Video shows Yemen's Houthis seize cargo ship in Red Sea, warn that Israeli assets are 'legitimate targets'

houthi Galaxy Leader
© Kristijan Bracun/APFILE:
Yemen's Houthis say they have taken control of a cargo ship in the southern Red Sea as the war in Gaza sends tensions soaring in the region.

The Houthis, who control northern Yemen and its Red Sea coast, said the ship was Israeli, but Israel described it as a British-owned and Japanese-operated cargo vessel with no Israeli nationals on board.

Some 25 people are believed to have been on board the Galaxy Leader - reported to be partly owned by an Israeli businessman and sailing under the flag of Bahamas - when it was seized en route from Turkey to India.

Comment: Al Jazeera provides analysis on the implications of the incident:
[...]

No shots were fired, and the seized ship is a civilian vessel sailing between neutral countries, but the incident still has the potential to trigger a serious escalation in the latest Israel-Palestine conflict.

In the worst-case scenario, it could be the first move in drawing the United States and Iran into direct involvement in the war.

It seems that the US, as well as Iran, have no desire to enter into a conflict with each other - that hasn't, of course, stopped the US, UK, and EU, sending troops, warships, money, and weapons to Israel to keep the genocide going:

Most of the Red Sea is wider than 200km (124 miles), but its southern end, the Bab al-Mandeb passage, is a chokepoint less than 20km (12 miles) wide from the Yemeni island of Mayyun across to the coast of Djibouti and Eritrea. Every year, more than 17,000 ships pass through it. That's nearly 50 a day.

Many of them have a legal status like the Galaxy Leader, which flies the flag of the Bahamas, is operated by a Japanese company, and had a Bulgarian master and a crew from at least five other countries, none of them Israel. In the complex world of shipping, the ownership of a ship is less important than the flag of the vessel, which signifies its country of registration, and its operating company.

The Bahamas offers what is known as a "flag of convenience". It's a country with low taxes and less stringent labour policies, which attract operators to register their ships there. The operating company is Japan's Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, known as the NYK Line, which runs 818 ships.

Among almost 1,500 ships transiting the straits every month, there may be scores that could be linked to Israel and that are thus vulnerable to further Houthi hijackings.

Shipping must go on come what may, so will all "Israel-linked" ships just be left at the mercy of the Houthis?

Probably not, but the options to prevent further hijackings are limited to three: sending armed ships to accompany commercial traffic, destroying or severely limiting the Houthi offensive capacity at sea, and persuading them to refrain from attacking.

For the first option, the question is who could provide armed naval patrols in the Red Sea?

Saudi Arabia and Egypt, countries bordering the Red Sea, have strong and sophisticated navies. But Saudi Arabia is in an uneasy truce with the Houthis, which they are loathe to disturb. Egypt is trying to remain neutral and would not want to get dragged into tensions with the Houthis either. Israel cannot spare any ships for the task.

The only force left to deal with the Houthi threat would be the United States navy.

Since October 7, the US has deployed many assets to the Middle East, centred around two carrier strike groups (CSGs).The one in the Mediterranean, the CSG 12, is led by the newest and most modern nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R Ford. The CSG 2, currently in the Gulf of Oman, is fronted by the USS Dwight D Eisenhower. Each aircraft carrier is accompanied by a guided missile cruiser, two or three destroyers and a flotilla of auxiliaries, such as tankers, store ships and mobile repair bases.

Each of the two CSGs has a clearly defined task: The CSG 12 is to monitor the wider area of Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq and act against any threats that could escalate the conflict. The CSG 2 is there to watch Iran and act against it if the situation escalates.

The Eisenhower CSG is being kept outside the Strait of Hormuz as a direct message to Iran that the US has no hostile intentions, yet. Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has made it clear that his country would continue to support Hamas and the Palestinian people but it does not want to go to war itself.

Thus, the CSG 2 is demonstrating a less-than-warlike intention, staying in the Gulf of Oman, from which its aircraft could still reach targets inside Iran if the need arises or it could move into the Gulf in the unlikely case that the US should want to escalate its threat.

Outside of the CSGs, the US navy also has individual ships monitoring Houthi missile launches. On October 19, the USS Carney shot down several Houthi missiles and drones targeting Israel.

With all these assets having specific tasks, American options are limited. The only ships that can be used to escort commercial shipping are those grouped around the amphibious carrier USS Bataan, currently just south of Suez. Moving it south would weaken US potential to respond to any escalation around Gaza.

