'More than 280,000 dead': Estimate of Ukraine's military losses calculated using published obituaries

ukraine dead
Judging by the obituaries published in open sources, in a year and a half of the war against Russia, the irretrievable losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine exceeded three hundred thousand people.

Ruslan Tatarinov, the author of the telegram channel "Whisper of the Front", said this on the air of radio "Komsomolskaya Pravda", the correspondent of "PolitNavigator" reports.

He noted that since June 1, 2022, he has been counting the dead of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

"I have many relatives and friends in Ukraine who live in different regions. And one of my relatives attended the funeral of seven servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in one day. Naturally, I became interested, and began to look for it all, "Tatarinov said.

Comment: More conservative estimates of at least 200,000 dead have been made by Western commentators, such as Colonel Douglas Macgregor, but, whatever the precise figure is, it's most telling that a casualty rate approaching this magnitude is frequently left out (if not almost completely absent) in Western media reports.

When it is acknowledged by Western media, the number of data is often muddled together, and/or credence is given to US estimates which significantly over inflate Russia's losses and massively underestimate Ukrainian casualties - although, notably, we still come close to the above note number of dead, it's just distributed wrongly - as can be seen in Reuters April 2023 headline and report:
Ukraine war, already with up to 354,000 casualties, likely to last past 2023 - U.S. documents

[...]

According to an assessment collated by the U.S. Defence Intelligence Agency, Russia has suffered 189,500-223,000 total casualties, including 35,500-43,000 killed in action and 154,000-180,000 wounded.

Ukraine has suffered 124,500-131,000 total casualties, including 15,500-17,500 killed in action and 109,000-113,500 wounded in action, according to the document entitled "Russia/Ukraine - Assessed Combat Sustainability and Attrition."

The figures are around 10 times bigger than any public casualty figures published by either Moscow or Kyiv.

The conflict is also providing ideal cover for the most sinister industries: Illegal organ market is a lucrative business in war-torn Ukraine

Best of the Web: What is Wrong with the University?

John Henry Newman
© John Everett Millais, 1881/WikipediaTheologian John Henry Newman, was an English theologian, academic, intellectual, philosopher, polymath, historian, writer, scholar and poet, first as an Anglican priest and later as a Catholic priest and cardinal.
Consider corporations like the BBC, the NHS, Google, Amazon, Biontech. No one worries about them. It would not be the end of the world if they were to wither away. But there are several corporate institutions which we do worry about. The state is one. The church is another. Perhaps the third great one is the university.

Even though schools are ancient, and universities are medieval, we only began worrying about the university in the 19th Century. This is when the church began to wane and the state began to wax in the eye of the university. The most famous writer in England about the university was Cardinal Newman. He gave a series of lectures in the 19th Century published under the title of The Idea of a University. Newman was a worrier. He worried about the state. Then he worried about the church. Finally he worried about the university.

Newman's argument, in short, was that the university had become a superimposition of several ideas: one was religious, one was what he called liberal and one was utilitarian. A few years ago I wrote an academic article explaining that the university is a composite entity: a superimposition of an 'eternal' institution, an 'immortal' institution and an 'immediate' institution. Fancy words: but I wanted to make Newman's conceptions clearer than I think they have been to even those people influenced by his 'idea' - all those Leavises and Scrutons. The university is built on three contradictory ideas:

Comment: No doubt the average university worker bee will view the above prescriptions as elitist, when in reality, Dr. Alexander is pleading for a return to the standards that produced intellectual advances from the Renaissance to the earliest of the 20th century. The decline in true paradigm breakthroughs, as opposed to flashy technological developments, is an argument for his thesis.

Security in Niger took a turn for the worse Sunday, as protesters marched through the capital in support of the recent military coup, the French embassy was attacked, and a regional economic bloc raised the possibility of military intervention if the president was not reinstated within a week.

Thousands of junta supporters surged through the streets of Niamey, the capital, waving Russian flags, chanting the name of the Russian president and forcefully denouncing former colonial power France.

The protesters marched through the city to the French Embassy, where a door was lit on fire, according to someone who was at the embassy when it happened and videos seen by The AP. Black smoke could be seen rising from across the city. The Nigerien army broke up the crowd.

