Indonesia earthquake death toll could reach 5,000 as officials count missing

The official death toll is 1,944 but this number could triple as authorities lose hope of finding survivors

About 5,000 people are still missing, feared death, after an earthquake and tsunami hit Sulawesi just over a week ago.

The official death toll stands at 1,944 but officials believe that when casualties from two of the hardest-hit areas of Palu - Balaroa and Petobo - are determined, that number could almost triple.

Those searching the ruins of the villages fear that thousands may have been swallowed up by the ground when the earthquake caused liquefaction, causing the solid surface of the ground to turn to liquid, engulfing homes in the mud.

"Based on reports from the heads of Balaroa and Petobo, there are about 5,000 people who have not been found," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia's disaster agency.

"Nevertheless, officials there are still trying to confirm this and are gathering data. It is not easy to obtain the exact number of those trapped by landslides, or liquefaction, or mud."

Hopes of finding survivors ten days after the double disaster struck the Indonesian island have all but faded, but Thursday will be the official deadline for recovering bodies. After that people will be deemed missing, presumed dead.

Officials are warning residents along Florida's gulf coast to prepare for a possibly "life-threatening hurricane", which is due to strike later this week.

Hurricane Michael may reach category three strength before it arrives in Florida, possibly on Wednesday, and will then move up the US East Coast.

Michael, which is the 13th named storm of the season, is already lashing Cuba with strong winds and heavy rains.

Officials in areas hit by Hurricane Florence warn of damage from the rains.

North Carolina may receive 1 to 3in (2 to 7cm) of rain, officials say, which could trigger flash flooding due to the existing level of saturation in the ground from Hurricane Florence, which struck North and South Carolina last month.

Early cold snap and snow impacts crops in North Dakota

snow crops
The first week of October was a wintry one, and it seems the second week may be pretty similar.

That could have an impact on some crops that have yet to be harvested.

Agronomist at the NDSU research extension center, Eric Eriksmoen, said corn and sunflowers have a little bit more protection being higher off the ground.

Corn will flop down and the husks prevent moisture from entering the cob, but harvest could be delayed since they need warmer temperatures and more sunlight to dry up.

Sunflowers were able to freeze over early last week, but the moisture and lack of sunlight could also delay that harvest.

Collier County has deployed a contractor to clean up the large numbers of dead fish that are appearing in the Moorings Bay area, but this fish kill may not be the work of red tide.

City of Naples officials say that the current fish kill could be the result of a bloom of the Cylindrotheca diatom, which can cause fish to die due to low dissolved oxygen waters.
