemical weapons disposal program.

China's Xi to Trump: 'Arrogance will get you nowhere' - "peaceful development and cooperation" are key

U.S. President Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping shake hands after making joint statements at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, November 9, 2017

China's President Xi Jinping had a message for his US counterpart Donald Trump this week: "Arrogance will get you nowhere." He added that cooperation and dialogue were the only way forward to resolve disputes in today's world.

Xi was speaking about trade and commerce, but his remarks have wider resonance as the Trump administration high-handedly ratchets up dangerous political tensions towards Russia, Iran and the Middle East.

"The Cold War and zero-sum mentality looks out of place in today's world," said the Chinese president. "Arrogance or only focusing one's own interests will get nowhere. Only peaceful development and cooperation can truly bring win-win or all-win results," added Xi, while addressing the Boao Forum for Asia in China's southern province of Hainan.

The Clinton Mafia: Comey isn't the first to compare a president to a mob boss

Clintons

If former FBI Director James Comey believes he's the first official to liken a president's actions to that of the mafia, he would be sorely wrong. In Comey's new book he says President Donald Trump worked for months to secure his loyalty through a series of meetings and phone calls during the transition period and compared the president to a mob boss, according to ABC News, which received an early copy of the book scheduled for release next week.

The same happened to former President Bill Clinton. In fact, there was insurmountable evidence that came to light in the final weeks of Clinton's 1996 campaign involving a Chinese fundraising scandal that plagued Clinton's election and involved an FBI investigation, as well as Congressional hearings.

Comment: Interesting in how many ways the Clintons have, by 'hook' and 'crook', set the standard.

Putin to Arab League summit: Russia is ready for cooperation in Iraq and Syria recovery efforts

Moscow is prepared to join forces with the Arab League in an effort to help Iraq and Syria recover from protracted wars, Russian President Vladimir Putin said. He also urged that Arab nations' sovereignty be respected.

"Russia is ready for a multifaceted cooperation with the Arab League in order to ensure regional security," Putin said on Sunday in an address to the 22-member alliance. The Russian president said defeating Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in many parts of Iraq and Syria provides an opening for "boosting political reconciliation and post-conflict reconstruction in these countries, [and] solving pressing humanitarian issues."

It is essential to continue combatting terrorism in the region, but "unconditional respect" of Arab nations' sovereignty and territorial integrity are also important, Putin stated, adding that it is impossible to make lasting peace in the Middle East without finding "a fundamental solution" to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

UN ambassador Haley: US won't remove troops from Syria until goals accomplished

NikkiHaley
© FOX NEWSUN Ambassador Nikki Haley
The US will not pull its troops out of Syria until its goals are accomplished there, Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said. This comes after Washington carried out airstrikes in Syria in response to an alleged chemical attack.

US currently has over 2,000 troops in Syria and a number of contractors.

While it is America's goals to see the troops come home, "we are not going to leave until we know we have accomplished those things," she told Fox News Sunday.

Haley added that the US wants to ensure that chemical weapons are not used in a way that is of risk to US interests, Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) is defeated, and Iran's actions are monitored. "Be very clear, if we leave, when we leave, it will be because we know that everything is moving forward," Haley added.

Asked about US-Russia relations, she said they are "very strained," but the US still hopes to mend ties. At the same time, the US envoy to the UN ruled out any bilateral contacts with the Syrian government, saying that Washington would not "have any one-on-one talks" with Damascus.

On Saturday Haley said that the US' guns are "locked and loaded," and that Washington will not hesitate to strike if a chemical attack in Syria takes place again.

Comment: Prime setup for an Israeli false flag...?

Comment: The US won't go home until Syria's resources are in its back pocket, the money on reconstruction has been made and it has permanent military facilities shouting distance from Iran. Is the US willing to skip the war to reap the riches it wants? It certainly won't go home without a payoff if it goes home at all.

Trump blasts the FBI in Twitter tirade - 'Attorney-client privilege a thing of the past'

Trump

US President Donald Trump has taken a break from this weekend's bombing of Syria to once again decry the federal investigation into one of his many, many lawyers, whose offices were raided earlier this week.

Trump made the remarks in reference to the FBI raids on the offices of attorney Michael Cohen on Tuesday. Many of Cohen's private business records and correspondences were seized in the raid, ostensibly launched under the guise of a bank fraud investigation.
"Attorney Client privilege is now a thing of the past. I have many (too many!) lawyers and they are probably wondering when their offices, and even homes, are going to be raided with everything, including their phones and computers, taken. All lawyers are deflated and concerned!" Trump wrote.
Earlier in the week, Cohen's own attorney, Todd Harrison, tried and failed to obtain a temporary restraining order to prevent investigators from sifting through the potentially "thousands of privileged communications." Harrison was accused by prosecutors of employing delaying tactics, but US District Judge Kimba Wood ordered Cohen to appear in court Monday after three separate hearings on Friday.

Corbyn asks 'where's the legal basis' for Syria missile strikes?

Corbyn
© IndependentOpposition Leader Jeremy Corbyn
UK opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has challenged the British government's legal basis for carrying out missile strikes on Syria, labelling the "humanitarian" justification "legally debatable."

The Labour leader said Prime Minister Theresa May decided to participate in the US-led strikes sometime last week and should have recalled Parliament to have a debate and vote on the issue. Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show on the BBC, Corbyn then hit out at the government citing humanitarian reasons to launch the missiles describing the argument as a "legally debatable concept."

"It looked awfully to me as though the prime minister was more interested in following Donald Trump's lead than anything else. This is policy made up by Twitter."

Corbyn also said he can only countenance involvement in Syria if there is a United Nations authority behind it and urged Trump to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

Comment: Perhaps the US, France and UK should have 'considered the negotiation table' before bombing Syria (again).
