We're listening! US senators call for dialogue after Russia's new nuclear arsenal unveiled

A group of US lawmakers have called for strategic dialogue with Moscow. They feel that the matter is "more urgent" following Russian President Vladimir Putin's unveiling of a number of cutting-edge weapons systems."

A US-Russia Strategic Dialogue is more urgent following President Putin's public address on March 1st when he referred to several new nuclear weapons Russia is reportedly developing, including a cruise missile and a nuclear underwater drone," a letter signed by US Senators Edward J. Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) reads.

The letter, addressed to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, was published on Thursday. The senators stressed that while the countries have many "significant" disagreements, including alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US elections and the "annexation" of Crimea, Moscow and Washington need to come to the negotiation table.

Florida senator wants more done to stop "disinformation" online

Florida senator takes Twitter

Florida Sen. Bill Nelson
Florida Sen. Bill Nelson said Thursday that Twitter is taking steps to guard against the kind of fake tweets that hit The Miami Herald last month, but that "a lot more has got to be done."

Nelson called for a technical summit, led perhaps the Federal Trade Commission, to "get all of the relevant companies in the same room and talk about this problem with a collective sense of urgency and come up with some solutions." Such a summit should include social media platforms, digital content companies, software developers, news organizations and government agencies, he said.

However, the Twitter executives who met with Nelson Thursday declined to identify those behind the hoax, which came shortly after the Feb. 14 high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead.

Pass the sick-bag: The Obamas are in talks with Netflix for new show

obama

President Obama at the Obama Foundation Summit in Chicago in October. He is in talks with Netflix for a series of programs, possibly to highlight inspirational stories.
Former President Barack Obama is in advanced negotiations with Netflix to produce a series of high-profile shows that will provide him a global platform after his departure from the White House, according to people familiar with the discussions.

Under terms of a proposed deal, which is not yet final, Netflix would pay Mr. Obama and his wife, Michelle, for exclusive content that would be available only on the streaming service, which has nearly 118 million subscribers around the world. The number of episodes and the formats for the shows have not been decided.

Mr. Obama does not intend to use his Netflix shows to directly respond to President Trump or conservative critics, according to people familiar with discussions about the programming. They said the Obamas had talked about producing shows that highlight inspirational stories.

Comment: Given the success of such series as Stranger Things, American Horror Story and A Series of Unfortunate Events, we suppose it's not that far off the mark to assume a horror series by the Obamas would be a hit with the public. But we think our stomachs are a little too weak to bother watching it. Thanks, but no thanks.

Target Russia: All fire and fury in Ukraine

ukraine on fire
The still decidedly volatile situation in Ukraine - resulting from another in a long line of U.S.-inspired regime changes that have destabilized the geopolitical landscape over the past few decades - is worth revisiting for a number of reasons. With the fourth anniversary of the coup just passed, the sudden, shock passing of veteran investigative journalist Robert Parry and Consortium News founder/editor also affords even greater impetus for doing so. This is especially given his incisive body of reportage on the crisis since 2014; the larger issue of America's worsening relationship with Russia; and the geopolitical implications going forward of these developments. Australian blogger Greg Maybury reports.

A Shabby Deck of Political Cards

For those who haven't seen Ukraine on Fire (UOF), the Oliver Stone-produced documentary on the ongoing Ukrainian crisis, it is not overstating the case to say it's an essential historical document and one of the most important, insightful political documentaries of recent times. It may also be one of the most portentous.

Quite apart from the illuminating history lesson the film delivers as a backdrop to the current situation in one of Europe's most pivotal of battlegrounds, there are many takeaways from the film. To begin, it stands as a vital corrective of the disinformation, misinformation, evangelistic doublespeak, ersatz analysis, unadulterated agitprop, and plain old garden-variety groupthink that attended the public discourse on the events and developments in the country, and which ultimately framed most people's views of the situation. Needless to say, the messages and impressions conveyed by this ongoing, relentless 'psy-op' cum fake news onslaught still 'rules the roost' in most people's minds.

