Flashback Are members of Congress being blackmailed with government surveillance?

congressional blackmail
For some time now, many Americans have wondered how Congress, the elected body that the nation's Founding Fathers saw as the bulwark of liberty, could have been so thoroughly unwilling to, or incapable of challenging the dictatorial power-grabs and the eight-year Constitution wrecking campaign of the Bush/Cheney administration.

There has been speculation on both the far left and the far right, and even among some in the apolitical, cynical middle of the political spectrum, that somehow the Bush/Cheney administration must have been blackmailing at least the key members of the Congressional leadership, most likely through the use of electronic monitoring by the National Security Agency (NSA).

I'll admit that (even though we know J Edgar Hoover did keep a dirt file on members of Congress to help him support his budget allocation each year) I considered the idea of blackmail a bit far out. But now suddenly there is at least some evidence that such seemingly wild speculation may not have been off the mark, with reports that the NSA was indeed monitoring Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA), and that the Bush Administration used the evidence it had obtained of her improper conversations with and promises to assist agents of the Israeli government and its lobby here in the US, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), to blackmail her into supporting the NSA's warrantless spying program -- the very kind of spying that led to her being caught on tape plotting with an agent of a foreign power.

Comment: True then, and truer now.

Russia to respond to orchestrated media attacks on 2018 Presidential Election

The Kremlin spokesperson said that media attacks on the Russian election are politically motivated and some Western countries do not want Russia to have a "strong leader."

Moscow is ready to respond to all possible allegations by Western media over the legitimacy of the 2018 Russian presidential election, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said.
"We are preparing for this, because it is quite predictable. You know that massive attacks on our president [Vladimir Putin] and on our country started long before the election. They are well prepared and orchestrated. We've always responded and will continue to respond to such attacks," Peskov said in an interview with the Rossiya 1 broadcaster, answering a question on whether the Russian authorities are preparing for Western media allegations of fraud and vote rigging.

Israel's humanitarian disaster in Gaza is by design

Gaza oppression
Israel's deliberate targeting of Gaza's health sector and denying those in need of humanitarian care from obtaining it constitute a crime against humanity by any definition

Some describe Gaza as either the world's largest "concentration camp" or "open air prison", while others liken it to the modern-day equivalent of the Warsaw ghetto.

Whatever appropriate analogy you apply to the enclave, that traps two million Palestinians on a slender piece of coastal land along the Egyptian-Israeli border, it's impossible to overstate the level of human misery and suffering that is taking place there today.

A catastrophic situation

When I spoke with Dr Basem Naim, the former Palestinian minister for health and resident of Gaza, I referred him to a UN report that forewarned that Israel's medieval-like blockade promises to make the territory "uninhabitable" by 2020.

Israeli occupation of Palestine: What's wrong with colonialism?

Cherokees

I remember many years ago sitting through a seminar at Macquarie University in Sydney during my Honours studies in Politics. That particular seminar focused on Western colonialism in the South Pacific, and modern Western imperialism in general. I remember one thing vividly from that class that remained etched into my mind. It was a question that the lecturer asked us repeatedly and insistently. 'Why is it so important for indigenous people to maintain their identity? What is so bad with a particular way of life or culture disappearing?'

At the time I could not think of an answer. In fact none of us was able to answer it. I remember feeling like a rabbit in the headlights. Every bit of me told me this was very wrong, but I couldn't explain why. It was the mid-nineties, and only four years after I had moved to Australia from Israel. I was ignorant about what colonialism or settler-colonialism are, and their legacy. I was still blind to the Zionist settler-colonialism in which I grew up, and did not register the fact that by virtue of being white, I automatically embraced the settler-colonial power structure in Australia too.

Mike Pence & King Abdullah clash over US recognition of Jerusalem

The US vice president has said that he and King Abdullah II of Jordan have "agreed to disagree" over the impact of the Trump administration's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Mike Pence met with the monarch in the Jordanian capital of Amman Sunday as part of his three-country Middle East tour. Speaking at a media conference, Abdullah told Pence that he looked to Washington to build "trust and confidence," but added that Jordan viewed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a "potential major source of instability" in the region.

Pence said he wanted to maintain Jordan's role as custodians of Jerusalem's holy sites and reaffirmed Washington's commitment to a two-state solution. "We take no position on boundaries and final status. Those are subject to negotiation," Pence said.

