Deadly Cyclone Roanu will bring a major flood risk to northeastern India and Bangladesh as it slams onshore during the first half of the weekend.

The first tropical cyclone of the season in the Bay of Bengal will make landfall in Bangladesh, near or just north of Chittagong, on Saturday.

The cyclone will continue to graze India's northern Odisha and West Bengal coasts into Friday night. Rain will generally total 50-100 mm (2-4 inches) with locally higher amounts, triggering some incidents of flooding.

As the cyclonic storm traverses the Bay of Bengal from the Indian coast to Bangladesh, it is expected to gain strength and become a Severe Cyclonic Storm with maximum sustained winds of 90-115 km/h (55-70 mph).

Lightning bolt kills couple in Andhra Pradesh, India

Two people died in a lightning strike at Chayapuram village in Vajrakarur mandal of the Anantapur district on Wednesday night.

The deceased, a couple - Kadirappa (65) and Lakshmi Devi (55) - were sleeping in their thatched hut in the village which witnessed rain under the influence of the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal accompanied by lightning.

The couple was found dead on Thursday by the villagers.

Pregnant woman and son killed by lightning bolt in West Khasi Hills, India

A pregnant woman, her unborn child and her five year old son died in Mawkohroit locality of Mawliehbah village in West Khasi Hills on Tuesday night after they were struck by lightning.

The deceased have been identified as Ritalis Kharbani (24), a seven month unborn baby in her womb and her five year old son Nestarlan Kharbani.

Eye witnesses informed pressmen on Wednesday that the incident occurred on Tuesday at around 7:45 PM. The victim's husband was yet to return home from his daily labour.

"I was shocked when I heard the lightning strike near my home but I had no idea that the lightning had struck my daughter and my grandson," said a grieving Regina Kharbani, mother of Ritalis Kharbani, while speaking to The Shillong Times on Wednesday.

She added that when she came out of her house, she saw that her daughter's house was engulfed in a huge and roaring inferno.

Three separate lightning strikes killed three people in Pursat and Siem Reap provinces yesterday afternoon, as well as one dog and one chicken, according to police.

Four others were injured in the strikes, which took place in Bakan and Kravanh districts.

A Bakan district police officer who requested anonymity said a 66-year-old man named Seung was killed by a lightning strike in a stable in Talo commune's Praha village.

"The lightning struck a man while he was in a cow stable. We could not bring him to the hospital because he was killed instantly by the lightning," the officer said.

Elsewhere, deputy police Lorng Channa reported a deadly lightning strike in Kravanh district.

Two sugarcane farm laborers were killed while five others were hurt after they were hit by lightning at Hacienda Porter, Barangay Bonifacio, Cadiz City, in Negros Occidental, past 10 a.m. on Thursday.

According to Cadiz City Vice Mayor Samson Mirhan, the farm workers were harvesting sugarcane when they noticed thick clouds in the sky.

Thinking that it would rain, the farm workers took shelter inside a hut when lightning struck, killing two persons and wounding five others.

Killed were Willy Montaya Barredo, 38, and Jovie Lubrico Humawan, 27, of nearby Hacienda Elvira also in Barangay Bonifacio.

Three members of a rhino family have been killed by a lightning strike at an Indian national park.

A 27-year-old female, a 14-year-old calf and a baby rhino were found dead after they were struck by a bolt that 'shook the ground' for miles, officials said.

The family had been living in the reserved forest in Gorumara National Park in India's West Bengal state for more than a decade.

Uma Rani, Jalpaiguri district's forest officer, said: 'The deaths were caused by lightning. It was an unprecedented accident.

'Some other animals have also died and we are checking the forests.'

Three killed by lightning strikes in Thailand and Cambodia; 30 dead for the latter in first 5 months of 2016

Two Cambodians working on a farm in Thailand's Rayong province were killed by lightning on Monday.

A border communications officer, who asked to remain anonymous, said the victims were a mother and a son from Battambang province.

Their bodies were sent to Cambodia yesterday via border checkpoint 400, to be handed over to their relatives for a funeral. Their names were not immediately available.

Separately, 64-year-old farmer Hoern Plorng was struck down while cutting bamboo during a storm in O'Chrou district in Banteay Meanchey yesterday, according to district police chief Ee Cheng Sokha.

National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM) spokesman Keo Vy said yesterday that Plorng's death was the 30th lightning fatality in Cambodia since the start of the year.

According to a May 17 NCDM report, lightning this year has killed 30 and injured 35 people, compared to 18 deaths and seven injuries in the first five months of 2015.

Two people were killed and six others critically injured when lightning struck them in Tripura on Wednesday, police said.

Basana Debbarma, 42, and Bipul Debbarma, 38, were killed at Champahour in western Tripura. A police official said the victims were in a paddy field when the lightning hit them.

Rains accompanied by high velocity winds and lightning lashed Tripura on Wednesday, damaging crops and uprooting electric poles and trees.
