A Gwynedd farmer making his afternoon rounds was shocked to come across three cattle killed in a lightning strike. All three had been sheltering under a tree as a "frightening" thunderstorm hit the area on Sunday.

Medwyn Evans, 41, said the Welsh Black heifers were bloated and, when found, had their eyes open. "Being black, I couldn't tell if they had any marks on their bodies," he said. "But their eyes were wide open, as if they had just been struck by a bolt of lightning."

A vet from the farm's practice in Dolgellau was called to the scene and a lightning strike was confirmed as the most likely cause of death. Three other Welsh Black heifers sheltering under the same tree walked away unharmed.

Over 70 head of sheep and goats died when lightning struck a remote Rajgundha village, 90 km from Palampur, last night.

Reports said a shepherd and his flock of sheep and goats were on their way to high hills in the Dhauladhars. Because of inclement weather, he was resting under a tree near the village.

Suddenly, lightning stuck the tree, killing 70 animals on the spot. However, he and his two companions had a narrow escape.

SDM, Baijnath, Salem Aazam received the report this afternoon. He sent a team of rescue workers to Rajgundha to help the victims. He also sanctioned financial assistance to the family of the victim.

Body of minke whale spotted near Montreal recovered from river - 2nd in a month

dead
A dead whale found in the St. Lawrence River northeast of Montreal is likely the second of two minke whales spotted in the area earlier this month.

A Quebec marine mammal research group says the whale was recovered Friday from the waters near Contrecoeur, Que., about 50 kilometres downstream from Montreal.

A post to the Quebec Marine Mammal Emergency Response Network's website says the male whale, about 3.8 metres long and believed to be one to two years old, was transported to St-Hyacinthe for a necropsy.

The group says the state of the animal suggests it had died between a few days and a week earlier and its skin was covered with a fungi similar to that found on a humpback whale who died after a stay in Montreal in 2020, indicative of a prolonged stay in freshwater.

30 dead dolphins found along northwestern Mexican beach

dead
At least 30 common short-beaked dolphins were found dead in the Gulf of California, or the Sea of Cortez, off the coast of Mexico's northwestern Baja California Sur state, authorities reported Thursday.

After the report, environmental authorities and other civil organizations dispatched representatives to the site, north of the state capital of La Paz, where the members of the Delphinus capensis species - the most common dolphin in the world - were found dead on both Wednesday and Thursday.

Officials with the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa), in coordination with the Network for Attention to Marine Mammal Beachings for the Coast of Baja California Sur, tallied the number of dolphins found dead along the beaches and ended up removing several other dead individuals that were floating near the coast.

In addition, they took biological samples from the bodies for analysis to determine the cause of death.

Denali National Park is still melting out from its snowiest winter season in 99 years of record keeping. The unusually heavy, lingering snow is affecting park wildlife.

Summer operations resumed on May 20, but park public affairs officer Sharon Stiteler says conditions along the Park Road are lagging behind the calendar.

"It definitely looks like winter when you're out at about mile 10 and you're looking into the tundra. I mean, it's still very snow-covered," she said.

The Park Service headquarters got 176 inches of snow this winter, besting the 1970-71 record of nearly 174 inches. As of May 15, there were still 33 inches of snow on the ground at Park headquarters — by far the most on record so late in the season.
