Hailstones the size of tennis balls caused chaos in what is believed to be Myanmar as they crashed into houses and trees, while frightened residents sought shelter from the bad weather in their homes.

The terrifying barrage was captured on video by a panicked resident.

At first, a few hailstones are seen hitting the ground here and there, but as the storm picks up, they get heavier as scared onlookers start to shout in the background.

At one point, the video zooms in to show the severity of the resulting damage. The hailstones are so big that many bounce off the ground, leaving huge holes in the soil. Thudding noises are heard as they smash into homes nearby.

Houses lost their roofs and in some cases walls

At least 25 homes were damaged or destroyed Sunday when a mini-tornado swept through a neighborhood in the southern part of the city of Chihuahua.

Six people were reported to have suffered minor injuries after the storm struck Vistas de Cerro Grande, lifting the roofs off houses and in some cases knocking down walls.

Video footage of the event shows laminate roof panels flying in all directions. One of the injured was a young girl who was cut by flying glass.

It was a phenomenon that Chihuahua Governor César Duarte described as rare and blamed climate change while touring the damage yesterday.

"The weather is showing us phenomena that we've never seen before in these latitudes . . . ."

He said there was no doubt that the tornado was a protest by nature "against the climate changes were are living through."

Four elephants, including two calves, were killed by lightning in northern Sri Lanka in one of the worst wildlife tragedies to hit the country in years, officials said Sunday.

A female elephant, aged about 25 years, and two of her calves, aged 10 months and two years, and an eight-year-old female were found dead Sunday just outside the Wilpattu wildlife sanctuary, an official said.

"Villagers from neighbouring areas alerted the authorities and we carried out autopsies," wildlife veterinary surgeon Chandana Jayasinghe said. "The deaths were caused by lightning."

Local villagers in Mahavilachchiya, 250 kilometres (156 miles) north of Colombo, had reported heavy rains accompanied by thunder and lightning in the shrub jungle area on Friday when the elephants were thought to have been struck.

It was the worst natural disaster involving elephants since February 2011 when four baby elephants drowned in a major flood in the north-east of the country.
