Puppet Masters
Mueller on Tuesday asked a federal judge in Washington for an order to protect voluminous evidence sought by lawyers for Concord Management and Consulting LLC, one of three companies and 13 Russian nationals charged in a February indictment alleging election meddling via social media. Prosecutors have uncovered evidence of other individuals and entities who are "continuing to engage" in similar activities.
The legal battle between Mueller and Concord's attorneys highlights the tension between intelligence-gathering, which is cloaked in secrecy, and the U.S. legal system, which entitles criminal defendants to review evidence against them. Lawyers for Concord, a company linked to a longtime associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, have been negotiating to obtain documents from the special counsel to mount a legal defense.
The Russians are accused of producing propaganda, posing as U.S. activists and posting political content on social media as so-called trolls to encourage strife in the U.S. The evidence includes between 1.5 and 2 terabytes of data and involves U.S. residents not charged with crimes who the government says were unwittingly recruited by Russians to engage in political activity, prosecutors wrote.
He also identified a possible conflict of interest that FBI employees face when they review and redact potentially incriminating documents.
As chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Johnson had sent a letter to the FBI on May 11 requesting information about its process for producing documents to Congress, the names of the employees who review and redact documents, and the process by which the FBI prevents conflicts of interest.
He also asked the FBI to distinguish between Freedom of Information Act requests, which are subject to statutory restrictions, and constitutional Congressional oversight, which is not subject to the same restrictions.
Johnson said he did not receive a satisfactory response to the May 11 letter, so he met with members of the Justice Department and the FBI.
He sent a follow-up letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray on June 8.
Comment: If it was truly a "chance meeting" where Clinton and Lynch simply "talked about their grandkids", why would the documents need to be so heavily redacted? Hillary Clinton was obviously lying when she gave that excuse. And now the cover-up continues.
"[Rosenstein] will request that the House General counsel conduct an internal investigation of these Congressional staffers' conduct," the official told Fox News.
The statement was included in a report alleging that Rosenstein threatened to subpoena Republican staffers on the House panel during a closed-door meeting in January 2018.
One staffer wrote in an email at the time that Rosenstein issued a "not-so-veiled threat to unleash the full prosecutorial power of the state against us."
Soros's stock buy included 126,400 shares in the New York Times Company through Soros Fund Management LLC, the billionaire's New York City-based investment firm. The shares were valued at $3,046,000 at the time of purchase and are shown in a May 15 filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Soros's investment in the Times was for Class A stock holdings, which are publicly traded, as opposed to its Class B stock, which are privately held.
The acknowledgment of the purchase in the mid-May filings from Soros Fund Management appears to be the first time that Soros has invested in the New York Times Company in more than ten years. Soros's fund last reported shares in the company on its 2007 year-end report to the SEC, according to a review of the fund's quarterly reports.
Soros Fund Management is the vehicle used by the financier to purchase and sell various company holdings. The Times recently reported that Soros is a partial owner of Justify, the racehorse who won the Triple Crown, through his fund.
The senior vice president of communications for the New York Times did not respond to an email inquiry on Soros's stock investments in the company by press time. Michael Vachon, Soros's personal spokesperson and a spokesperson for Soros Fund Management, also did not respond to a request for comment on the purchase.
"The process of citizens making up their own mind which news source to believe is messy, and can indeed lead to 'fake news,' but to rob them of that ability, and to replace the straightforward accountability of editors and publishers for the news they produce with a centralized trust algorithm will not make democracy healthier but damage it further," Thompson said in a keynote lecture.
He added that if algorithms are to be the primary means for attempting to combat the purported rise of misinformation, then companies like Google and Facebook must be as transparent as possible in their efforts.
"We do not know, beyond inevitably imperfect and incomplete empirical observation, how the algorithms of the major platforms sort and prioritize our content, nor can we reliably predict or influence changes in those algorithms, nor in any sense hold the companies to account for them," said Thompson. "Full transparency about both algorithmic and human editorial selection by the major digital platforms is an essential preliminary if we are to address any of these issues. It would be best if this were done voluntarily, but even if it requires regulation or legislation, it must be done - and done promptly."
Thompson's speech came at an event hosted by New America's Open Markets Institute and the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University called "Breaking the News: Free Speech & Democracy in the Age of Platform Monopoly." Several other key figures and experts in the industry discussed the rising power of Google and Facebook, and what it means for journalism.
His urging to not place too much trust in artificial intelligence systems for deciphering the validity of news stories - and practicing openness when doing so - plays off of examples of errors that algorithms create.
Comment: He may work the the NYT - and therefore afraid that his paper's own fake news will be labeled as fake news - but he's still right. Censors - whether human or algorithmic - are by nature untrustworthy. Facebook certainly shouldn't be the one to do it - that's for sure.