Which brings us to the second option. The Houthis are known for their readiness to take on even stronger enemies. The US targeting them directly could risk a major escalation. Washington could ask Israel to target Houthi ports with long-range missiles, but even that is risky.

So we come to the third option, de-escalation.

It seems that again Iran is the key. If the taking of the Galaxy Leader was an independent Houthi action not instigated by Tehran, the US could engage in quiet diplomacy to nudge Iran into reigning in its proxy and avoiding new hijackings at sea.

This might be the most realistic way out but only if all parties involved show restraint.

The stakes are high. Another hijacking could have a snowball effect, pulling in other countries more actively into an already devastating conflict and pushing it to the point of no return.

Iran, Russia call for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

iran russia gaza
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has held a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, during which the two sides stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The primary focus of the discussion, initiated from the Iranian side on Sunday, centered around the current situation in the Gaza Strip, where an Israeli onslaught has killed at least 12,000 Palestinians, including over 5,000 children, since October 7, IRNA's office in Moscow reported, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The ministers highlighted the need for an immediate ceasefire and delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilians in Gaza.

Comment: Meanwhile growing number of people who are outraged with Israel's crimes against humanity can see clearly which countries are too cowardly to call for a ceasefire.

What's also notable about these discussions is their frequency, subject matter (particularly that which is only hinted at), as well as how they demonstrate the strengthening of ties, and general agreement on matters, between the two nations. Whereas the West and its allies, both internally and externally, are showing signs of fracturing: Also check out SOTT radio's: NewsReal: Why is Israel's War Against Palestinians 'Existential' for the West?

House Ethics Committee chair files resolution to expel George Santos

Republican Rep. Michael Guest of Mississippi, chairman of the House Ethics Committee, filed a resolution Friday to expel New York GOP Rep. George Santos after a committee report uncovered "substantial evidence" the congressman broke the law.

The ethics report released Thursday found that Santos used campaign cash for "personal uses" and "knowingly" committed fraud, all while misrepresenting his resume to constituents, voters and staff. Guest's resolution, which argues Santos "is not fit to serve as a Member of the United States House of Representatives," will be taken up following Congress' Thanksgiving recess.

"Given the intense public scrutiny surrounding Representative Santos and the ongoing activity at the DOJ, including indictments, the Ethics Committee decided to finish its work without going through a lengthier process that provides for the Committee to make a recommendation of punishment to the House," Guest said in a statement. "The evidence uncovered in the Ethics Committee's Investigative Subcommittee investigation is more than sufficient to warrant punishment and the most appropriate punishment, is expulsion. So, separate from the Committee process and my role as Chairman, I have filed an expulsion resolution."

Presidential frontrunner reveals Judaism conversion plans

Javier Milei is tipped by pollsters to triumph in Sunday's run-off election in Argentina.

Argentina's libertarian presidential candidate Javier Milei, a prominent supporter of Israel, has outlined his intention to convert to Judaism, though he also acknowledged that any move to do so would likely have to wait until his political career is over.

Milei, a 53-year-old self-described "anarcho-capitalist" who leads the Liberty Advances party, is squaring off against the South American country's economy minister Sergio Massa of the ruling Homeland coalition in Sunday's run-off elections. The contest, which follows an election in October that failed to establish a clear winner, has been dominated by Argentina's dire fiscal outlook. The country's inflation is running well into triple digits while its poverty rate stands at 40%.

However, while Argentina's economic crisis will likely be the most pressing issue for voters, Milei has also made clear that he would view the United States, and in particular Israel, as key allies in constructing his foreign policies.

Israel admits it killed its own at Nova music festival

An Israeli police investigation into the Hamas attack on the Nova music festival near the Gaza border on 7 October revealed that an Israeli attack helicopter killed some of the attendees, Haaretz reported on 18 November.

According to a police source, an investigation into the incident showed that an Israeli combat helicopter that arrived at the scene from the Ramat David base fired at Hamas fighters and other Palestinians who crossed through the border fence from Gaza into Israel, but also fired on some of the Israelis attending the music festival. According to the police, 364 people were killed there.

The Israeli military and rescue services previously claimed that 260 Israelis were killed at the festival, all by Hamas and Palestinians in a deliberate massacre. But this is the first acknowledgement that Israeli forces killed some of their own.

Previous reports in Israeli media revealed that Israeli forces killed Israeli civilians in Be'eri, a settlement also near the Gaza border. In that case, Hamas fighters were holding Israelis captive in homes. When the Israeli military arrived, it opened fire, including by firing tank shells, killing both Israeli captives and Hamas fighters.

