North Carolina judge sends juror to jail for refusing to wear mask

Gregory Hahn

A North Carolina man was thrown in the slammer for 24 hours after refusing a lefty judge's order to wear a mask in court - despite no such local mandates in place.

"I never thought I would show up to jury duty and end up behind bars," Gregory Hahn told Fox News' "Tucker Carlson Tonight."

Hahn, a 47-year-old US Navy veteran and single father, was among 98 jury candidates called to Harnett County court Monday who showed up not wearing a mask, WRAL reported.

The courthouse didn't have a mask mandate, but Judge Charles Gilchrist - an appointee of former Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue - ordered everyone in his courtroom to wear one.

When Hahn refused, the judge had him arrested and sent to jail for contempt of court.

The Onion makes a serious point: Police violated Ohio man's rights for mocking them online

anthony novak
© Institute for JusticeAnthony Novak was arrested after creating a parody Facebook page in 2016 to mock his local police department in Parma, Ohio. After being acquitted by a jury, Novak filed dozens of claims against police and the city, alleging violations of the First and Fourth Amendments. U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit sided with the police on the grounds of qualified immunity.
Anthony Novak's case demonstrates how qualified immunity thwarts constitutional rights - in this instance, permitting police to arrest, jail and prosecute a man for making fun of them on social media.

The Onion, the nation's most well-known parody publication, did something this week it has never done before: It filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court.

In a legal filing every bit as persuasive as funny, The Onion used its mastery of parody to urge the court to hear the case of Anthony Novak, an Ohio man arrested and charged with a felony for parodying his local police on Facebook.

Comment: A good sign that a society is circling toward totalitarianism is an intolerance of parody.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is 'bribing' her way to election — with nearly $1 billion of your money

Kathy Hochul new york slush fund election governor
Kathy Hochul gave herself around $1 billion in a slush fund.
Gov. Hochul gave herself nearly $1 billion for a slush fund in this summer's state budget, with no restrictions on what projects or groups she could spend the money on. It allowed her to hand out cash with no review by the Legislature.

Critics claim she has used the enormous amount of taxpayers' cash in an unethical bid to buy votes or control political groups in the forthcoming election against Republican Lee Zeldin.

The governor and her Democratic allies in the Legislature added the $920 million worth of outlays to the $220.5 billion fiscal plan in an 11th-hour move in April that government watchdogs warn is wide open to abuse.

"These slush funds are totally unaccountable. It's not how public dollars should be doled out," senior policy adviser Rachael Fauss of Reinvent Albany said Friday.

Comment: Hochul seems to be proving even worse than her predecessor.

Italy, along with the rest of Europe, is experiencing an energy shock of unprecedented magnitude as electricity prices have almost doubled, according to Davide Tabarelli, president of the Italian energy researcher Nomisma Energia.

"Gas prices were at €0.7-0.8 per cubic meter, but had soared to €1.37 by the beginning of the year," Tabarelli said in an interview with la Repubblica newspaper.

"Now, in October, the €2.3 mark has been crossed: Europe and Italy are experiencing an energy shock of unprecedented scale," the analyst said.

Comment: Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Putin has been warning the EU against its own folly for years.

Best of the Web: Europe's descent into totalitarianism

Laughland
© UnknownJohn Laughland
On 7 October 2022, late in the evening, at around 11.30 pm, I was detained at Gatwick Airport in London by anti-terrorism police. I was not released until shortly before 1 A.M. and my computer was taken from me. It has not yet been returned.

My passport and all my personal belongings - my wallet, my phone, my keys, everything - were removed. I was taken to a room where I was questioned for an hour by two anti-terrorism police officers, acting under powers given to the police (as I learned for the first time) by Schedule 3 of the 2019 Counter-terrorism and Border Security Act.

The Act is supposedly designed to allow the police to detain 'hostile actors' who are traveling to the country to 'plan, prepare or carry out their hostile acts' (according to the leaflet the officers gave me). But the Act itself says:
'An examining officer may exercise the powers under this paragraph whether or not there are grounds for suspecting that a person is or has been engaged in hostile activity'.
So an Act ostensibly designed to allow hostile actors to be stopped in fact applies indiscriminately to everyone, according to its own explicit terms.

Comment: More on the author's background:
John Laughland was the European director of the Eurosceptic think tank (European Foundation) and a fierce opponent of NATO, a director for a Russian-funded think tank in Paris, a regular guest in Moscow and a continuing commentator on RT and Cross Talk - a debate program. He claims the EU is an invention of the CIA to subjugate Europe and promote Nazis to commonplace. Pro-Russian, Laughland says he has never worked directly for the Russian government but is a supporter of the invasion of Ukraine. He speaks fluent Russian and has a Russian wife.
This effectively makes him a member of the political opposition in 'Greater NATO-stan', a 'legitimate target' in the eyes of the Western Controllers, who have spent the last three decades building up their police state precisely for targeting and silencing such political opposition.

BMW to axe UK production of electric Mini and relocate to China

BMW is to axe all UK production of the award-winning electric Mini and relocate it to China, dealing a major blow to hopes that Britain could be a global hub for zero-emission vehicle manufacture.

