Flash flood strikes again in Ankara, Turkey - 2nd such event in 2 weeks

A mass clean up operation is underway after heavy rainfall caused parts of Ankara to flood. Roads turned into rivers as rain came down on the Turkish capital city.

Dramatic footage showed people standing on top of their vehicles waiting for help. The flood waters damaged local shops causing severe damage.

Firefighters have been helping the operation to save people stuck in the floods and clean up the city.

By this time of year, boats are usually plying the ice-free Ob, but in 2018, while the winter covering the river has begun to move like a giant monster - but it has not cleared.

Far from it.

Here the thick ice is slowly drifting downstream in a northerly direction towards the Arctic yet with temperatures still of an unseasonal -5C, this could go on a while.

A series of summertime storms once again brought the city of New Orleans to its knees as flooded streets brought the evening commute to a screeching halt.

Up to four and a half inches of rain fell over parts of the city in as little as an hour and a half, clogging catch basins and causing flooding in areas that were also hard hit last August.

Mayor Latoya Cantrell lifted the parking restrictions on the neutral grounds across the city and encouraged citizens to get their cars to higher ground.

Rare cyclone in Gulf of Aden brings flooding to Yemen, Somalia, Djibouti

Tropical Cyclone Sagar is making a rare journey into the western Gulf of Aden between the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa, and is expected to unleash dangerous flash flooding in parts of Yemen, Somalia and Djibouti into the weekend.

Tropical Depression 1A was named Sagar by the Indian Meteorological Department, the agency with primary responsibility for tropical cyclone forecasting in the North Indian Ocean, including the Arabian Sea. Locally, it is known as Cyclonic Storm Sagar.

As of Friday evening, local time (Yemen is 7 hours ahead of U.S. EDT), Sagar is a small, compact tropical cyclone with winds estimated at tropical storm force, according to both the Indian Meteorological Department and the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

At least one elderly woman was killed near Aden, Yemen when her house caught on fire caused by Sagar, according to the Associated Press.

Entire Washington DC area under flood watch through Saturday morning

Heavy rain is exacerbating conditions around the region, especially in already-waterlogged Frederick County, Maryland, which remains under a flood warning. An additional 2 - 5 inches of rain are possible through Saturday.

After days of heavy rain, the entire D.C. region now has a concern greater than big puddles and wet commutes.

The region is under a flood watch through 8 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

And in already-waterlogged Frederick County, Maryland, a flood warning remains in effect through Sunday evening.

Tens of thousands ordered to evacuate after floods at Colombia's Hidroituango dam

600 people already left homeless after heavy floods at hydroelectric dam project, with another wave of flooding feared


Tens of thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate their homes in western Colombia after heavy floods at Colombia's largest hydroelectric dam project, which had already displaced hundreds over the weekend.

The Hidroituango dam on the river Cauca was in the final stages of construction when a blocked tunnel was cleared on Saturday night, causing flooding downstream that swept through a riverside hamlet. Six hundred people were left homeless and two bridges, two schools and a health centre were destroyed.

On Wednesday, authorities issued evacuation orders for eight municipalities downstream from the dam amid fears of another wave of flooding as heavy rains continue to batter the megaproject.

At least 34 dead after flash floods hit 11 provinces of Afghanistan

At least 34 people have died and 4 injured in flash floods in Afghanistan over the last 7 days.

The Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) reported that the flooding had affected 11 provinces. Around 600 animals have died, 240 houses destroyed and 624 houses damaged. Around 80 hectares of agricultural land was also severely damaged.

The affected provinces include Samangan, Takhar, Kapisa, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Badghis, Ghor, Panjshir, Sari Pul, Ghazni and Parwan provinces.

ANDMA says it will carry out damage assessments in order to assist affect communities. So far relief supplies have been distributed to affected families in Parwan and Sari Pul.

Floods cause landslide at hydroelectric plant, destroy buildings, bridges, and force evacuations in Colombia

The Ituango plant became at risk on April 28 after an "unpredictable geological condition" that caused a massive landslide, covering up the waters below.

The rising level of the Cauca river, in the north-eastern province of Antoquia, has forced at least 600 people to leave their homes on Sunday, as the hydroelectric plant Ituango created a situation of emergency, reported Medellin's Public Companies or EPM.

Flood warning issued for inland Northwest US lakes and rivers due to excessive snow melt

The National Weather Service in Spokane has issued a flood warning for numerous lakes and rivers in Eastern Washington and North Idaho.

The Weather Service says rising temperatures this week will increase snowmelt and runoff.

Minor flooding is occurring on the Similkameen River near Nighthawk, and major flooding is forecast for later in the week.

Days of heavy rainfall cause deadly floods in Guangxi, China

Flooding caused by days of heavy rain in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has left at least 3 people dead and 2 missing, local media report.

According to Chinese news agency Xinhua, the area has seen rain since Monday 07 May, 2018.

Since then over 70,000 people in 15 counties have been affected, with 6,100 people evacuated. Power supply has been interrupted and around 4,500 hectares of crops have suffered damage. Local media say the floods have caused direct economic losses of over 14.3 million USD.

Video footage showed images of flood water racing through streets in Yulin city and Bobai and Luchuan counties. Firefighters were called on to carry out flood rescues in Yulin city and Luchuan county.
