UK's "wind drought" has turbine generation down 40% - And the high pressure system is sticking around

uk wind turbine
New figures compiled by Imperial College London's Rod Gross revealed July's wind output was down by 40 percent so far compared with the same period last year.

He said: "We've been typically doing between two to three gigawatts of wind [generation].

"At a windier time of the year we might be doing nine or 10."

The unusual stillness in the air is the result of a sustained period of high, dense pressure over the UK, according to the Met Office.

A Met Office spokesman said: "It's like a lid, it keeps everything still.

"From the forecast looking out over the next couple of weeks, there doesn't seem to be any significant change on the way."

A National Grid spokesman said: "Between June 4 and July 15 wind generation was around 30 per cent lower compared to the same period last year.

"Electricity demand is low and we're comfortable with the level of spare generation we have available.

Comment: Electricity demand was 'low' and yet demand for natural gas increased! And one of the cheapest and most reliable suppliers is Russia, whom the UK has spent the last couple of years smearing with nonsensical lies.

Comment: In light of a recent study showing global wind speeds have been decreasing since 1960, meanwhile extreme winter storms and wave heights have been increasing over the last 70 years, one wonders whether this will become a repeating pattern and what other changes may accompany it. And if it does become a repeating pattern those supporting unreliable renewables, as evidenced elsewhere, will sorely regret their ignorance.

No tsunami warning issued, says National Weather Service

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck to the south of the Alaska peninsula early on Thursday, but the National Weather Service said no tsunami warning has been issued.

The quake was centred about 100 kilometres south-southwest of Sand Point, Alaska, at a depth of 17 kilometres according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

"No tsunami warning, advisory, watch or threat," said officials from the National Weather Service, a unit of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Unusual: 6 tremors in 4 weeks strike London Gatwick, UK

Gatwick airport earthquake
This graph shows the same two stations recorded a quake at 2.33pm with a magnitude of 2
Parts of South East England were rocked by two earthquakes in ten hours today as the area faces a 'swarm' of tremors.

The first quake to hit Newdigate, near Dorking, Surrey, was recorded at 4.49am with a magnitude of 1.7, before the second one came at 2.33pm with a magnitude of 2.

It comes a fortnight after a magnitude 3 quake was recorded locally, with six quakes now observed in just a month in the area around London Gatwick Airport.

Special monitoring equipment was installed only a few days ago at Horse Hill in Horley to better understand what is happening beneath the surface of the area.

'Child of Krakatau' volcano stirs to life in the Pacific

Anak Krakatau
© Watts Up with ThatAnak Krakatau has rumbled back to life in recent weeks, spitting flaming rocks and ash from its crater.
From the "this can't be good" department and AFP:

An Indonesian volcano known as the "child" of the legendary Krakatoa erupted on Thursday, spewing a plume of ash high into the sky as molten lava streamed down from its summit.

No one lives on Krakatau, which forms a small island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, but the peak is a popular tourist spot.

Indonesia's geological agency has not raised the alert level for the mountain. However, there is a one kilometre no-go zone around its summit.

Confirmed sightings of True's beaked whales have only been made three times previously in the North Atlantic.

Science's understanding of beaked whales has mostly been made from the stranding of dead animals.

But this group of the whales - estimated at being 16 foot (five metres) long - were spotted breaching the waters off the coast off Santander earlier this month.

Flood death toll rises to 32 in Gujarat, India

The flood situation worsened in Saurashtra and South Gujarat regions on Wednesday as rain continued to pound the districts of Junagadh, Jamnagar, Gir Somnath and Dangs.

State Revenue Minister Kaushik Patel said the death toll during the ongoing monsoon season has reached 32 in the State. Junagadh, Gir Somnath and Dangs districts were worst hit as a large number of villages in these districts were submerged as rivers started overflowing.

Compensation

"Compensation for deaths is being provided and already ₹56 lakh assistance for 14 deaths has been released. Incessant rains over the past week has caused damage to crops and property. The assessment of damage will be conducted once the water recedes from the flooded regions," Patel stated. In view of the flood situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has cancelled his visit, which was scheduled for July 20.
