Heavy rainfall triggers floods in eastern China

Heavy rain has triggered floods in parts of eastern China. Disaster authorities report that 6,351 people have been relocated and a total of 228,000 affected in Jiangxi Province.

Severe weather has been affecting the province since last week. Jiangxi province activated a state of emergency on 05 July. Since then further heavy rain has fallen in the province. According to China's National Meteorological Center, 225.6mm of rain fell in Guangchang in 24 hours to 07 July. Lichuan, also in Jiangxi Province, recorded 169.5mm during the same period.

Chinese news agency Xinhua, quoting Jiangxi Province flood control headquarters, said that a total of 14,900 hectares of cropland have been affected with 900 hectares destroyed. The floods also destroyed 34 houses. Direct economic losses are estimated at around US$45 million.

Search and rescue teams have recovered the bodies of eight tourists who were killed by a flash flood as they explored the Lima canyon in Parras, Coahuila, on Tuesday.

State Civil Protection chief Francisco Martínez Ávalos said that strong rains Tuesday afternoon provoked a sudden flood in an area that seconds previously would have been dry. It swept away and drowned the tourists who were traveling in a van and an ATV.

The state Attorney General's Office said searchers had recovered the bodies of a 65-year-old man, a woman and four young boys and girls aged 14 to 19 after they were discovered yesterday by a teenager riding his horse through the canyon and another man.

At least six people were killed and 19 others went missing after a dam in India's Maharashtra's coastal Konkan region breached following incessant rain leading to flood-like situation in downstream villages, officials said today.

A district official said that the Tiware dam in Ratnagiri district developed a breach early today following heavy rain, our New Delhi correspondent reports.

A local police officer said six bodies have been recovered so far while 19 people are still missing.

The dam breach caused a flood-like situation in seven downstream villages and a of dozen houses have been swept away by gushing waters.

Heavy rain has caused at least 18 deaths and triggered massive rail, road and air transport disruptions in India's financial capital Mumbai.

The victims died when a wall collapsed on them in the early hours of Tuesday after persistent rainfall for two days.

Authorities have declared a public holiday on Tuesday and have requested people to stay indoors.

Met department officials have confirmed that this is the heaviest rainfall in the city for a decade.

Heavy rain from a seasonal rain front has continued to lash southern Kyushu in southwestern Japan and other areas, killing one person and sparking evacuation advisories for over 1.2 million people and triggering at least one landslide.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has warned of heavy rain in eastern Japan on July 1 and in western Japan through July 4, with a possibility of localized downpours and thunderstorms. The agency is calling for people to be on their guard against landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, lightning and other extreme weather.

By 9 a.m., evacuation advisories were in place for more than 1.21 million people in 558,715 households in 21 municipalities in the three southwestern Japan prefectures of Kagoshima, Miyazaki and Kumamoto. The advisory for the city of Kagoshima covered almost the entire municipality.

In the town of Honjo in Kagoshima Prefecture, a hillside gave way, resulting in a landslide that hit the home of a 78-year-old woman. She was rescued by her husband and neighbors and admitted to hospital, but later died.

Seven people have died in floods that have devastated the Russian Siberian region of Irkutsk. The water also drove several thousand people from their homes.

"According to the latest data, seven people fell victim to the flood. Nine are missing, a child is among them," TASS news agency reported on Monday, quoting a source at the regional emergency services. Some 153 more people have been injured and are currently in hospital, with over 600 more seeking medical help.

Severe flooding has been caused by torrential rains that hit the region last week. Water levels of some rivers quickly rose to more than two meters. A state of emergency was declared with about 3,300 homes in 55 settlements flooded and nearly 10 thousand people affected so far, according to Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Up to 30,000 people were cut off from electricity supplies. The floodwater also damaged roads and limited traffic on part of the federal highway.

Torrential rains have been hammering the heartland of America for months, and at this point vast stretches of farmland in the middle of the country are nothing but mud. As a result of the endless rain and unprecedented flooding that we have witnessed, millions of acres of farmland will have nothing planted on them at all in 2019, and that is a major national crisis. But most farmers were able to get seeds planted in the deplorable conditions, and now they are desperately hoping that something will actually grow. Unfortunately, on farm after farm what is coming out of the ground looks absolutely terrible. Even if we get ideal weather conditions for the rest of the summer, there is no way that many of these fields will be ready before the first hard frost arrives. As you will see below, the truth is that we are potentially facing the most widespread crop failures in all of U.S. history.
