29 killed in lightning strikes in 24 hours across Bangladesh - 112 such deaths in May so far

lightning
Dozens of Bangladeshis were killed in lightning strikes as pre-monsoon thunderstorms wreaked havoc across the South Asian country, an official said Thursday.

Farmers harvesting rice in open fields made up the majority of victims, Iftekharul Islam, a director at Bangladesh's disaster management department, told AFP.

"In the last 24 hours, 29 people have died from lightning in 12 districts. Almost all of them are farmers," he said.

Scores of people die every year after being struck by lightning during Bangladesh's wet season, which runs from April to October, but officials say the numbers are exceptionally high this year.

Islam said that more than 112 people had been killed in strikes in the first 10 days of May.

Comment: In nearby India on the same day a single bolt killed 4 in West Bengal while a woman was fatally hit in Madurai on Tuesday.

Baseball-sized hail: How severe hailstorms have caused devastation and killed people

The largest hailstone on record, reaching 20 cm across, fell in Vivian, South Dakota, in July 2010.
© NWS Aberdeen. The largest hailstone on record, reaching 20 cm across, fell in Vivian, South Dakota, in July 2010.
To people in Vivian, South Dakota, it must have seemed like a divine rebuke when, in July 2010, a storm pummelled their community with massive hailstones, with the largest specimen reaching 20 cm across, or about 8 inches -- the largest on record.

That's about as long as eight loonies side-by-side. Take a moment to just picture that in your head.

There can be a tendency to underestimate the destructive power of a hailstorm because, for many people, hailstones get no larger than marbles -- a nuisance if you're caught out in them, but not likely to do much of a number on your home or vehicle.

But though underrated compared to more famous thunderstorm impacts such as tornadoes and lightning, people who live in places prone to the strongest thunderstorms know that, if the conditions are right, hail can be large enough to cause catastrophic damage -- and even kill.

At least two dead after devastating 100+ km/h winds blast Ontario and Quebec

Canada windstorm
© Noah Ditkofsky
Half of the country's population was left reeling on Friday as wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h blasted through southern Ontario and southern Quebec, carving a path of destruction along the entirety of the 401 corridor, and leaving at least two dead.

The winds intensified through the afternoon hours, as a rapidly-deepening low pressure system raced into the region, allowing winds from higher than usual in the atmosphere to work their way down to the surface. Known as a 'sting jet' because of the appearance of the associated cloud shape visible on satellite - it looks like a scorpion's tail - these winds are some of the strongest we ever see with storms across North America, aside from those in tornadoes and hurricanes. And they certainly lived up to their stinging moniker on Friday.

At least two fatalities have been reported in the wake of the storm. One person was killed and another hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a tree fell on two tree removal contractors at 20 Side Road and Fourth Line in the Milton/Halton Hills area.

"One suffered catastrophic injuries at the scene, and was pronounced there," Halton Police Staff Sgt. Jeff Foster told The Weather Network. "The second has been transported to Hamilton General Hospital with life-threatening injuries after the fire department extricated him from the tree that was pinning them down."

Comment: Last month another powerful windstorm left thousands without power in Ontario.