Nasrallah: 'Israel will be easier to defeat than ISIS'

Nasrallah
The following is the second part of an interview aired on Al Mayadeen television, relevant to the headline, in which Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah explains the strategic folly of Trumps position on Israel, and how any escalation on the part of the Zionist occupational entity will result in a defeat swifter than that suffered by ISIS.

Journalist: At the end of the first part of our interview, we concluded on two points. In the first point, you said that the events in Iran will have no consequences and are over, and in the second point we evoked, the most dangerous, is that Trump and Israel are pushing the region towards a big war, and in case this war would be triggered, the Resistance Axis is preparing and has to be prepared. And I ask Your Eminence, are you really worried and concerned that this war happens? Because I understand from your comments that the war is (a real) possibility, they will perhaps trigger it, and that you (are certain to) be victorious in this war.

Hassan Nasrallah: Listen, regarding the possibility of war, it is real. As for the degree of probability, we cannot rule it out, not even for a moment. Because with such a mentality, such an administration... And whatever they say, it's not just Trump, but the Vice-President, the whole of this administration, their vision... You see how some approached the cause of Al-Quds. He approached it with a religious point of view! These things are related to... If you read the statements of the Americans and even the Israelis, you see he wants an Armageddon, he prepares a (real) Armageddon and heads towards it with force. We know their mentality.

Judicial Watch, an educational foundation promoting transparency, accountability and integrity in government, shared new details on the scandalized emails of the former US secretary of state.

The State Department turned over the new emails to Judicial Watch as part of the group's Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, with the subsequent release of 78 pages of those emails. According to reports, three of the emails contained classified information, and others revealed that Hillary Clinton was aware of the system's vulnerabilities related to her private email server.

US District Court Judge James Boasberg ordered the State Department to complete processing of the remaining 72,000 recovered by the FBI during its investigation into Clinton's private email server.
Hillary Clinton tried to hide her emails & knowingly violated laws protecting classified information. Judicial Watch has thus far uncovered 694 emails that Hillary Clinton failed to turn over to the State Dept as required. When will DOJ act? Five months worth of Peter Strzok text messages go missing - FBI cites mystery "glitch"

Additional text messages sent and received by disgraced FBI agent Peter Strzok have been handed over Congress, reports the Associated Press.

In yet another twist to the Peter Strzok saga, the FBI failed to hand over a block of the agent's text messages because they have gone missing.

Comment: The Daily Caller adds:
Strzok and Page were significant players in the Clinton and Trump investigations. As deputy chief of counterintelligence, Strzok oversaw the Trump investigation when it was opened in July 2016. Weeks earlier, he had wrapped up his work as one of the top investigators on the Clinton email probe.

Both worked on Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation until July 2017.
[...]
Page left the Mueller team prior to the discovery of the texts.

Johnson expressed concern over the missing text messages, which were sent during a key period of the Russia investigation. During that time frame is when the Steele dossier was published by BuzzFeed News, when Strzok participated in a Jan. 24 interview with then-national security adviser Michael Flynn, and when James Comey was fired as FBI director.

The end date of the missing Strzok-Page texts is also significant. That's because May 17 is the day when Mueller was appointed to take over the FBI's probe of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government.

Republicans line up to view classified FISA abuse memo, while Democrats stick their heads in the sand

obama fisa memo busted
Busted!
More than 130 congressional members have viewed the classified four-page memo detailing what senior government officials describe as "disturbing and explosive" surveillance abuse by employees of the FBI and Department of Justice under the Obama administration against President Trump and members of his campaign.

But almost all of them were Republicans.

Since the document was released Thursday to House members "only Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee have seen it," a congressional source with knowledge of the memo said.

Frigid temperatures didn't stop the US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman from taking part in the Orthodox Epiphany bathing ritual, who bravely immersed in ice-cold waters of Istra River.

Sporting a bathrobe and traditional Russian footwear, valenki, the US diplomat gathered his strength in front of reporters before taking a dip in freezing waters at the New Jerusalem Monastery outside Moscow. A team accompanying Hunstman cheered him on, as the ambassador performed a traditional triple plunge underwater in a ritual believed to wash sins away.
