Best of the Web: Hidden in plain sight: Do psychopaths run the world?

© America Out Loud
Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we're being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I'm liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That's what's insane about it.
- John Lennon (1940-1980), English singer and songwriter

Lennon and others externalise the apparent paranoia that wells up inside us. "The world has gone mad!" More often than not we partition this voice off, content to view the world as others prescribe it. But who are these others, and what do they want?

The term psychopath is often criminally misjudged, thanks largely to unhelpful portrayals of sick, twisted and violent psycho-character types in the popular media. This has led, by way of public ignorance, to the common belief that the psychopath has no function, role or place in open society. A swift offload that allows us, the apparent sane majority, to circumvent our worst fears.

Any notion that the psychopath is incapable of functioning in open society is, according to M.E. Thomas1 - a self-confessed sociopath - flawed. The question is not the capacity to function, but rather what capacity or form that function takes. As Thomas says, psychopaths and sociopaths share an intertwined clinical history; both can function, they just do so differently. And though we are left to muse on what mask that function may take, in many social situations they excel.

Comment: It is most interesting that Mr. Parkins skirts around the work of master researcher Dr. Andrew Lobaczewski. His book, Political Ponerology, is the most comprehensive analysis of the destructive effects of psychopathy on the fabric of society.

A 24/7 news channel launched by the US-backed Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Voice of America has started broadcasting from the Czech Republic to offer "an alternative to disinformation" in Russia and neighboring countries.

Called "Current Time," it is available via cable, satellite and digital platforms, aiming at Russian speakers in Russia and its neighbor nations such as the Baltic states, Ukraine and a range of countries in central and eastern Europe.

The channel was launched Tuesday and is a joint project of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and Voice of America (VOA), which are both funded by the US Congress.

"We are trying to be objective and allow all parties to speak out, offering a full spectrum of opinions and comments on debatable issues. We pay special attention to issues that are overlooked by the official media of various countries," the Current Time website states as its mission.

Comment: ...except those issues our bosses in the Pentagon tell us to overlook.

Propaganda alert: Amnesty International's report on Syria's Saydnaya prison executions lacks evidence

In yet another act of "convenient" timing, Amnesty International has released a bombshell report alleging the execution by hanging of 13,000 Syrian prisoners by the Syrian government from 2011-2015. The report, "Human Slaughterhouse: Mass Hangings And Extermination At Saydnaya Prison, Syria," which contains rather detailed descriptions of torture, rape, and execution as well as other horrific activity has no doubt caught the attention of many people, even those who have followed the events transpiring in Syria for the last six years. However, there is one important aspect of the report that Amnesty International lacks . . . evidence.

While the report, at first glance, might sound convincing, an adequate reading of the text reveals it to be yet another Western propaganda piece designed to demonize the Assad government shortly before important talks take place in Switzerland. The report contains the right buzzwords such as "extermination campaign" and reads like a story recounting Nazi concentration camps so as to jog the ever-present memory of the Holocaust, thus causing the reader to subconsciously and consciously associate the Nazi slaughter of the Jews with the alleged Assad execution of 13,000 prisoners. Still, while we must give credit to good writing, we must point out that good writing with no evidence is just a piece of fiction.

Below are a number of reasons to question the report and, as a result, another list of reasons to question the integrity of Amnesty International.

An Arab rights group has found ten of thousands of Israelis are publishing "widespread hatred and incitement against Arabs and Palestinians" on social media, and are often motivated to harass following charged statements by Israeli politicians.

The hate speech is going unnoticed by Israeli officials who are advancing a law to scrub similar content from Facebook, but only when it is made by Palestinians against Israelis, said the Haifa-based group 7amleh, the Arab Center for Social Media Advancement, in a report published Tuesday.

7amleh focused on Hebrew social media posts. Along with the Israeli firm Vigo, it analyzed keywords used online during 2015 and 2016. The group said the results were "horrifying," due to the sharp increase of incitements towards Arabs in the last year. The study showed slanderous, provocative, and threatening posts made by Israelis against Arabs and Palestinians more than doubled in 2016, reaching 675,000 posts made by 60,000 Hebrew-speaking Facebook users.

That number amounts to one inflammatory post every 46 seconds, with one in eight using derogatory terms or "incitement to violence," 7amleh said.

The media, Steve Bannon and the second civil war

riot fire
The entire system is pushing everyone toward chaos, repeating the word ad nauseum, stirring people up into an all-out left-right frenzy.

If you take a peek on Twitter, you'll see lots of people calling for martial law and civil war.
civil war

So many people are just blithely talking about a new civil war... like this is the new normal now.

