Japanese ski area closes chairlift because it snowed too much with over 700 inches for the season so far

Having to close down a chairlift because it snowed too much is a good problem to have. I wish we had that problem here in Utah right now.

A photo posted to Facebook by Myoko Snowsports captures this 'good problem,' showing a Japanese chairlift completely buried in powder in the Myoko Kogen region. Myoko Snowsports didn't specify which ski area or which chairlift it was exactly that got this much snow, but the post's caption claims that this chairlift won't be able to run for the rest of this season.

Japan's Myoko Kogen region has received over 700-inches of snowfall this season so far.

Up to a foot of snow blanketed parts of Northern Arizona Wednesday, snarling traffic and delaying schools.

Most of Flagstaff received 9 inches of snow by midday and other areas reported more than a foot, according to the National Weather Service in Bellemont. The heaviest snow was expected throughout Wednesday morning and afternoon at elevations above 4,000 feet, with those over 5,000 feet receiving "significant accumulations."

The combination of heavy snow and blowing winds led to low visibility and dangerous driving conditions on local highways and roads. Flagstaff Police Department had responded to more than 10 snow-related crashes by 11 a.m., according to spokesman Sgt. Odis Brockman.

"People need to stay home if they don't absolutely have to be somewhere," Brockman said.

NWS echoed the warning, adding that the snow was falling at a rate of up to 2 inches per hour. The Coconino County Sheriff's Office reported no serious snow-related incidents.

Snow-clearing accidents killed 45 people in the three months through January, emergency authorities said Thursday, as Japan's snowy regions have been hit by heavier falls than usual this winter.

Many of the victims in 10 prefectures including Aomori died after being buried by snow falling from the roofs of their homes, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said.

Aomori Prefecture in northeastern Japan saw the largest number of deaths at 11, followed by Hokkaido in the country's north at 10. Akita, Fukushima and Yamagata prefectures in the northeast recorded three deaths each.

In Hokkaido, areas facing the Sea of Japan have seen heavier snow than usual this season, according to a local observatory.

Michiganders in the Upper Peninsula used shovels, plows and tractors to dig themselves out on Wednesday after some areas received more than 30 inches of snow during a record-breaking storm that began on Sunday evening and ended late Tuesday. Yoopers took to social media to share pictures of doorways and windows completely blocked by snow.

Ronnie Jackson, of Painesdale, about 100 miles northwest of Marquette, says he had to hire a tractor to dig a path to his home so that his fiancé could go to work and he could take his dog outside.

4-year-old boy dies after pit bull attack in Baytown, Texas

PIT BULL ATTACK
A 4-year-old boy from Texas died after he was mauled by several dogs that neighbors say belong to his family members.

Police responded to a call for a dog fight around 7:40 a.m. Wednesday in Baytown, Texas. Upon arrival, officers found a 4-year-old boy had been attacked by dogs. Neighbors say the four dogs involved are pit bulls.

Witness Yahir Martinez had just arrived at his boss' house next door when he heard screams.

"The kid was in the dog's mouth... Those dogs are meant to bite and lock their jaw. That's what pit bulls do... Once that happens, it's difficult for you to get them to open their jaw," he said.

Storm floods streets, drags cars and people are rescued in Umuarama, Brazil

FLOOD
A storm in the late afternoon of Tuesday (22) relieved the heat and drought, but brought inconvenience to Umuarama. Approximately 40 minutes were enough to flood streets, drag vehicles with people, and cause flooding of shops and houses.

Until the publication of this report, the Fire Department carried out a survey of occurrences and damages to update the Civil Defense. The military corporation is also distributing tarpaulins to families whose homes have been damaged.

The water rose in the lower regions of the city, where flooding peculiarly occurs, as is the case in the surroundings and proximities of Bosque Xetás, Jardim Panorama, Avenida Parigot de Souza with Guanabara, Avenida Liberdade, Pernambuco, Brazil, São Paulo and Rua Piauí. In some of these points, cars were dragged along and water entered businesses. No serious injuries were reported.

Cyclone Emnati overnight lashed the island nation of Madagascar, still reeling from the impact of another cyclone earlier this month, local authorities said Wednesday.

The cyclone "made landfall around 2300 GMT just north of the southeastern district of Manakara," Faly Aritiana Fabien, a senior official of the National Risk Management Office (BNGRC) told AFP. No casualties have been reported yet.

The storm, which passed just north of Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius and Reunion, had weakened slightly by the time it reached the eastern coast of Madagascar, but was still packing winds of around 100 kilometres (60 miles) per hour and gusts of 140 km/h, according to Meteo-France.

Large numbers of marine animals have been found washed up on Welsh beaches following the storms that have battered the UK over the past week.

In recent days, 13 dead seals, dolphins and porpoises have been found washed up on west Wales beaches after struggling to cope with strong swells and huge waves.

All the animals were reported to Marine Environmental Monitoring (MEM), a group run by Matt Westfield with veterinary support from London Zoo.

North Wales Live reported that the group has collected common dolphin carcasses from Ynyslas, Ceredigion, and Aberdesach, Gwynedd after visiting a number of sites, from Pembrokeshire to Anglesey.

Post-mortem examinations are due to be carried out on the animals this afternoon (Tues, Feb 22) by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL).

The two dolphins recovered by MEM showed few signs of injury but had varying degrees of scavenger damage. One dolphin was recovered from Ynyslas beach on Thursday after storm Dudley, while the second was found on Aberdesach beach and was reported to MEM last Friday.