Uranium particles from Ukraine detected in Europe raising health issues

Depleted Uranium
© Strategic Culture Foundation
In March 2023 the UK and in September 2023, the US, delivered shells filled with depleted uranium to Ukraine, or maybe they delivered it before already, we don't know, usually when they announce something it already happened!

Depleted uranium can be used to reinforce armour-plating on tanks but is favoured for weapons because of its extreme density and ability to pierce conventional tank armour. These types of shells sharpen on impact, which further increases their ability to bore through armour, and they ignite after contact.

In September 2023 after the delivery of these shells filled with depleted uranium, the Russian Ministry of Defence stated that it carried out strikes on warehouses where Ukrainian troops stored these depleted uranium shells and UK-made long-range Storm-shadow missiles.

"Last night, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched a group strike with high-precision long-range air-based weapons and unmanned aerial vehicles at the storage sites of Storm-shadow cruise missiles and depleted uranium ammunition," the ministry said in a statement back in September 2023.

Although the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi, said that there is no danger to public health in using depleted uranium, the Washington Post and other so-called quality newspapers however, said that there is a real danger to public health. The UK was the first to start deliveries of depleted uranium shells and long-range Storm-shadow missiles to Ukraine in March 2023, also ammunition with depleted uranium for the British tank Challenger 2. The US announced on 6 September 2023, that it would send depleted uranium ammunition and cluster bombs to Ukraine.

In May 2023, information emerged about a powerful explosion in one of the warehouses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near the city of Khmelnitsky in western Ukraine. Most likely due to a rocket attack by the Russian forces, a warehouse for British uranium-filled grenades was hit. According to some reports, another warehouse containing depleted uranium ammunition was also hit by Russia in the Ternopil region.

This caused panic among the residents of Western Ukraine, but also in the borderlands of Ukraine like Poland. In the Ukrainian media information emerged about an increase in the level of gamma radiation after the destruction of both storage sites. Scientists said a fairly small dose of gamma radiation came from the depleted uranium in the ammunition; a large increase indicates the destruction of a very large number of munitions with depleted uranium, thereby increasing the level of radioactive material in the air.

Slovakia warns EU it will block 12th sanctions package if it includes nuclear fuel supplies

The government of Slovakia will not support restrictions on imports of nuclear fuel from Russia as part of a 12th package of EU sanctions that is currently being discussed by member states, the country's Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar said on Saturday.

According to the Blanar, Bratislava will not block the much-debated batch of penalties on Moscow, on the condition that the ban on nuclear fuel is removed.

"It is the red line for us... Our nuclear power plants cannot yet switch to alternative fuel. This [nuclear-related clause] definitely cannot be there," Blanar said, referring to the new package.

Comment: Evidently some of the EU's leadership are too incompetent to notice what destruction these sanctions are wreaking on their economies, meanwhile it's highly likely that others are aware but they don't care.

This issue also reveals that the suicidal sanctions run the risk of bringing down the EU itself:

Jim Jordan subpoenas Bank of America over giving Americans' bank info to FBI after January 6

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) on Thursday subpoenaed Bank of America (BoA) after the major banks shared American banking information to the FBI without legal process in Washington, DC, around January 6, 2021.

The Judiciary Committee said that BoA, voluntarily and without legal process, provided the FBI with a list of individuals who made transactions in the D.C. area using a BoA debit or credit card between January 5 and 7, 2021.

Steven Jensen, the FBI's then-Section Chief of the Domestic Terrorism Operations Section, said he acted to "pull" the BoA information from FBI systems because the "leads lacked allegations of federal criminal conduct."

Trump to remain on Colorado ballot after judge rejects 14th Amendment challenge to eligibility

April 14, 2023 • Indianapolis, Indiana
Former President Donald Trump's name will remain on the Colorado 2024 presidential primary ballot, a judge ruled Friday.

"The court orders the Secretary of State to place Donald J. Trump on the presidential primary ballot when it certifies the ballot on January 5, 2024," U.S. District Court Judge Sarah B. Wallace wrote in her ruling.

The decision came following a legal challenge seeking to disqualify Trump from appearing on the ballot, citing the 14th Amendment.

The lawsuit sought to use the Disqualifications Clause, or Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which bars individuals who have "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" against America or who have aided those engaged in such activities from holding office, and specifically cited Trump's alleged involvement in the Capitol riot of Jan. 6, 2021.

Watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), as well as six Colorado voters, filed the lawsuit in September, one of multiple legal attempts in a number of states across the country aiming to prevent Trump winning another four years in the White House.
