Question

Best of the Web: Does gender exist?

Much of the discussion around "gender" rests on the assumption that sex and gender are two different things. Sex, so the theory goes, is about genitals, chromosomes, and so on. Gender, so the theory continues, is about social roles and identity.

The problem is: this idea is very new. In the English language, until very recently, "sex" and "gender" have been used interchangeably. (And before the 1950s, "gender" wasn't used at all.) So why two words for the same thing? What's this all about?

Here's what seems to have happened: the word "gender" has always been a specific term used in linguistics to denote the grammatical gender of nouns and other words, as in the Latin genus. This may seem confusing to English speakers, but in most languages, certainly in all Romance, Semitic, and most Germanic languages (but also in Russian, and in different forms in Japanese, Mandarin, etc.), there is such a thing as a masculine, feminine, and in some cases neuter form for nouns, and even verbs and adjectives. In English, all that's left of this are the pronouns.

Critics in Melbourne found an image of Russian and Ukrainian soldiers hugging to be offensive.

An Australian street artist has been pressured into painting over his own mural, which depicted a Russian and a Ukrainian soldier hugging each other. Kiev's ambassador to Australia called the image "utterly offensive" and accused the author of creating "false equivalency between the victim and the aggressor."

Artist Peter Seaton, who goes by the nickname CTO, covered his work called 'Peace before Pieces' on Kings Way in Melbourne just days after finishing it. He did so on Sunday night after an intense campaign by pro-Kiev activists, who accused him of ignorance.

Best of the Web: The most inhuman weapon of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is not HIMARS, but pills

Ukrainian soldiers
Ukrainian soldiers ride through a street in Pokrovsk, Donetsk region, on July 8.
Russian military correspondents report amazing things about the mental attacks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the attack on Kherson. In particular, on the Snigirevsky sector of the front, during another sortie from Kiselevka in the direction of Blagodatny, independent soldiers repeatedly rose to their full height without artillery cover, stupidly attacked from forest plantations across the bare steppe. Naturally, they were met with well-aimed fire, after which the surviving defenders of the Independence rolled back.

"This is how the attack on Kherson east of Nikolaev has been looking like for the third day already... Reinforcements arrive, equipment accumulates and goes on a suicide raid again... no one on the Russian side understands the meaning of such suicide attacks," you can read on Russian telegram channels.

Comment: The evidence of such practice in Ukraine is anecdotal so far. It was, however, confirmed to be widespread among NATO-Saudi terrorist forces in Syria. See also:

German energy suppliers warn of lower output as low river levels limit shipment of coal

Declining water levels on the Rhine River due to a drought in Europe have left German power producers warning of lower output amid coal supply snags, Bloomberg reports.

Shallower water in key river passageways means it's harder for barges to make as many coal shipments, which threatens the ability of power plants to build up stockpiles ahead of winter.

German utility companies EnBW AG and Trianel GmbH each reported supply issues, with the former warning of a cut in power generation, according to Bloomberg.

European coal futures for 2023 climbed 2.2% Friday to $320 a ton — more than triple what it was in January.

Conservatives react to Biden calling them a 'threat' to the nation: 'I go to work...pay my taxes and don't break the law'

Conservatives on social media reacted to President Joe Biden's recent divisive political speech, in which he referred to "MAGA Republicans" as a "threat" to "the very soul of this nation," by sarcastically explaining how they are threats to the nation as well.

Twitter responses:
"I go to work. I work hard. I go to the gym. I hunt. I fish. I spend time with friends and family. I pay my taxes and don't break the law. I play disc golf. I am a threat to the very soul of this nation," one Twitter user wrote.

"I'm a registered nurse nearing retirement," another explained. "I like taking walks and reading mystery novels. I adopted a baby and she's now an engineering student with a scholarship. I pay my taxes. I don't break the law. I am a threat to the very soul of this nation."

"I work hard, garden, cook, bake, spin, knit weave and throw pots. I've been married 33 years and have two grown kids. I've owned businesses and pay taxes. I am a threat to the very soul of this nation," a third said.

"I'm paying for both of my kids' college. I am a threat to the very soul of this nation," another Twitter user quipped.

