Scott Ritter: Three reasons why 'fire and fury' won't work with Iran

On July 22, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo addressed a crowd of Iranian-Americans, giving voice to a new American policy on Iran that seeks to undermine the legitimacy of the Iranian government. It would also strangle Iran's economy through the reimposition of economic sanctions that had been set aside when Iran and five other Western nations, including the United States, came to an agreement in 2015 over Iran's nuclear program.

According to this agreement, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, Iran accepted sanctions on its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. When President Trump withdrew from the JCPOA in May, he promised to reimpose sanctions that had been approved by Congress, including those targeting Iran's sale of oil. The goal of the Trump administration, Pompeo told the crowd, was to "get [Iranian oil] imports as close to zero as possible" by this November.

Pompeo's address did not go over well in Tehran. Addressing a gathering of Iranian diplomats, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani asked, "Is it possible that everyone in the region sells their oil and we stand idly by and watch? Do not forget that we have maintained the security of this waterway [Strait of Hormuz] throughout history. We have historically secured the route of oil transit. Do not forget it."

Saudi 'social media group' shut down over concerns it threatened Canada with 9/11 style terror attack - UDATE

Saudi terror attack Canada human rights spat
A Saudi Arabian social media creative group has published a picture of an Air Canada flight moving towards the CN Tower, accompanied by a warning to the Canadian government.

The picture was produced by a group called @Infographic_KSA, which describes itself as a project "managed by a group of Saudi youth who are interested in technology and social media Facts backed by numbers & evidence". Its online presence is mostly on Twitter, Instagram and Telegram.

Update: Sputnik reports:
On Monday morning, a verified Saudi infographics twitter account seemingly threatened Canada with a 9/11 style attack amid a diplomatic standoff between Riyadh and Ottawa.

The group deleted the tweet later in the day and posted a different version of the infographic, without the passenger plane flying towards the CN Tower in the Toronto skyline.

They also issued an apology for how the tweet was interpreted, but insisted it was not meant as a terror attack threat to Canada.

"Earlier we posted an image which was inappropriate, which is why we deleted the post immediately. The aircraft was intended to symbolize the return of the ambassador, we realize this was not clear and any other meaning was unintentional. We apologize to anyone who was offended," KSA Infographics said in a statement.

The group's twitter account (@Infographic_KSA), which had over 350,000 followers, has since been deleted, though it's unclear it Twitter suspended the account for violating its terms of use or if the account's administrators deleted it due to the public backlash the tweet unsurprisingly generated.

The Syrian army has on multiple occasions stumbled upon caches of weapons and ammunition made in western countries and Israel while performing sweeping operations in provinces, liberated from terrorist and militant groups.

While performing a mop up operation in the northern part of Homs, Syrian authorities discovered a weapons cache, which contained various weaponry and ammunition, Syrian news agency Sana reported. According to the media outlet, the cache was left behind by "terrorists" and contained 14.5mm machine guns, sniper modifications of FAL rifles produced in unspecified western countries, assault rifles, Israeli-made grenades and different types of ammunition.

Editor of UK 'Jewish News' says his paper was wrong to call Jeremy Corbyn an 'existential threat' to Jewish life

Britain's three most prominent Jewish weekly newspapers - Jewish News, the Jewish Chronicle and the Jewish Telegraph - published a joint front page describing Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn as an "existential threat" to British Jews on 25 July. Stephen Oryszczuk is foreign editor of Jewish News. Here, he speaks exclusively to The Canary in a personal capacity about why he feels the attack was wrong. But beyond that, he suggests how we can come together to fight the scourge of antisemitism, and how to do so without hindering free speech and justified criticism of Israel.

PART I - Who is Stephen Oryszczuk?

Q: Could you introduce yourself?

A: I'm foreign editor at Jewish News (JN), the UK's largest Jewish newspaper, one of the three papers that just published a shared front page attacking the Labour Party over antisemitism. That random assortment of consonants after my first name is Ukrainian origin. I've been in this role for six years, and speak here in a personal capacity. Before the JN I was an editor at a Jewish news TV channel based abroad.

Q: But you're not Jewish, I understand?

A: Nope, although there may be some J-genes back there on my dad's side, probably the ones that manifest as love of food.

Q: How did you come to work for a Jewish newspaper?