Further, the film's narrative is highly revealing in the manner in which the Western mainstream media (MSM) reported on the events surrounding the turmoil and conflict. In the process it showcases how much the perfidious thought contagion spread by the ever-nefarious neoconservatives and their fellow travelers the liberal interventionists infects U.S. foreign policy, along with the foreign policies of America's assorted vassal states.

German AfD party heads to Syria to talk Syrian refugee return

refugees

The right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) parliamentarians have embarked on an extraordinary trip to assess the situation in Syria and boost the party's hopes of sending back half a million Syrian refugees from Germany.

On March 6, members of AfD took to social media to illustrate their trip to Syria, showing pictures of Damascus and posing with allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

According to Deutsche Welle (DW), the group is comprised of four Bundestag MPs as well as three state parliamentarians from the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).

Helmut Seifen, the deputy leader of the AfD's parliamentary party in the NRW state parliament, told DW that during the trip to Syria the seven-man team aims to determine "whether there is war everywhere, or if there are safe areas as well," at the same time adding that MPs would likely only travel to "safe" areas.

"The goal of the trip is to thoroughly inquire on-site about the humanitarian situation and reconstruction work in areas which have been liberated from terrorists," the party said in a statement cited by German news magazine Der Spiegel, adding that the trip was taken due to a lack of trust in media coverage of the conflict.

Comment: Cognitive dissonance alert: the new German "far-right alt-Nazi fascist racist" AfD travels to Syria, has productive talks with the Grand Mufti, marvels at the freedom of Syria's women, gets along with Assad, and generally comes off as more rational than pretty much all other mainstream Western political parties. But shame on them, they're still "Assad fan boys who hate Muslims".

Update: The AfD made some other discoveries on their trip to Syria, which the Germany Foreign Ministry recommended they forego:
Shell-Holes from Terrorist Mortar Attack in Cathedral

The delegation entered Syria from Lebanon on March 5, with its first destination being the country's capital, Damascus. Firstly, the politicians met with religious figures.

"What the state media won't tell: On February 5, "moderate" terrorists from Eastern Ghouta shelled a Syrian Orthodox Church with mortars. The altar and floor were damaged, fortunately, no one was hurt," Blex wrote on Twitter.

The group held a meeting with Syrian Grand Mufti Ahmad Hassoun, who reportedly called for Syrian refugees to return home. Christian Blex posted a picture from the meeting on his Twitter:

"His excellence Syria's Grand Mufti has emphasized how important the separation of various religions from the state is for their peaceful coexistence in this country. It is also of particular importance to him that Christians in Syria have equal rights with people of other religions," Blex explained. ...

Desire to Restore Normal Diplomatic Relations

The AfD delegation also plans to hold meetings with senior Syrian officials and politicians. They have spoken to the minister of state for national reconciliation affairs about the Syrian government's program, aimed at reintegrating the rebels into peaceful life.

"The government grants amnesty to people willing to reintegrate into peaceful life, as long as they have not committed war crimes. There is a whole array of people, and even cities that are ready to reintegrate, seeking negotiations. [...] They also told us about the background of terrorist groups in Syria and foreign influence on these groups: some are financed by Turkey; others are funded by Saudi Arabia, Qatar or the United States. We have also found out that the United States maintains its bases in Syria in violation of the norms of international law," Blex elaborated.

"The meeting with Mr Ali Haidar, the minister for national reconciliation on Tuesday evening. He told us that over 100,000 former militants (fighting against the government) have returned to peaceful life following the amnesty. More than 100 municipalities and towns have been reintegrated into peaceful life."

Furthermore, it appears that Syria is in dire need of labor and would be glad if those Syrians who left for Germany returned home. Blex has also said that the minister of foreign affairs told the delegation that the officials were aware of Syrians with Islamist background living in Germany.

"He warned us against letting people who may be dangerous into the country. But he also wants to restore normal diplomatic relations with our country," Blex said, saying that another topic on the agenda was Turkey's military operation in Afrin, which has spurred outrage among Syrians.

Is Syria a Safe Country of Origin?

The first two days of the trip the group spent in Damascus, with politicians being impressed by the cleanliness of the streets and the peaceful life in the city. However, the AfD members preferred to steer clear of the territories being constantly shelled from Eastern Ghouta.

