40 dead after explosion in coalmine in Turkey, dozens still trapped

At least 40 people have died after an apparent methane blast tore through a pit on Turkey's Black Sea coast, with rescuers searching for dozens of coalminers still trapped hundreds of metres underground.

Interior minister, Süleyman Soylu, said Saturday that 40 miners were confirmed dead. Eleven were injured and hospitalised, while 58 others managed to get out of the mine on their own or were rescued unharmed. The status of one remaining miner was unclear.

He also confirmed early reports that almost 50 miners were still trapped in two separate areas between 300 and 350 metres below ground.

Comment: Although coalmine and gas-related explosions aren't exactly rare occurrences, there is reason to suspect that their frequency is increasing, and with a variety of causes to blame, including human error, earth changes, even sabotage, but their occurrence is even more notable at a time when the world is suffering an energy crisis: 10 dead in huge gas station explosion in Donegal, Ireland

Number of non-binary students in Maryland district soars by 582%, data shows

Montgomery County Public School
The largest public school system in Maryland saw a 582% increase in the number of students identifying as non-binary over two years, according to a snapshot of data shared by a district official.

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) provides an intake form to students every year designed to understand and support a student's gender identity. The form asks students for their "identified name," "identified gender" and their preferred pronouns.

Comment: From Not the Bee:
Such a baffling trend we're seeing here.

I mean, it's almost like very young kids are being brainwashed and waylaid by a poisonous ideology that is convincing them they are neither boys nor girls, exploiting their search for identity and desire to be cool by grooming them into a cult. If I didn't know better, that's what I'd think.

Thank goodness there's no ideology like that making its way through our educational institutions! Then we'd be really worried!

The number of "irregular entries" into the bloc has soared, reaching levels not seen since 2016.

The number of irregular crossings into the EU grew sharply in the first nine months of 2022 compared to the previous year, the bloc's border agency Frontex said Thursday.
"In the first nine months of this year, nearly 228,240 irregular entries were detected at the external borders of the European Union, according to preliminary calculations. This represents an increase of 70% compared with the same period last year and is the highest total recorded for the first three quarters of the year since 2016," the agency stated.

The Guardian finally publishes an anti-lockdown op-ed - two and a half years late

bojo
More than two and a half years since Boris Johnson confined the nation to its homes, the Guardian has finally decided it's time to run some criticism of it.

In what I'm sure you'll agree is a timely piece entitled "Boris Johnson's Covid laws took away our rights with flick of a pen. Don't let that happen again" (as though Boris did it without any encouragement from, I don't know, the Labour Party and the Guardian, whose only objections were that he hadn't gone harder and faster) barrister Adam Wagner (who has written a book on the subject, Emergency State: How We Lost Our Liberties in the Pandemic and Why it Matters) sets out the case against the Government's illiberal response to the pandemic.

Alex Jones ordered to pay nearly $1billion to Sandy Hook victims over hoax claims

A jury in Connecticut has ordered conspiracy theorist Alex Jones to pay more than $950 million to the families of eight victims who were killed during the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

For years, Jones had claimed that the shooting was staged and that the families were crisis actors in an effort by the government to confiscate Americans' guns. The latest verdict is the second against Jones, following a ruling from a separate jury in Texas ordered Jones to pay $4.1 million in compensatory damages and $45.2 million in punitive damages, an amount that may soon be reduced due to state laws capping the amount of damages.

The Connecticut trial lasted three weeks and included testimony from the parents of victims and school employees, along with an FBI agent who responded to the shooting, CNN reported. The case itself is a consolidation of three other cases, brought about by various families and the FBI agent.

Russia's ambassador to the US has rebuked the prestigious Stanford University for hosting an event which featured fighters from the controversial Ukrainian Azov Battalion, a unit in which some members openly espouse neo-Nazi ideology.

"It would appear that in its maniacal drive to tarnish and cancel Russia, the US is prepared to glorify Nazism," Anatoly Antonov told the media on Thursday.

On October 1, the university hosted several Azov representatives, including two former POWs recently released by Russia, according to images posted on social media and media reports. Michael McFaul, the former US ambassador to Russia and a vocal critic of Moscow, was also in attendance.

The Stanford Daily, the university's student-run newspaper, claimed that Azov's far-right connections were "historic" and based on online allegations. It also repeated claims by one of the guests, co-founder Giorgi Kuparashvili, that the group's insignia is not derived from the Nazi Wolfsangel symbol but rather spells 'N' and 'I' for "national idea."

Flashback Canada's CTV quietly deleted headline saying vaccinated outnumber unvaxxed in hospitals

CTV News Calgary accidentally disparaged the infallible vaccine in an article published on Friday, leading to the piece being heavily edited.

The article also provided insight from experts, to ensure that if you had any lingering doubts about the efficacy of vaccines, that you're going against the opinions of medical professionals, and are thus wrong.

The original headline, "Vaccinated now outnumber the unvaccinated in Calgary hospitals," apparently left too much room for interpretation and perhaps granted some level of vindication for those who have decided to wait on getting a vaccine, or have decided for their own personal reasons that they won't be receiving one.

The headline has since been updated to "Vaccinated hospital patients outpace the unvaccinated, but it doesn't mean the shots don't work: experts." CTV deleted the tweet with the original article title, which had amassed thousands of engagements.

Climate activists have once again gone to souper extreme lengths to share their message, this time by vandalizing a painting by artist Vincent van Gogh.

A pair of activists from the group Just Stop Oil splattered tomato soup over Van Gogh's painting Sunflowers on display at London's National Gallery. The two women then proceeded to take glue sticks, rub them onto their hands, and place their glued hands on the wall next to the painting, according to a video posted by the group.

"Human creativity and brilliance is on show in this gallery, yet our heritage is being destroyed by our Government's failure to act on the climate and cost of living crisis," a statement from the group read.

'A dumpster fire on top of a hurricane': LA in chaos as racism, corruption scandals mount

The Democratic stronghold of Los Angeles is reeling from scandal and chaos, as federal backroom plotting, federal corruption cases, a mayoral coverup, and allegations of a rigged recount for Soros DA George Gascón have burst into the limelight.

As Politico notes, things are bad.
America's second-largest city was already mired in scandal and chaos. Now, it is reeling from a surreptitiously released recording of City Council members making racist remarks as they schemed to consolidate powera revelation that prompted Democratic leaders from President Joe Biden on down to call on them to resign.

One former council member was sentenced to prison and two others are facing trial. The head of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power pleaded guilty to bribery. Mayor Eric Garcetti's nomination to be the Biden administration's ambassador to India is on hold because of allegations he failed to adequately handle accusations of sexual misconduct by a top aide.
President Biden has now joined a group of officials calling for three LA City Councilors to resign after audio recordings emerged of a "racist" conversation between (now-resigned) president Nury Martinez and the three other local officials — Councilmen Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera.

Comment: For LA Democrats the Party is over.
