The world's ageing dams are not built for ever more extreme weather

The town of Whaley Bridge in the UK has had to be evacuated after damage to a dam built in 1831. The Toddbrook Reservoir is just one of many ageing dams worldwide not designed for ever more extreme rainfall as the planet warms.

Dams are typically designed to cope with a so-called 1-in-100-year flood event. But as the world warms the odds of extreme rainfall are changing, meaning the risk of failure is far greater. Engineers have been warning for years that many old dams around the world are already unsafe and need upgrading or dismantling.

"The 1-in-100-year event is perhaps happening every five years," says Roderick Smith at Imperial College London. "I'm absolutely convinced that it is due to climate change."

What is happening at Toddbrook Reservoir, where 1500 people have had to evacuate, is very similar to what happened at the Oroville Dam in California in February 2017. Both are earthen dams where excess water flows over the top of the dam and down a concrete-lined spillway.

If this concrete is damaged, the water flowing down the spillway can rapidly erode the earth underneath, and there is a risk of the entire dam wall collapsing.

More than 10 inches of rain brings flooding in eastern Kansas, with threat of more

signs
Several rounds of overnight thunderstorms inundated parts of eastern Kansas with heavy rains early Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka.

Ten inches of rain or more fell along a line that stretched from southern Jefferson County through Douglas County, Franklin County and into Anderson County, weather radar indicated.

The National Weather Service in Topeka issued a flash flood warning for those counties, saying radar and rain gauges indicated that the storms have dumped as much as 10 inches of rain across the area.

Flash flooding was already occurring and an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain was possible.

Vadodara and other cities of Gujarat have received torrential rain causing water-logging in various areas. Pictures and videos circulating online show the scary state caused by the rain. One rather terrifying video shared online shows a crocodile swimming near a residential area and attacking a dog.

The video posted on Twitter shows two dogs standing in water next to a building. People inside the building can be seen holding ropes probably trying to help the dogs out of the water. Seconds into the video a crocodile can be seen swimming towards them. At one point, it reaches extremely close to one of the dogs and even attacks it. The dog, luckily, manages to get away.

Take a look at the video that captures the incident and also how flood affected the city:

At least 1 person is missing and over 150 have been evacuated after heavy rain triggered landslides, floods and debris flows in south-western Norway on 30 July, 2019.

The municipalities of Jølster and Førde in Sogn og Fjordane county were the worst affected. Norway's weather warning service, Varom, said that 33mm of rain fell in 1 hour in Vassenden in Jølster and 92mm of rain fell in 1 day in Botnen in Førde. Varom said it is likely rainfall totals were even higher in the mountains in this area.

Major cities from Philadelphia to New York City to Boston found themselves flooded on Wednesday evening thanks to a series of thunderstorms that rolled through the Northeast.

In Natick, Massachusetts, a pregnant mother and her 3-year-old son were trapped in their car when the vehicle stalled.

"I saw a few other cars going, so I just thought 'I'm next,' but then it almost felt like a boat as I was floating," the mother, identified as Michelle Lopes said. "I'm eight months pregnant, so I just thought I would sit and wait."

Elsewhere in Natick, trains were halted by flooding on tracks.

The strongest winds were reported at Boston Logan International Airport, where a microburst with 74-mph gusts wrecked travel plans, and in Winthrop, Massachusetts, where a South Boston yacht club was rocked.

Thousands of people are being evacuated from a town because part of a reservoir wall has collapsed in floods.

Engineers are pumping water from the 300-million-gallon Toddbrook Reservoir amid fears it could burst and swamp Whaley Bridge in Derbyshire.

Police have told the town's 6,500 residents to gather at a school, taking pets and medication with them.

A severe flood warning, which means a threat to life, has been issued for the River Goyt, below the reservoir.

A second wave of floods is affecting Russia's Irkutsk region. The recent flooding began around 27 July, 2019 and comes after 25 people died and 7 are still missing from the first wave of floods that began in late June.

According to the Russian Emergencies Ministry, 2,699 people in 8 districts of the Irkutsk region have been affected by the new wave of floods that started after heavy rains in the area.

Russian news agency TASS said that the water level in the Iya river in the region reached 11.25 metres on 31 July, which is well above the 7 metre danger mark.

A month's worth of rain in 4 hours brings flash flooding to Yorkshire Dales, UK

A bridge has collapsed as flash flooding hit part of North Yorkshire after almost a month's rain fell in four hours.

The region is braced for more rainfall as the Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain across much of the north of England.

Some roads remain shut and rail passengers faced disruption after a landslip between Carlisle and Skipton.

Comment: This comes on the heels of a heatwave followed by snow and hail in some parts, and, earlier in the year, unseasonably dry and warm conditions which led to wildfires across the UK:

At least 34 people killed by floods across Pakistan

flood
At least 34 people, including children, were killed in separate incidents after incessant rains caused flash floods and lashed various parts of Pakistan, officials said on Tuesday.

The torrential rains and thunderstorms in southern Sindh province killed at least 18 people on Monday, mostly from electrocution, as the first spell of monsoon rain wreaked havoc in Karachi, exposing its redundant civic structure, including electricity and sewerage systems.

Major parts of Pakistan's biggest city remained without power till late Monday night. The two districts in the city, central and east, were worst affected.

The Pakistan Metrological Department has warned off more heavy rains in the next 24 hours although the rains have stopped in Karachi since Tuesday morning.
