Obama told Biden advisers not to let the former Veep 'damage his legacy' in his 2020 presidential run

biden obama
Former President Barack Obama and Joe Biden have an extremely close relationship, but that reportedly hasn't alleviated concerns Obama has about the former vice president's 2020 campaign.

Obama spoke with Biden about the prospect of him running multiple times before the former vice president hopped into the race, and "took pains to cast his doubts about the campaign in personal terms," according to a New York Times report.

A person familiar with the exchange told The Times that Obama said to Biden, "You don't have to do this, Joe, you really don't." But Biden responded that he felt he had an obligation to take on President Donald Trump and that he wouldn't be able to forgive himself if he didn't give it a shot.

Comment: Despite the fact that Obama is a sanctimonious, insufferable ass, he's not wrong here. So far Biden's campaign has been one gaff after another. Leave it to a complete narcissist to know when someone is making them look bad.

Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib tweets that visiting her grandmother under 'oppressive conditions' would stand against everything she believes in; Rich Edson has the latest from the State Department.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., indicated Friday that she will not travel to the West Bank to visit family, despite getting permission hours before from Israel's interior minister -- following a diplomatic firestorm over the government's earlier refusal to allow her and a colleague entry as part of a broader visit.

"I have decided that visiting my grandmother under these oppressive conditions stands against everything I believe in--fighting against racism, oppression & injustice," she tweeted.

This was an apparent reference to Tlaib's earlier pledge not to promote boycotts of Israel during her visit.

Comment: More evidence of just how dictatorial and afraid of exposure Israel is:

Between F-16 sale to Taiwan, Hong Kong and tariffs, China has no reason to trust US

Word that US President Donald Trump is pushing for a sale of F-16 fighters to Taiwan worth $8 billion is unlikely to help a 'deal' with China, as Beijing's already blaming Washington for the Hong Kong protests and the tariff war.

The proposed sale of 66 modernized jet fighters is still a rumor, as no official notice has been sent to Congress from the State Department or the Pentagon as of yet. However, it appears to have been requested by the Taiwanese authorities and quickly endorsed by prominent lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

"The sale of F-16s to Taiwan sends a strong message about the US commitment to security and democracy in the Indo-Pacific," the chairman and ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee said on Friday in a joint statement, adding they are "pleased the Administration is moving forward" with it.

Indian Defense minister hints at 'No First Use' Policy may change amid tension with Pakistan

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today underscored that India reserves the right to change its policy of 'No First Use', which has been the cornerstone of India's nuclear weapons policy for decades. The government firmly stands by its 'No First Use' policy but "what happens in future will depend on the circumstances," the minister said at Pokhran in Rajasthan, the site of two nuclear tests by India.

"Pokhran is the area which witnessed Atalji (former prime minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee's) firm resolve to make India a nuclear power and yet remain firmly committed to the doctrine of 'No First Use'. It is true that till now, India has strictly adhered to the 'No First Use' policy. What happens in future depends on the circumstances," Rajnath Singh told reporters in Pokhran, where he attended the closing ceremony of the army scout master competition in Pokhan.

Epstein's alleged co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell spotted eating lunch at burger joint in Los Angeles

Jeffrey Epstein's former gal pal Ghislaine Maxwell isn't holed up in her British manor or summering on the Massachusetts coast.

The Post found the socialite hiding in plain sight in the least likely place imaginable โ€” a fast-food joint in Los Angeles.

Maxwell, 57, the alleged madam to the multimillionaire pedophile, was scarfing down a burger, fries and shake al fresco at an In-N-Out Burger on Monday while reading The Book of Honor: The Secret Lives and Deaths of CIA Operatives, a nonfiction best seller by journalist Ted Gup.

Sitting alone with a pet pooch, she was surprised to be found and told an onlooker, "Well, I guess this is the last time I'll be eating here!"

Maxwell, accused in court papers of providing sex slaves for Epstein and engaging in threesomes with the financier and underage girls, had not been photographed in public since 2016.

Comment: She certainly doesn't seem perturbed by official announcements of further investigations into Epstein's schemes.

Best of the Web: Fakest fake news of the week: 'Jeffery Epstein definitely killed himself', sez NY Chief Medical Examiner

fake news
Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide by hanging himself in his jail cell, the New York medical examiner said Friday.

Epstein, 66, was found in his cell in Manhattan federal lockup Saturday morning and transferred to a nearby hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead. His autopsy was performed Sunday, NBC News reported, citing two law enforcement officials.

Epstein was remanded to jail pending trial on charges of sex trafficking of minors and sex trafficking conspiracy, which were lodged by federal prosecutors in Manhattan last month. He was accused of abusing dozens of underage girls in his mansions in New York and Palm Beach, Florida, between 2002 and 2005.

Comment: Dead men tell no tales.

The network he was part of is safe to continue preying on children.

George Galloway holds forth:

More mysteries surround Epstein's last days. The New York Post reports:
Jeffrey Epstein spent at least two hours locked up alone with a mystery woman โ€” possibly part of his legal team โ€” just a day after he was taken off suicide watch at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, according to a new report.