"I can only say that Damascus is worth visiting. People are polite and the food is very delicious. Nevertheless, keep in mind the old Arab saying: God bless those who pay visits - but short ones," he wrote on Twitter.

When asked whether Syria was a safe country of origin, Blex said that the first impression was that it was, although said that they could not make a conclusion based on what they had already seen.

"We didn't see any danger on our way from Lebanese border to Damascus. Certainly, there is some threat closer to the territories, where terrorists are, due to the shelling. But they are limited to several regions in Syria. As soon as we visit Homs and Aleppo, we will have a full picture of the situation. For now, I would share the US's evaluation and say that Syria is a safe country," Blex told Sputnik.

"At the fair in Damascus. Usual weekdays. Modern shops. Women in headscarves and without them. It's hard to believe that tens of thousands of Syrian men are in Germany now, and their families have yet to join them..."

Poroshenko warns Russia will suffer 'total annihilation' over gas dispute

Petro Poroshenko press conference
© Sergii Kharchenko / Global Look Press
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko speaks with the media during his press conference in Kyiv, Ukraine, on February 28, 2018.
Russia will face a total annihilation for all its alleged misdeeds and disrespect for international law, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said, amid an escalated dispute between Russia's Gazprom and Ukraine's Naftogaz.

"Russia does not respect the law and does not respect the court's decisions," Poroshenko complained in what was described as a "late-evening interview" with the Financial Times. The Ukrainian leader apparently referred to the recent decision of the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, relating to a dispute between the Russian and Ukrainian energy companies.

The Ukrainian leader went on to say that such disrespect of "international law" would result in Russia being "absolutely destroyed." In an apparent attempt to add weight to his words, Poroshenko recalled that Kiev already filed several "complaints" against Russia to no less than the UN International Court of Justice itself. They, however, brought no consequences so far, nor anything close to the "destruction" so much anticipated by Poroshenko.

Comment: Gazprom has been more than patient with Ukraine's idiot government, and in 2013 went so far as to give a failing Ukrainian government $3 billion discount on gas. As Matthew Crosston wrote,
If the 'master plan' of the Russian Federation was to weaken, disrupt, and destabilize Ukraine, then it only needed to operate according to normal capitalist procedures, demanded full immediate payment of lawfully incurred debt, and simply watch the Ukrainian government economically fall apart. Instead, every maneuver by the Russian Federation seemed more intent on maintaining the 'special' relationship between Slavic brothers.
And how does Ukraine respond? By being impossible to negotiate with, stealing gas, and issuing delusional threats of 'total annihilation'.

State Dept 'concerned' as Kurdish proxy forces abandon their posts

Syrian Democratic Forces Kurds
© Associated Press / Syrian Democratic Forces
The United States is concerned as Syrian Democratic Forces abandon their posts with the US-led coalition fighting Daesh* terrorist group to instead focus on operations in Syria's border district of Afrin, Department of State Spokesperson Heather Nauert said during a press briefing.

"We have seen as the situation in Afrin has taken hold that some of those SDF forces ... have started to leave their work with coalition partners, the fight against ISIS, and head over to Afrin to handle those types of issues," Nauert said on Thursday. "That takes the eye off the ball on ISIS. It's a concern of ours."

Nauert underscored that the SDF has been a tremendous and valuable fighting force in the fight against Daesh.

Comment: Further reading: Pentagon admits it has 'lost control' of Kurdish proxy force in Northern Syria
The US has admitted being faced with large scale desertions of its SDF proxy force in north-eastern Syria and has had no choice but to admit to an "operational pause" in ground activities in regions east of the Euphrates. This is due to Kurdish fighters who had fought under the SDF flag, leaving their posts in US occupied territory to travel west to the Afrin region in order to fight with their brethren against Turkish forces conducting Operation Olive Branch against YPG/PKK targets. Far from being an altruistic force, the Kurdish militants simply think that at this point in time, they have more to strategically gain by playing Turkey against Syria in Afrin than by cooperating with the US in its "mission guard the oil fields" in eastern Syria.