A: By complete accident! I've been covering the Jewish world for a long time now, particularly Israel. The boss of the TV channel actually preferred his journalists to be non-Jews. He said we could be more objective. I'm not sure that's true, but that was his take on it. I've always been taught to look at things objectively, to keep my head when all about are losing theirs. It's so important given the passions on the subjects I cover. Unfortunately, last week passion became apoplexy.

Twitter resists the pressure, says Alex Jones will not be banned because he hasn't broken their rules

The Twitter accounts of Alex Jones and his show Infowars have not been suspended because the conspiracy theorist hasn't violated the rules of the social network service, company CEO has explained.

"We didn't suspend Alex Jones or Infowars yesterday. We know that's hard for many but the reason is simple: he hasn't violated our rules," Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey said.

However, Twitter will enforce a ban if Jones does violate the rules, the internet entrepreneur said, adding that the platform will "continue to promote a healthy conversational environment by ensuring tweets aren't artificially amplified."

Comment: Twitter isn't free from arbitrary bans: But at least their bans tend to be temporary, and they often apologize for "mistakenly" banning people. Not ideal, of course. The fact is, the peer pressure to enforce "progressive morality" is enormous, and only seems to be getting stronger. It's doubtful Twitter will be able to keep up the facade of neutrality much longer.

More censorship to come: Facebook's 'most sensitive political decisions' to be outsourced to think tanks

Facebook reportedly plans to hand over political decision-making related to 'propaganda campaigns' to think tanks. The IT giant already uses 'geopolitical expertise' from the group funded by State Department and the US Army.

The company's head Mark Zuckerberg wants to outsource "most sensitive political decisions," leaving "geopolitics" to think tanks, Facebook employees privately told Reuters.

Facebook is already working closely with the Digital Forensic Research Lab, organized by the US government-funded think tank, the Atlantic Council. The company relies on the lab's "geopolitical expertise" when tackling the 'Russian trolls' allegedly meddling in US election campaigns.

Facebook's Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos explained to reporters that the tech company itself doesn't have "the necessary information" to identify the "relationship between political motivations that we infer about an adversary and the political goals of a nation-state."

New bill banning smoking in public places draws ire in Gauteng, South Africa

The Gauteng Liquor Forum is calling for the scrapping of the Tobacco Bill which is currently open for public comment.

They are arguing that the current Bill is effective but needs a better enforcement plan.

The Bill, if passed, seeks to ban the display of all tobacco products. In addition, smokers could face a three months jail sentence if found smoking in public. Dedicated smoking areas in restaurants will also be removed.

Chairperson of the Gauteng Liquor Forum, Fanny Mokoena says the banning of smoking in public places will have a negative impact on their members.

Actress Alyssa Milano blames 'Russian meddling' for Democrats' loss in Ohio

Lefty Alyssa Milano is reeling from what looks like another election loss for the Democrats in Ohio. The actress decided to take time to calmly analyse where her party went wrong. Only joking! She blamed Russians of course!

The Republicans secured a narrow election win in a conservative area, where the party spent millions on ads and activists. Milano has spoken for a generation of hysterical Democrats by coming to the only conclusion possible - Moscow did it, and may have been in cahoots with the Green Party.

The Ohio 12 special election was held after the Republican incumbent Pat Tiberi stepped down. As it stands the Republicans have claimed victory, but the result is so close absentee ballots could still swing it when they're counted later this month.

Milano, a famously left-wing actress, managed to hit out at both Russia, the Republicans, the Green Party and the basic workings of democracy on Twitter. She was angry that Democrat challenger Danny O'Connor appears to have fallen just short of what would have been an unlikely win, in part because the Green Party took 1,000 votes.

A pilot and four passengers were killed Sunday afternoon when a twin-engine aircraft, which had declared an emergency, crashed into a busy parking lot across from South Coast Plaza, striking a car whose driver was apparently inside shopping.

The Cessna 414 was on approach to John Wayne Airport, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi. There were no survivors.

The plane went down at 12:28 p.m. in the parking lot of a Staples Supercenter, at 3861 S. Bristol St. in Santa Ana, near Sunflower Avenue. The parking lot is shared by a CVS drug store, a Michaels art-supply store, a Wells Fargo Bank branch and other stores. A gas station is adjacent to the lot.

The crash site is diagonally across the intersection from popular South Coast Plaza.