Matteo Salvini, Geert Wilders, and Marine Le Pen during a meeting of right-wing politicians in Koblenz, Germany, January 21, 2017
While addressing the EU parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, Guy Verhofstadt, a Belgian MEP and lead Brexit negotiator for the bloc, singled out Britain's Nigel Farage, France's Marine Le Pen, and Dutch MP Geert Wilders as "fifth columnists" who "take Kremlin money and intelligence". The staunchly pro-EU Belgian then warned about a "circle of evil around our continent" stretching from "[Russian President Vladimir] Putin, [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan and, on a bad day, -and that's every day at the moment- even [US President Donald] Trump".
The name-calling escalated quickly as even Poland's Jaroslaw Kaczynski -who can hardly be called a Putin fan, to put it mildly- made it to the ranks of "Russia's men" in the EU. His pal, Hungary's PM Viktor Orban, as well as Italy's Deputy PM Matteo Salvini concluded the list of European right-wing politicians deemed traitorous by the bigwig.
Radio Sputnik discussed the possible reasons for Brexit with Joe Quinn, internet essayist, researcher, author.
"Our intelligence confirmed by three independent Syrian sources says that commanders of the so-called 'Free Syrian Army', backed by the American Special Forces operators, are preparing a serious provocation involving chemical warfare agents in Deir ez-Zor province," Russian Ministry of Defense Spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a statement released on Monday.
According to the MoD, FSA militants will reportedly use chlorine cylinders to simulate another chemical attack against civilians and provoke Western airstrikes on Syrian's government forces, according to Konashenkov.
"To imitate yet another 'chemical attack by the regime against peaceful civilians', the rebels brought canisters filled with chlorine," the statement read.

Although Mueller has been tight-lipped about evidence and witness identification up to this point, his team appears to have screwed up by outing journalists who "produced messages to the FBI" about Manafort's alleged "coaching up" on lobbying practices. Manafort was indicted in D.C. back in October 2017 for alleged financial fraud and violating lobbying disclosure laws. There's also a case against him in the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA).
"Special Counsel accidentally exposed names of former journalists and European politicians allegedly involved in Manafort's secret Ukraine lobbying. Just filed a new version with redactions," explained Washington Post reporter Rachel Weiner:
"Unredacted government exhibit showing alleged attempts by Manafort and Kilimnik to influence witness testimonies has been released. The witnesses, journalists [...] produced the messages to the FBI," the Atlantic's Natasha Bertrand added.

Early this week, the Italian government turned away the ship Aquarius, operated by the French-German NGO SOS Méditerranée, which has been conducting search-and-rescue missions in North African waters since 2015.
The League's Matteo Salvini, now Italy's Interior Minister, repeatedly accused NGO vessels such as the Aquarius of providing an illegal shuttle service for African migrants to Italy.
Comment: Macron is predictably duplicitous in saying he wants to help migrants while at the same time trying to offload them anywhere else he can. The move against mass migration in Europe (and the US) has begun and it'll take a lot more meddling from Soros and his puppets to stop it:

Comment: We wonder if Mueller and his team ever imagined that any of the Russian companies or individuals would even respond. Now they're in a pickle: forced to potentially turn over the 'evidence' based on which the Russians are accused. And Mueller either can't or simply won't do that. Said 'evidence' may turn out to be quite revealing, and that could be inconvenient for Mueller's sham investigation. So they're stuck trying to create conditions under which the defendants will give up their request, i.e., by saying they will only turn over documents once Prigozhin enters the U.S. and appears personally before the court.