A visiting attorney, who asked that his name not be used, told Forbes Thursday that he saw the young woman with Epstein on July 30, when the disgraced financier was transferred into the facility's Special Housing Unit.

"The optics were startling," the attorney told the outlet. "Because she was young. And pretty."

He speculated that the woman could be a lawyer โ€” as the multimillionaire paid members of his legal team to visit him for nearly eight hours a day, so he could avoid his cell and sit in a room designated for attorney meetings, NBC News reported last week.

The visiting attorney told Forbes that when he visited that day, Epstein's main lawyer, Reid Weingarten, wasn't there โ€” and neither were any of his other known attorneys. It was only the mystery woman.

"If I was him, I would have hired ... an old bald guy," the lawyer said.

The woman didn't seem to be carrying any files and was dressed casually โ€” leading the attorney to believe that she was a first-year associate, according to the report.

"It was slacks and a blouse. ... Could have been jeans or another kind of pants," he told Forbes. "But, like, Sunday brunch attire."

"I think she was there just to babysit him, and keep him out of his cell, and just keep him company for eight hours a day," he added. "Which is not supposed to be the way it works."

Beeley: UK urges 'stronger protections for Syrian Christians' while supporting terrorists that kill them

Womenfighters
© Vanessa BeeleyThe women fighters in the National Defence Forces of Al Sqeilbiyyeh - a Syrian Christian town at the border with Idlib.
Recently, the Syrian Arab Army swept to victory against terrorists in a number of northern Hama villages. Christian towns bordering areas of Hama and Idlib formerly controlled by Al Qaeda affiliates can breathe again.

In this article I will specifically address the persecution of Syrian Christians by the extremist, sectarian groups who have been promoted, financed and armed by governments in the West, in particular the UK. I would like to make the strong point that Syrians fiercely defend their secular and diverse culture, that their faith or sect is secondary to their Syrian identity and patriotism.

I have focused on the fate of Christian minorities in Syria because of the recent hypocritical claims by members of the British government - their desire to "protect" the "most persecuted religious group in modern times" as Christians globally were described by former UK foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt, in the run-up to the leadership battle for the Conservative party, when Hunt traded campaign punches with eventual winner, Boris Johnson, whose election led to Hunt's resignation.

In one statement prior to his leadership bid, Hunt said, "There is nothing more medieval than to despise someone on the basis of their faith." Former British Ambassador to Syria Peter Ford gave me his response to this statement:
"Nothing more medieval? 'Medieval' is a good word to describe the ideology of these armed groups as they single out Christian villages on the edges of Idlib for merciless shelling. There must be a special place in Hell for hypocrites like Hunt and Johnson who feign concern for Christians while supporting vile jihadi groups in Syria."

Media report: Secret Israel-UAE talks convinced Tel Aviv to commit to US-led Gulf coalition - the plan all along

Last week, Israeli media reported that Foreign Minister Israel Katz had met with an unnamed "high ranking persona" from the United Arab Emirates to discuss the "Iranian threat," with Tel Aviv committing to provide intelligence and unspecified other forms of assistance to the US-led 'maritime security coalition' being formed in the Persian Gulf.

The State Department was responsible for arranging at least two secret meetings between senior Israeli and Emirati officials to share information and 'coordinate efforts' against the alleged Iranian threat, anonymous US officials said to be familiar with the interactions have told The Wall Street Journal.

The meetings were apparently arranged by senior State Department official Brian Hook, who serves as senior policy advisor to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and President Trump's special representative for Iran.

US crimes against Venezuela amount to economic terrorism

It was an internationally significant event worthy of widespread coverage but my hunch is few, if any, of you reading this column will have heard of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit which took place in Caracas, Venezuela, on July 20/21st.

The weekend ministerial meeting brought together 120 member nations as well as seven observer countries, ten multilateral international organisations including the United Nations (UN), and fourteen specially invited nations.

The elected President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, addressed the opening session and outlined the broad and honourable aim of NAM, a voluntary international bloc of countries second in size only to the United Nations. Referring to the desire to end US global domination, unwanted interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations and rejection of intolerable wars and armed conflicts Maduro said:
"The construction of a world without hegemonic empires, a world of peace, of respect for international law, is neither an odyssey nor an unrealistic utopia..."

Israel refuses US Congress members Omar and Tlaib visits

Democratic lawmakers will be turned back due to 'suspected provocations and promotion of BDS,' unconfirmed TV report says.

Israel has decided to bar US congresswomen Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib from entering the country, following fierce debates on the matter in the Prime Minister's Office, Channel 12 reported on Thursday. The unconfirmed report, which did not cite a source, said the final decision was being drafted and passed around for revisions before the move is publicly announced.

The reason cited for the move is reportedly "suspected provocations and promotion of BDS," a reference to the anti-Israel boycott movement.

Meanwhile an unnamed government official told AFP that was "a possibility that Israel will not allow the visit in its current proposed format." The official said "Professional teams and legal counsel in various government ministries are continuing to examine the decision. According to Israeli law, the authority lies with the minister of the interior."

The official, however, added that "if Congresswoman Tlaib makes a humanitarian request to visit her family, the decision on her matter will be considered favourably."
