Microsoft threatens to shut down social media site Gab after anti-Semitic posts by random user

Andrew Torba Gab Microsoft

Editor's note: Since the publication of this article, more information has surfaced about the threatening nature of the posts, which seem to be a clear violation of Gab's terms of service. PJ Media condemns violent threats in the strongest possible terms. See update below.

Microsoft Azure, the web hosting provider for Gab, has given the company 48 hours to delete some anti-Semitic posts or face a Big Tech shut-down. Gab is a Twitter alternative that claims to protect the right to free speech. It's not a very good alternative, as the numbers just aren't there to keep it interesting. Most of the time it's just righties and ultra-righties fighting amongst themselves. But Gab's claim to fame is that they won't kick people off for having unpopular views or engaging in insult trading that morons refer to as "hate speech." For some, that's a worthwhile promise.

It should be noted that in America the term "hate speech" is not a legal one, at least according to the Supreme Court. So-called "hate speech," be it racist, bigoted, anti-Semitic or just plain mean, is protected as reaffirmed in Matal v. Tam in 2017. "Speech that demeans on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, disability, or any other similar ground is hateful; but the proudest boast of our free speech jurisprudence is that we protect the freedom to express 'the thought that we hate,'" wrote Justice Alito.

Comment: Nobody likes anti-semites (the real ones). And a lot of people think Alex Jones is a clown. So when these types are shut down not many complain. So the question is, will people be more willing to normalize censorship when more reasonable voices become the target? See also:

Following the golden rule: Iran and Venezuela prime examples of intrinsic value of money vs. gold

Once again, gold has proved itself to be the most reliable safe haven as more and more citizens in countries hit by US sanctions are hoarding the metal in an effort to protect their savings from collapsing national currencies.

Rising demand for gold in Iran and Venezuela has sent prices for the precious metal to unprecedented levels while local currencies depreciate daily.

As of the end of July, gold prices in the struggling Latin American state saw a 3.1-million-percent increase against the beginning of the year, with an ounce of the yellow metal surging to 211 million bolivars ($1019,45). Venezuela is currently fighting the worst economic crisis ever, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) expecting inflation to reach a colossal one-million percent by the end of 2018. The skyrocketing inflation that is unavoidably dragging down the Venezuelan bolivar is forcing people to buy up gold to keep their savings from disappearing.

Comment: This week has been especially volatile for emerging markets currencies as many saw devaluations such as the Turkey Lira, Argentina's Peso, Russian Ruble, the Rand and Brazil's Real all collapsed plus the Chinese Yuan.

The true victim of social media censorship is personal responsibility

Only the individual is responsible for their consumption of information.
Social media censorship
Between Trump's tirades against alleged "fake news" outlets and the recent banning of Alex Jones from Facebook, Apple, and YouTube, our society appears to be obsessed with trying to silence the opposition by controlling the flow of information. And while the recent Jones prohibition has sparked a national debate over who the First Amendment applies to, there is more to this story than just the issue of state-protected free speech.

To be sure, the Bill of Rights is vital to individual liberty and was written explicitly to restrain the government from infringing upon the rights of the people. And while Facebook may sometimes be more accommodating to the government than many of us would like, the fact remains that it is a private company and it has the right to ban whomever it chooses. The same goes for YouTube and Apple.

Wikipedia founder joins the chorus of idiots accusing Corbyn of 'anti-semitism'

Jimmy Wales

Jimmy Wales the founder of Wikipedia has disappointed a lot of folks in the last day by siding with Israel over the latest exchange of fire between Israel and Gaza, and by essentially accusing British Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn of anti-semitism. Here's the Wales's tweet that began it all yesterday:

Wales was promptly called to account and defended his tweet:

Question

The Alex Jones problem

Alex Jones
Dear Readers, this article was written many years ago and never published, or mentioned in any of our books. With the recent events that Alex Jones has been 'banned' by major social media, Apple (AAPL) and others; we felt further analysis was required. As with anything in this world, things are not always as it seems.

