Vietnam - Thousands displaced by further floods after Storm Sonca dumps 549mm (21 inches) of rain in 24 hours

Further flooding has affected central provinces of Vietnam after heavy rainfall brought by Tropical Storm Sonca. Around 25,000 homes have been flooded and over 14,000 people displaced.

Tropical Storm Sonca made landfall in Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam, early 15 October and then tracked westward across the country as the storm dumped heavy rainfall.

According to figures from Vietnam's National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF), in a 24 hour period to 15 October Khe Tre in Thua Thien Hue Province recorded 549 mm; Ta Long in Quang Tri Province 397 mm; A Bung in Quang Tri Province 340 mm; Suoi Da in Da Nang Province 301 mm; and Lam Thuy Quang Binh Province 286 mm.

At least one person has died in Mexico after heavy rainfall brought by the remnants of Tropical Storm Karl.

Tropical Storm Karl weakened into a tropical depression late 14 October 2022 as it moved towards Tabasco state in the Gulf of Mexico and into the neighbouring state of Chiapas.

The heaviest of the rain fell in Tabasco and Chiapas states. According to provisional figures from Mexico's meteorological agency Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) Río de Janeiro in the municipality of Pichucalco in Chiapas recorded 342.4 mm of rain in 24 hours to 15 October. Camoapa in Tabasco recorded 387.9 mm of rain during the same period. Areas of Oaxaca (Cosolapa 84.7 mm) and Veracruz (Chicomapa 77.1 m) also saw some heavy rain during this period.

Horrendous footage has been shared online of the moment a tree was struck by lightning during a football match, leading to a referee being rushed to hospital.

The shocking video, shared across social media, shows a lightning bolt coming down and striking the tree near the ref of a match in Bago City, Philippines. In the video, shrieks can be heard as people watched on in horror while the referee was electrocuted before the video abruptly ends.

A 50-year-old man died and an unspecified number of people were missing as thunderstorms lashed several parts of Crete on Friday and Saturday, turning roads into rivers and closing Iraklio's international airport, state-run news agency AMNA reported.

The incident occurred in the coastal town of Agia Pelagia, in Malevizio municipality, about 25 kilometers west of Iraklio, which the rapid change in the weather has caused severe flooding in the last few hours.

Local media report that more people may be missing in Agia Pelagia and in the neighboring town of Lygaria, where firefighters rescued a woman from a vehicle that ended up in the sea.

Heavy rain over the last few days has caused flooding and landslides in parts of Central Vietnam where at least 1 person has died and 2 were reported missing. Some parts of Thua Thien Hue Province recorded more than 850 mm of rain in a 24 hour period.

One person died in flood waters in Nui Thanh District, Quang Nam Province, on 10 October 2022. Meanwhile one person was reported missing in floods in Tam Kỳ, the capital city of Quảng Nam Province, where around 1,500 homes were flooded.

Areas of Quang Ngai Province have also seen heavy rainfall, in particular the districts of Son Ha and Tra Bong. One person was reported missing after a landslide at a hydropower plant in Tra Bong District late on 11 October. Around 1,000 families have been evacuated due to flood threats in the districts of Nghia Hanh, Binh Son and Duc Pho.

They were working instead of taking shelter during rain, police say

A lightning strike killed five workers of a brick kiln in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur on Tuesday.

The deceased are Abdul Jalil, Nazmul Islam, Siam, Shahadat and Rashedul.

Pirganj police station OC Abdul Aual confirmed the matter.

According to the police, lightning struck five brick kiln workers at around 3:30pm, killing four of them on the spot, while another injured worker died on the way to the hospital.

The OC said the five had been working instead of taking shelter during rain.

Central America - Fatalities reported after Hurricane Julia brings flooding rains

Hurricane Julia swept past the Colombian islands of San Andrés and Providencia before making landfall as a Category 1 Hurricane near Laguna de Perlas, Nicaragua on 09 October 2022. The storm then weakened as it moved across Central America.

Julia brought torrential rain to areas of Central America, triggering floods and landslides in northern Colombia, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Panama. As of 10 October, over 20 fatalities were reported and thousands of people were displaced.

A trough of low pressure in the region was forecast to bring further heavy rainfall, the National Hurricane Center said.

Heavy rain said to be associated with Hurricane Julia had previously caused flooding in Trinidad and Venezuela.

Lightning strike kills 2, injures four in Nigeria

The people of Ndegwu in Owerri West LGA of Imo State have been thrown into shock and mourning following the horrendous lightning that struck and allegedly killed two persons and injured four others on Monday evening during heavy rainfall.

The victims, Mr.Emeka Gerald Mbah, a 39-year-old from Umuejekaubi Umuahum Ndegwu, and his friend, Mr.Chigbumkpa Ernest Odionyenma, 36-year-old from Umuadi Umuogwuta in Ndegwu Community, died instantly when the thunder struck during heavy rain at about 5 pm.

Mr. Stanley Opara, an eyewitness, told our correspondent that the deceased were both married with kids and until their sudden demise were members of the Assemblies of God Church at Ndegwu.

He said the two victims and four others were hired to work as laborers at a building site in Umuogwuta village in Ndegwu when lightning suddenly enveloped the community with the accompanying thunder.