Reports suggest White Helmets are staging new 'documentary' about 'Syrian atrocities'

White Helmets

Pictures allegedly showing the White Helmets' filmmaking studio in Syria's Eastern Ghouta have appeared on social media, prompting numerous news agencies to assume that the group is producing another "documentary" movie about the "atrocities" of the Syrian government.

Syrian activist Penelope Stafyla posted the footage to her Facebook profile to show the "media industry" and the "Hollywood production" of the White Helmets; the images featured fake human limbs, theatrical grease-paint, a plastic bottle with some substance that looked like blood, etc. Stafyla suggested that the group was shooting another film to demonize President Bashar al-Assad as well as to accuse the Syrian government of using chemical weapons against civilians.

Comment: The White Helmets are just another element in the West's 'information war' against Russia and Syria. As Eva Bartlett recently wrote, after being the target of a Guardian hit-piece designed to discredit her work on the White Helmets,
It isn't just that I believe the mainstream media narrative about the White Helmets is wrong; this narrative has been redundantly-exposed over the years. In September 2014, Canadian independent journalist Cory Morningstar investigated hidden hands behind flashy PR around the White Helmets. In April 2015, American independent journalist Rick Sterling revealed that the White Helmets had been founded by Western powers and managed by a British ex-soldier, and noted the "rescuers" role in calling for Western intervention-a No Fly Zone on Syria. (more on these articles below). This was months before Russian media began to write about the White Helmets.

Since then, Vanessa Beeley has done the vast amount of research in greater detail, doing on-the-ground investigations in Syria, including: taking the testimonies of Syrian civilians who had (often brutal) experiences with the White Helmets; establishing that the Syrian Civil Defense exists and has existed since 1953, but are not the White Helmets-which has misappropriated this name; establishing that the international body, the International Civil Defence organisation in Geneva, does not recognize the White Helmets as the Syrian Civil Defence; establishing that men now White Helmets members looted vehicles and equipment from the Syrian Civil Defence in Aleppo-and belongings from civilians; and establishing that White Helmets shared a building in Bab Al Nairab, eastern Aleppo with al-Qaeda and were present as al-Qaeda tortured civilians, among other points.

Was British-Russian spy poisoned over his links to Chris Steele and the Trump dossier?

Skripal
© Toby Melville / Reuters
Police officers seal off the road on which Russian Sergei Skripal and his daughter have been staying in Salisbury, Britain, March 7, 2018.
On Sunday a former British-Russian double agent and his daughter were seriously injured in a mysterious incident in Salisbury, England. The British government says that both were hurt due to "exposure to a nerve agent". Speculative media reports talk of Sarin and VX, two deadly nerve-agents used in military chemical weapons. Anonymous officials strongly hint that 'Russia did it'.

New reports though point to a deep connection between the case and the anti-Trump/anti-Russia propaganda drive run by the Obama administration and the Hillary Clinton election campaign.

Sergei Skripal once was a colonel in a Russian military intelligence service. In the early 1990s he was recruited by the MI6 agent Pablo Miller. He continued to spy for the Brits after his 1999 retirement. The Russian FSB claims that the British MI6 paid him $100,000 for his service. At that time a Russian officer would only make a few hundred bucks per month. Skripal was finally uncovered in 2004 and two years later convicted for spying for Britain. He was sentenced to 18 years and in 2010 he and other agents ware exchanged in a large spy swap between the United States and Russia. Skripal was granted refuge in Britain and has since lived openly under his own name in Salisbury. His wife and his son died over the last years of natural causes. The only near relative he has left is his daughter who continued to live in Russia.

Last week his daughter flew to Britain and met him in Salisbury. On Sunday they went to a pub and a restaurant. At some point they were poisoned or poisoned themselves. They collapsed on a public bench and are now in intensive care. A policeman one the scene was also seriously effected.

Comment: Apparently Skripal, his daughter, and the attending officer weren't the only ones affected:
A total of 21 people were injured and three remain in hospital after the "incident involving attempted murder" which left the former Russian double agent, Sergei Skripal, in critical condition, British police have said.

"Multiple people have been treated, around 21 people, including the man and the woman found on the bench," the acting chief constable of Wiltshire Police, Kier Pritchard, told Sky News, referring to Skripal and his daughter. He also said that all those affected went through "the hospital treatment process" and, in particular, had blood tests.

