At least 132 people have been killed in floods and landslides caused by unusually heavy rainfall in Kenya.

Around 17,000 were displaced and 11,000 livestock swept away by strong waters, government's spokesman Cyrus Oguna said. More than half of the country has been affected, according to Oguna.

The rains have helped alleviate the drought conditions across the country that caused a food shortage and added to inflationary pressures, but have damaged infrastructure and farmland. Authorities are assessing the extent of destruction as they plan repairs, according to Oguna.

The rains are above the average amounts recorded in past years, with some areas receiving as much as three their historical average, Kenya Meteorological Department Deputy Director Bernard Chanzu said by phone. The rains are expected to continue through December.

2 kids dead, 1 missing after truck swept away in Arizona flood

arizona floods
The bodies of two children were found Saturday, but searchers were still looking for a third child who went missing after a truck they were in was swept away while attempting to cross a runoff-swollen Arizona creek in what a sheriff's official called a "horrible and tragic incident."

Gila County sheriff's Lt. Virgil Dodd said the first body found was of a 5-year-old boy. The second child's age and gender weren't provided in a statement released by the Sheriff's Office.

Dodd said the 5-year-old boy's body was found about 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) downstream of the crossing which had been closed hours before the truck tried to cross Friday despite barricades and warning signs.

Drivers "really need to not ignore that. It's very dangerous. It's very hazardous," Dodd said in announcing the first death. "In this case, this horrible and tragic incident ... that's what happens when you ignore these types of signs."

The Sheriff's Office said emergency personnel and law enforcement helicopters on Friday rescued two adults and two children who also were in the military-style truck swept downstream in Tonto Creek near the small community of Tonto Basin, which is about 52 miles (83 kilometers) northeast of Phoenix.

November flooding in UK 'a once-in-60-years weather event'

Heavy rainfall which brought
parts of the country to its knees earlier his month - and killed at least one person - was a "once-in-60-years" weather event, experts have said.

The deluge, described by residents in the worst-hit parts of Yorkshire as "almost biblical", resulted in a slew of Environment Agency flood warnings as homes were evacuated, forcing the Government to call a Cobra emergency meeting to deal with the crisis.

Researchers with the Centre for Hydrology and Ecology (CEH) said the 3.1in (77.8mm) of rainfall during a 24-hour period over November 7-8 in Doncaster, which was one of the places badly affected by flooding, was likely to happen only once every 60 years.

Experts found the River Don, which burst its banks, set a new peak flow record.

Elsewhere, flooding around the River Derwent exceeded notable weather events in the last 20 years, the CEH said.
