A downpour in Budapest triggered flash floods in the Hungarian capital, triggering power failures, while extreme weather elsewhere further damaged the country's already weakened agricultural industry.

Firefighters rescued stranded passengers from cars and helped pump water from flooded basements and subway stations across the city on Monday evening, the Emergency Services agency said in a statement on its website. No injuries were reported. Some people were evacuated from their homes.

The storm dumped more than 80 millimeters (3 inches) of rain in the span of an hour on Monday evening, more than the monthly average of 55 millimeters to 60 millimeters for August, the National Weather Service said on its website.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Myanmar have confirmed that the death toll of the flood disaster now stands at 103.

Heavy monsoon rainfall, combined with rain brought in the wake of Cyclone Komen, resulted in widespread flooding during early August 2015, affecting all but a few regions or states of the country.

More heavy rain has fallen since then, and river levels are still high, posing a risk for communities living along river banks. WMO report that Kyaukpyu in Rakhine State saw 86.9 mm of rain in 24 hours to 17 August 2015.

OCHA figures also say that 1,152,490 people have been critically affected by the floods, which have left 15,239 houses destroyed.

During a meeting on relief and resettlement for flood victims of 14 August 2015, United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar, Ms. Renata Dessallien said that a precise picture of the flood damage is yet to be determined.

"We know that the impact of the heavy rains, floods and landslides are extensive but we are yet to fully determine the extent. Immediate needs are nation-wide with a particular focus on the hardest hit areas of Chin, Magway, Sagaing and Rakhine. But we also know that the flood waters have moved south and evacuations have occurred in Bago and Ayeyarwaddy."

Record rainfall causes flooding in Melborne, Florida

Image
© Tim Shortt/Florida TodayCars parked across from Melbourne High near Percepta and Old School Pizza, were affected by record rainfall Thursday afternoon and flooding.
An afternoon deluge in Melbourne shattered rainfall records and brought particular headaches to employees of a Babcock Street office building when they discovered their parked cars underwater.

In about 45 minutes, the previous daily rainfall record of 1.48 inches was eclipsed. By 4 p.m., 2.26 inches had come down, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne. More is likely today.

Employees at Percepta, a customer service center on South Babcock Street in Melbourne, emerged to find their parking lot flooded.

Josephine Miller said her car, along with five others she saw, had standing water in them.

"It rains and the parking lot floods every once in a while," said Miller. "Nothing like we've seen today, though."

A shopping centre is evacuated, firefighters are called to a home struck by lightning and roads across the South are flooded.

Torrential rain and thunderstorms are lashing the UK - with parts of southern England enduring more rain in nine hours than the average for the whole of August.

The Met Office has issued 13 flood alerts - eight in southern and central England and five in Scotland - as the downpours are expected to continue into Friday.

One of the worst-affected areas on Thursday was Eastbourne, where 60mm of rainfall was reported by the afternoon.

Cars dragged down street after severe flash flood hits Colorado Springs; 2 inches of rain in 45 minutes

Dragged downstream: The floods were so strong that they uplifted parked cars and dragged the vehicles down the street
Dramatic video shows the awe-inspiring moment four parked cars were uplifted by a raging flash flood that overtook a residential street in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Severe thunderstorms in central Colorado caused nearly two inches of rain and hail to fall in just a 45-minute time span, Monday afternoon, and the sudden influx of water caused rivers to overflow and run off course.

One of these impromptu springs popped up in a neighborhood in Colorado Springs, where residents didn't even have enough time to move their cars by the time their block was overtaken by water.

In a video shared with Fox 31 Denver, a resident tapes the scene outside their home where several cars are uplifted and dragged down the street by the strong current.

A blue car even crashes into another larger SUV, no doubt causing serious damage to both vehicles.

Similar videos were taken in nearby Manitou Springs, where the flash floods led to the emergency evacuation of the Alpine Autism Center.

Five missing after flash flood in Morocco

Flash flood in Morocco
Five people have gone missing after torrential rain hit Morocco's central region of Azilal, the authorities said.

"Three women and two little girls were reported missing Monday following the floods... caused by torrential rain and storm winds," official news agency MAP quoted the authorities as saying.

The victims had been inside one of three houses swept away by a flash flood in a valley known as Wadi Alfet.

Residents and authorities are still looking for missing persons.

Flash floods are common in Morocco's valleys, and storms have hit several locations around the country in recent days, in some cases causing material damage.

The country witnessed record rain levels twice in 2014. Some areas, including southern coastal city Agadir, recorded more than a year's worth of rain in just 10 days.

The heavy downpour killed some 50 people and affected thousands of others in the regions of Agadir, Guelmin and Ouarzazate.

Argentina's 2015-16 wheat crop threatened by flooding

Image
Floods in several of Argentina's key wheat-growing areas threaten to damage recently planted crops and could reduce the 2015-16 harvest, crop and weather experts said on Tuesday.

A series of storms, some dumping as much as 200 millimeters (four inches) of water, have lashed wheat fields in southern Santa Fe and northeast Buenos Aires provinces.

"All crops in this area are at risk due to excess moisture," said Germán Heinzenknecht, meteorologist with the Applied Climatology consultancy

"We are in a part of the year when it is not so easy to get rid of that water once it is on the ground. It is not going to evaporate quickly," Heinzenknecht added.

The government forecasts the 2015-16 wheat planting area at 11.9 million acres, but has warned that the heavy rains could yet reduce that forecast. Argentina is a major wheat exporter to neighbouring Brazil.
