Massive ash cloud from wildfires engulfs southern Paraguay
Smoke blown from fires in drought-striken Argentina shrouds Asunción and surrounding regions in dangerous haze

A massive, fast-moving cloud of ash hundreds of metres tall and several kilometres wide has swept over southern Paraguay, as storms blew debris from wildfires raging in neighbouring Argentina following two years of severe drought.

The colossal bank of smog enveloped Asunción, Paraguay's capital, late on Monday, shrouding the city and its suburbs in a thick, grey haze with the aroma of burnt vegetation.

Forecasters warned residents to stay inside to avoid breathing in the smoky miasma.

In the southern district of Ayolas, where fires have been blazing since early January, conditions were so dark that birds went up into the trees to roost, thinking it was night, said Ray Mendoza, a volunteer firefighter.

Though they left winter behind, sporadic snowfall still threatens to disrupt daily life in most provinces across Turkey. The Turkish State Meteorological Services (TSMS) warned on Thursday that 63 provinces were exposed to heavy snowfall, rain and strong winds. Also on Thursday, schools were shut down in five provinces including Afyon, Denizli and Isparta in the west, Sinop in the north, the central province of Konya, as well as a town in the otherwise warm Muğla in the southwest.

Snowfall also shut down several roads, including one connecting Konya to Afyon and Isparta where the traffic came to a halt due to blizzards. The western province of Burdur also saw two roads connecting it to Antalya and the capital Ankara shut down due to snowfall on Wednesday night.

According to a forecast by TSMS, snowfall, rainfall and cloudy weather will prevail in most regions of the country, while the majority of the country's western and Mediterranean regions will be spared from bad weather. The country's most populated city Istanbul, which was exposed to snowfall chaos in January, also had sporadic snowfall on higher ground but except for low temperatures, weather was otherwise not as wintry as it was in the past two months.

A ripped up road could cost millions to repair after mysterious underground movements left it so warped it looks like it had been hit by an earthquake.

A section of the B4069 near Lyneham in Wiltshire has been so badly damaged the tarmac has completely snapped or is at a 45 degree angle.

Wiltshire Council say the road has been closed since February 17 - but some drivers are still trying to use it according to police.

The earthquake-like damage has been caused by unexplained underground movements which will now be investigated.