Here's the gist of this analysis. The alt-media attacks the establishment on all fronts (and they have ample reason to be attacked). However, logically, this doesn't make the alt-media right, or protected from some of the flaws they are exposing shown by the Establishment. Remember, that the Establishment is really just well funded, they are people too. There isn't likely a single individual in the Elite of the Establishment which enjoys to watch human suffering they create with their policies, but as a whole, they act with the subtle and un-agreed agreement of the group-think of the Elite. Plausible Deniability. "We" didn't do that, we hired some company to do it, and they messed it up.

The grand irony of RussiaGate: How the US becomes more like the USSR every day

When the Soviet regime exiled Sakharov in 1980, everybody assumed the USSR was permanent and impregnable to collapse.
US and USSR
There are many ironies in the RussiaGate drama, but none greater than this: The U.S. becomes more like the former U.S.S.R. every day. Longtime correspondent Bart D. sketches out the irony:

I look at the US economy and what I see in actual everyday life is that corrupted capitalism has resulted in the same problems for average citizens as what crony communism did for the citizens of the USSR.

Two F-15 fighter jets were scrambled on Friday evening after the unauthorised take-off of an aircraft from a Seattle airport prompted a major security alert.

There were no passengers on board when it crashed about 30 miles later, according to local police, who said they knew the identity of the 29-year-old mechanic at the controls and believed him to be suicidal.

Flights were halted in and out of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Passengers on airliners took to social media to relay messages from air crew as they were told their flights would not be taking off.

Multiculti Europe: Dutch PVV councillor commits suicide after publishing testimony that she was 'raped to order' by Muslim gang

A councilor for the anti-immigration PVV in The Hague has committed suicide, hours after placing a video online in which she claimed to have been kidnapped and raped to order by a Muslim gang over a year ago.

Comment: Willie Dille's husband has confirmed this to be true to the daily AD.

Willie Dille, 53, who served as an MP for the PVV from 2010 to 2012, said in the video that former PVV MP Arnoud van Doorn, who has since converted to Islam, was behind the attack and that he 'hated her intensely'. The attack happened 'March 15, May 15 2017,' Dille said.

The video, which showed a pale and thin-looking Dille looking around nervously, was removed from social media shortly after it went online.

Comment: The Dutch establishment has created a dangerous climate for anyone who opposes the government's culture war agenda. Just like populist politician Pim Fortuyn, Willie Dille was demonized and terrorized in a most outrageous and cruel manner.

May she find peace.

Crumbling infrastructure: New Yorkers, get ready for a commuter apocalypse

It's a good thing that New York is the city that never sleeps - since it takes all day to get anywhere.

A perfect storm of subway repairs, highway construction, commuter rail woes and worsening gridlock is creating a commuter doomsday the likes of which the city has never seen before.

"It's really bad out there, and it doesn't seem like it's going to get any better," Robert Sinclair, spokesman for AAA Northeast, said of the amalgam of transit troubles. "For the next four or five years, every day will be like Thanksgiving."

The no-platforming of Infowars is a landmark event in the information age

account disabled
Always the trend-setter, Apple's decisive action against Infowars has led to an unprecedented domino effect. After Apple delisted podcast links from the right-wing media outlet, Spotify soon followed. Facebook made a decision to 'unpublish' Infowars' pages hours later, before the group's main home, YouTube, said it had 'terminated' the group's channel, watched by 2.5 million subscribers.

Hundreds of well-intentioned campaigners, commentators and even journalists are celebrating the public hanging of Infowars - but this style of execution benefits no one.

The major internet platforms are increasingly society's chief arbiters of free speech. Our conversations, relationships, businesses and democracies are increasingly mediated by a handful of global, for-profit companies.

Those companies are within their rights to set their own rules about who can and cannot share information on their sites - but Facebook and YouTube have become de facto global information services. Of the world's 3 billion internet users, 2.2 billion are active Facebook users and 1.8 billion have active YouTube accounts. When tech giants hold a monopoly on free speech online, that responsibility must be taken particularly seriously.