"I'm retired LE. I own my home. I believe in God. I believe life begins at conception. I enjoy the outdoors, going to the gym and riding my road bicycle. I also teach people to use firearms safely and responsibly. I am a threat to the very soul of the nation," another proclaimed.

"I'm a mom, I take care of my sick mother, who can't live on her own. I love my dogs and I cook 'real food' for them twice a day, everyday. I just bought my first house, and I love to decorate and bake goodies for my neighbors. I am a threat to the very soul of this nation," another echoed.

Comment: Biden is fulfilling his mission. Someone wrote this speech and it was approved.

The public face of vaccine supremacy

Bowser

Specific lies and certain public policy stances remain diabolically harmful in a world that increasingly suffers from universal deceit. Often such lies retain their potency in the face of contrary evidence. It has been more than nine months since the Brownstone Institute published a report on 53 studies from the United States, Israel, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere showing that the then exploding COVID infection rate correlated with vaccination rates. These studies raise the question of whether the vaccinated are putting the unvaccinated at risk.

Since the Brownstone study was published, first, the United State Supreme Court invalidated the Biden administration's vaccine mandate for businesses. Second, the Danish government issued a policy declaring that it is no longer possible for young people to get vaccinated, citing the low risk posed by the virus. Third, results of a national test released on August 31, 2022, show that U.S. elementary school students' math and reading scores plummeted to the lowest level in decades amid the school shutdowns implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shutdowns erased two decades of educational progress. For instance, in math, the gap between ethnic groups widened as "Black students lost 13 points, compared with five points among white students, widening the gap between the two groups." More likely than not, the data would confirm the similarly devastating effects of school shutdowns on adolescent students.

Taken as a whole, the evidence shows that vaccines have doubtful efficacy, children face a very low risk of COVID infection, and educational shutdowns hamper learning and childhood development for elementary students. Notwithstanding the data, Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington D.C., has issued an edict that would bar nearly two-thirds of Black adolescents from attending school despite the educational and social consequences -- ensuring that few people are capable of outhustling her on COVID fearmongering. Equally plain, she appears oblivious to the fact that her policy would unduly burden a racial demographic already facing severe education challenges. Indeed, Mayor Bowser refused to provide alternatives for students denied an in-school education.

Comment: False premises and headstrong authoritarianism are a bad combination, a detriment of unmeasurable consequences predicated on the whims of one public official.

Israeli rules say West Bank visitors must declare love interest

Foreigners must tell the Israeli defence ministry if they fall in love with a Palestinian in the occupied West Bank, according to new rules. If they marry, they will be required to leave after 27 months for a cooling-off period of at least half a year. It is part of a tightening of rules on foreigners living in, or wanting to visit, the West Bank. Palestinians and Israeli NGOs have accused Israel of "taking restrictions to a new level".

The new rules are due to come into force on Monday. The regulations laid out in a lengthy document include a demand on foreigners to inform the Israeli authorities within 30 days of starting a relationship with a Palestinian ID holder.

New restrictions on Palestinian universities include a quota for 150 student visas and 100 foreign lecturers, while there are no such limits in Israeli ones.

Businesspeople and aid organisations say they will also be severely affected. The rules set strict limitations on the duration of visas and visa extensions, in many cases preventing people from working or volunteering in the West Bank for longer than a few months.

Comment: The screws of Israeli pathocracy continue to tighten.

Kiev spreading 'propaganda by fear' - French ex-presidential candidate

A former French presidential candidate has accused Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky of using 'war propaganda' as a tool to obstruct the peace process. Veteran politician Segolene Royal also called on the UN and media associations to fight against such tactics.

Royal's suggestion, that some of the "war crimes" Kiev blames on Russian troops were part of 'propaganda,' has made her a target for widespread criticism.

Speaking to BFMTV earlier this week, Royal said that "everyone knows that there is war propaganda by fear."

As an example, she cited the alleged shelling of a maternity hospital in Mariupol - the story which made headlines in Western media in early March. Zelensky blamed Russia for the incident that, as local authorities claimed, killed three people, including a child. The Russian military denied targeting the medical facility and insisted the whole thing was a "completely staged provocation" by the Ukrainian side.
"You can imagine that if there had been any victim, any baby with blood, in the age of cell phones we would have seen [their photos]."