Well yesterday The Guardian actually posted an op-ed by Paul Mason titled, Trump's advisers want a new civil war - we must not let them have it where he wrote about how Newt Gingrich and Steve Bannon are engaging in "dangerous fantasies" about how America is at war.

But Gingrich isn't really the point of the article. The main focus is on Trump's chief strategist Bannon.

Here's the gist:

BBC uses their own propaganda to accuse WikiLeaks of being 'Russian propaganda'

BBC Wikileaks
On 6 February, the BBC World Service broadcast its latest episode of The Inquiry. The segment was titled Can You Believe What You Read on WikiLeaks?

Since its airing, the BBC has faced criticism. Not only because it could easily ask the same question about itself. But also because it spends the entire episode indulging in the same practice it warns viewers against WikiLeaks for.

Furious Putin accuses Merkel of complicity in Kiev's 'destructive acts,' demands she take action

Putin angry
In a furious telephone call with German Chancellor Angela Merkel Russian President Vladimir Putin accuses Ukraine of using the Normandy format sponsored by Merkel to conceal its military aggression in eastern Ukraine.

The Kremlin has released a summary of a telephone conversation between Russian President Putin and German Chancellor Merkel, which took place yesterday Saturday 7th February 2017.

Note that the summary does not say who initiated the call. The content of the summary however suggests strongly that it was Putin.

Comment: The situation in Eastern Ukraine, as bleak as it is, is only deteriorating. With Trump cutting Kiev off from future funding Poroshenko has declared that there will be no end to the escalation of hostilities. But, with the publication of this message, Putin has once again made it clear that it is not up to Russia to end hostilities. It has been and always will be a problem created by and for the West, whose leaders show absolutely no compunction for the destruction they've wrought.

Further reading: DPR Emergency Statement: Poroshenko prepares for total war following Trump call
The deputy commander of the Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, stated at an emergency briefing in Donetsk last night that Poroshenko is preparing to unleash a full-scale war and reject the Minsk Agreements.

Basurin announced: "Following the talk between Poroshenko and Trump, Ukraine will in the near future cease to receive financial and military support for its terrorist operation in the land of Donbass. In connection with this, the Ukrainian president has fallen into complete despair and is ready to desperately commit to the most reckless action of unleashing a full-scale and bloody war in Eastern Europe."

Trump: 'Bad high school student' would understand travel ban

President Trump has said that US courts are "so political" during a speech to law enforcement officials, as his administration awaits a ruling on whether his controversial travel ban is lawful or discriminates against Muslims based on their religion.

"I don't ever want to call a court biased," Trump said during a speech at the Major Cities Police Chiefs Association Conference in Washington on Wednesday. "So I won't call it biased. And we haven't had a decision yet. But courts seem to be so political."

"It would be so great for our justice system if they [the courts] would be able to read the statement and do what's right."

Putin the mediator: Mending the US-Turkey relationship

Putrumperdo

While US President Donald Trump has affirmed the US' relationship with Turkey will continue under his administration, deep disjunctures between the pair remain. However, a Middle East politics expert has told Sputnik that Russia will be pivotal in reconciling them, and uniting the two countries in the fight against Daesh (also known as ISIL).

Following a phone call with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President Trump issued a statement hailing Turkey as "a strategic partner and NATO ally," and confirmed Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director Mike Pompeo would visit Turkey on February 9 to discuss security issues. However, beneath the boilerplate spin and diplomatic pledge lurk severe divisions between the two countries.

Comment: Even if Trump never desires or realizes any kind of alignment with Turkey, he is still a better candidate for establishing a unified confrontation to end ISIS than complicit Obama could ever be. Putin, should he coax more political magic, has the reins in his hands and some mighty egos to control. 'Tame work' before 'team work.'

Homeland Security Chief John Kelly falls on sword over chaotic travel ban rollout

Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly took the blame for the poor rollout of President Donald Trump's executive order banning nationals from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the US, but said there was a need for speed in doing so.

Kelly testified before the House Homeland Security Committee on Tuesday, explaining the planning that went into the order and its implementation. "The thinking was to get it out quick so that people trying to come here to harm us could not take advantage of a period of time to jump on an airplane," he said.

Kelly apologized for not briefing Congress beforehand, and said that the chaotic rollout was "all on me." "Going forward, I would have certainly taken some time to inform the Congress and certainly that's something I'll do in the future," he said.

Comment: Trump appears to be able to climb the mountain, but can he tame the groundswells? How deep is his fortitude in the face of constant and, in most cases, irrational histrionics? He obviously has a set of reasons and a logical basis for a course of action that, given normal circumstances, would be out of place to raise more than eyebrows. But, the factions are hellbent. Revolution or revelation...what'll it be?