BMW makes 40,000 electric Minis per year at its Cowley factory on the outskirts of Oxford.

In an article published by the Times on Saturday, it was confirmed that BMW Oxford's production of electric vehicles will end next year as part of plans to reshape the carmaker's lineup from 2024. The move is a further blow to the UK's ambition to become a leader in global electric car manufacturing, following Honda's decision to quit Britain in 2016.

BMW's joint venture with Great Wall Motor means their hatchback and small SUV models will now be made in east China, as will the next generation zero-emission Mini Aceman. A new, electric version of the largest Mini model, the Countryman, will, BMW has confirmed, be manufactured at its plant in Leipzig.

Protests in Athens against soaring cost of living

athens protest
Energy poverty and increases in the prices of basic goods, as well as the need for more structural measures, such as the nationalization of the Public Power Corporation and the abolition of the energy exchange trade, were the reasons and demands of the people who came out to protest in the centre of Athens.

The march was heading towards the EU offices, which it never reached, as the street was blocked by strong riot police forces. At the beginning of the march the Greek police also fired chemicals, despite the fact that there was no provocation and the march was proceeding smoothly. At the height of the Greek Parliament, apart from the riot police forces there was also an aura waiting for the people, which was not put into operation. The march returned to Klathmonos Square from where it started and dispersed quietly.

Comment: As is the case in numerous capitals across much of the West, protests against the soaring cost of living are relatively small, but regular, and ongoing, evidently people are going to need to experience greater suffering before these grow to be significant enough to illicit much of a response from the establishment. And, even then, it's unlikely citizens are going to like what the pathocrats have in mind.

Below is just a small selection of footage from these protest in recent days:

Protest and large fire at Iran's Evin prison, several large explosions and gunshots reported

Evin prison fire

Evin Prison in the Iranian capital Tehran caught fire on Saturday night, with video footage showing smoke and flames rising from the detention center. The blaze broke out amid widespread anti-government protests, which have been ongoing for several weeks.

Videos shared on social media showed the prison compound burning, as an alarm droned and what sounded like gunshots rang out. Several loud explosions were heard as the prison burned.

Iran's IRNA news agency said that the fire broke out following a brawl between inmates and guards, Al Arabiya reported. However, the Iranian government has not yet commented on the incident or released any information on casualties or damage to the facility.

Comment: Iranian state international broadcaster PressTV reports that 'calm has been restored' to the prison:
[...]

The reports said 61 people were injured in the incident. It added that 4 detainees convicted of financial crimes died last night "due to smoke inhalation."

Foreign-backed anti-Iran media outlets had swiftly linked the fire in Tehran's Evin Prison to protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian woman of Kurdish descent, who fainted at a police station after her arrest and died days later at the hospital in the capital last month.

Iranian people in several cities held protests over the issue but some extremist elements derailed the protests and incited violence against security forces, wreaking havoc and setting fire to public properties.

Immediately after Amini's death, Iran's President Ebrahim Raeisi ordered a thorough investigation into the case.

An official report published last Friday said her death had been caused by an illness rather than alleged blows to the head or other vital body organs.

This comes on the heels of another huge fire reported at Ehram park in Tehran.

Ontario's top doctor threatens to bring back mask mandates

Kieran Moore
Ontarians may be forced into wearing masks again this winter if they don't start doing it voluntarily, according to the provinces top doctor.

Ontario medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore said rising Covid case-numbers and lacklustre booster uptake could trigger a turn of the province's mask mandate.

Moore pointed to the lacklustre uptake of Covid-19 booster shots among Ontario's elderly population in particular.

Hospitals caught providing sex change treatments to minors seem to follow the same playbook

Hospitals and medical centers exposed for performing questionable treatments on gender-confused minors, including sex change surgeries and chemical castration, consistently rushed to memory-hole publicly available information on their websites.

While reporters and investigators may not have much trouble re-locating these pages through internet archives, the general public will have a harder time. Thus, hospitals that cover their tracks by deleting information they were once ostensibly proud to share may very well succeed in deflecting criticism of their policies.

"It's telling that several children's hospitals have tried to cover their tracks when their ghoulish surgery on minors is exposed," Jay Richards, a research fellow at the Heritage Foundation told the Daily Caller. "What is bizarre, however, is that the exposure is not the result of some hidden camera operation. In virtually every case, it is their own online videos and ad copy that is getting held up to scrutiny, usually by online critics such as Libs of Tik Tok. And the criticism often amounts to little more than showing people what these hospitals say they're doing in their own advertisements."

Vanderbilt University Medical Center's trans clinic provides children "trans buddies" who monitor doctors who "misgender" patients, a fact they openly discuss on their website. After reports, the center initially entirely removed its trans clinic from its website, but later restored the site after the media firestorm had subsided. Matt Walsh's report also showed that the center was committed to providing hormones to children as young as 13. Explicit mention of this fact is, as of this writing, removed from Vanderbilt's website, but can be viewed through an archived version of the page.

Vanderbilt University refused multiple requests from the Daily Caller for explanation of these actions.