The acting Wiltshire Police head also said an unspecified "smaller" number of the injured were police officers. He then added that only three people, including the former agent and his daughter, remain in hospital. The third person is a local police sergeant, identified as Nick Bailey.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd said earlier that the officer remains in "serious but stable" condition, adding that he "is conscious, talking and engaging." She also added that Bailey was "one of the first responders," who helped Skripal.
As Moon of Alabama points out, it would make little sense for Russia to be behind this. It's the same dynamic as the "Assad/chemical weapons" propaganda in regard to Syria: using chemical weapons on civilians serves no rational purpose to Assad's government and military. There is no good reason to do so, and every reason not to. Same for Russia in this case, which begs the question: who would want Skripal dead, with the Russians left conveniently to be blamed given the hysterical anti-Russia narratives journalists and people of low IQ everywhere are primed to jump to without any actual evidence? In this context, the Steele/Skripal link is tantalizing. Can't have any loose ends lying about, lest you are exposed as treacherous, lying criminals.

Whatever the case, Skripal's poisoning has the potential to further deteriorate UK-Russian relations.
Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson, who has previously called for British fighters for Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) to be killed, said the Kremlin is becoming an "ever-greater threat" following the incident. Williamson said that Moscow has shown an "increasingly aggressive stance" and that the UK must change the way it deals with the Kremlin following the "disgusting attack."

The Russian Embassy to the UK has reiterated that it has received no information on the case from the British government. "Unfortunately, we have so far received no details on the substance of the case, which is rather worrying," a spokesperson for the embassy said. "Meanwhile, the Foreign Secretary's strongly anti-Russian statement in Parliament looks more like an attempt to send the investigation upon a political track.
Well, the UK would have no interest in sharing any data, given that doing so might expose the fact that Russia didn't do it.
"Although absolutely no facts were provided to the public, we see the issue being translated into the domain of Russia-UK relations, with an active support by the media. The parliamentary debate as well as the Government stance are a testament of London's growing unpredictability as a partner in international relations, whose policy towards Russia is inconsistent and looks rather miscalculated, not least in the eyes of the Russian public."
...
Rudd's avoidance of the UK/Russia issue follows the stance of Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who said on Tuesday that the UK would "respond appropriately and robustly" if a state is found to have been involved. Johnson didn't link Russia directly to the attack, but proceeded to attack the nation, stating that "in many respects a malign and disruptive force."

He also said the UK would reconsider its participation in the upcoming World Cup, which Russia is hosting. He said it was "very difficult to see how UK representation at that event could go ahead in the normal way" if Russian state involvement was proved. Later, a Foreign Office source said that Johnson's comments were not in reference to the England football team's participation.

Commander of Joint Forces Command Sir Chris Deverell said Russia had the capabilities to cripple the UK with cyberattacks on power supplies, air traffic control and even air conditioning. "What they seek to do is to steal, plant, distort, destroy our information," he said, according to the Daily Mail. "It could have very, very serious consequences for a lot of people... They don't care about innocent people going about their lives. They are quite honestly capable of anything."

Former FSB officer Andrey Lugovoy suggested that the poisoning of the ex-Russian double agent may be part of a British campaign to demonize Moscow. "I don't rule out that this is another provocation by British intelligence agencies," Lugovoy told the Guardian.
As is becoming increasingly more the case, the Russians make more sense than the Brits.

DOJ Releases 'Fast And Furious' documents to oversight committee, previously blocked by Obama admin

US President Barack Obama (R) talks to outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder at the portrait unveiling ceremony at the Justice Department in Washington, DC on February 27, 2015. The event marks Holder’s anticipated departure after more than six years of service.
The Justice Department announced Wednesday it would hand over documents related to the Obama-era Fast and Furious gun scandal to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Former President Obama and former Attorney General Eric Holder had previously refused to produce documents requested by Oversight, documents which former Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz at the time called "critical" to pursuing the investigation.

The original Fast and Furious operation - conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - somehow allowed nearly 2,000 firearms to find their way into the hands of Mexican cartel members.

Firearms connected to the program were found at multiple crime scenes in both the United States and Mexico, including the murder scene of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry.