Russian mercenary group Wagner is already operating in neighboring Mali, and Russian President Vladimir Putin would like to expand his country's influence in the region. However, it is unclear yet whether the new junta leaders will move toward Moscow or stick with Niger's Western partners.

On Sunday at an emergency meeting in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, the West African ECOWAS bloc said it was suspending relations with Niger and authorized the use of force if the president was not reinstated within a week.

DeSantis-backed board ends Disney district's DEI and race-based programs: 'illegal' and 'unAmerican'

The Florida district that governs the iconic Walt Disney World theme park and resort announced Tuesday it is abolishing all of its diversity, equity and inclusion programs and race-based hiring practices.

Glenton Gilzean, director of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District - a unique governing body that dictates economic, tax and other policies for the nearly 25,000-acre theme park - said the change is a reversal of the Disney-appointed Reedy Creek Improvement District polices.

"The so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives were advanced during the tenure of the previous board and they were illegal and simply unAmerican," said Gilzean.

"Our district will no longer participate in any attempt to divide us by race or advance the notion that we are not created equal," he said.

Comment: Disney apparently finds some wiggle room. Newsweek reports:
[W]hen speaking with Newsweek, a source familiar with the situation in Florida said the DEI program is specific to the district but not Disney.

Legal Political Analyst Andrew Lieb told Newsweek: "
To be clear, the Affirmative Action decision did not require the abolition of DEI, but it did signal that race cannot be a factor, whatsoever, in employment decisions whether in hiring, promotion, or otherwise, which likely occurred in the District prior to this ablution and which likely will result in lawsuits for reverse discrimination. That said, the District's abolition of all DEI appears to only concern its government workers, and does not reach private businesses within the District."
Michael McAuliffe, a former federal prosecutor and elected state attorney in Florida, told Newsweek:
"The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District's pronouncement that it has summarily ended all DEI initiatives within its jurisdiction appears to be a mixture of political posturing and legal implementation. The District's use of aggressive, punitive language about the prior DEI programs seems to give away some of the District's goals in making the change."

"Disney, like many other companies in America, likely is revamping its DEI initiatives to identify ways to promote a productive and vibrant workforce without running afoul of the newly announced prohibition on race as an explicit remedial factor in its business decisions."
When contacted, DeSantis' office directed Newsweek to the press release from Gilzean, which read: "The so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives were advanced during the tenure of the previous board and they were illegal and simply unAmerican."
In other words, Disney will twist the new rules to continue its old practices. The only real way to get a change is to hit them in the wallet.

San Francisco, California • July 28, 2023
Elon Musk's X Corp, the parent company of the website formerly known as Twitter, filed a lawsuit Monday against a nonprofit that tracks hate speech on the social media platform. The suit alleged that the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) improperly gained access to data on the platform for its research monitoring X, the social media platform Musk purchased last year and renamed last week.

X's lawsuit comes one day after the CCDH revealed that the company had threatened to sue.

The CCDH has published reports tracking hate speech against minority groups, including LGBTQ individuals, Muslims and Jews, as well as dis- and misinformation on multiple social media platforms, including X.

CCDH research into hate speech on X concluded that the platform took no action against 99 percent of Blue subscribers' posts that were reported for hate speech. Similar studies found that the platform took no action against 89 percent of antisemitic posts and 97 percent of anti-Muslim posts.

One in ten people in the country cannot afford meat, poultry or fish every day, newly released EU statistics show

More Germans did not have enough money for meals comprising of meat, fish, poultry or a vegetarian equivalent every day in 2022, according to the latest data tracked by EU statistical office Eurostat.

The new figures, released by German corporate newsroom Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland on Monday, demonstrated a year-on-year increase of 0.9% to 11.4%, meaning that nearly 10 million people in the most populous EU nation often lacked proper meals. That shocking number rises to 19.3%, when it comes to single parents, marking a solid rise of 2.6% compared to the previous year.

Comment: Germany is the canary in the coal mine. One Europe's strongest economy, it is now staggering due to insane EU policies regarding Russia. If Germany can be brought low, what fate awaits the rest of the continent?
