Snow carpeted Jerusalem and the eastern Mediterranean Thursday as a rare storm turned the holy city into a winter wonderland but brought misery to the region's Syrian refugees.

The cold snap, which has already caused major disruption in Athens and Istanbul, saw heavy snowfall in areas better known for their summer heat.

In the alleyways of Jerusalem's walled Old City, children pelted each other with slushy snowballs after the first flakes fell late on Wednesday.

By morning, snow crowned the golden-tipped Dome of the Rock in the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, Islam's third holiest site and carpeted the esplanade in front of the Western Wall, the holiest site where Jews can pray.

Israel's meteorological service reported that between 15 and 25 centimetres of snow had fallen overnight.

A still-developing winter storm is set to become a major nor'easter that will bombard New England with heavy snow and blizzard conditions this weekend.

Winter storm watches were issued for portions of eastern Massachusetts, eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island on Wednesday in anticipation of some of the worst conditions from the storm.

The watches will go into effect at 12 a.m. on Saturday. Areas farther south in the mid-Atlantic will not escape the storm as several inches of snow and major travel disruptions are expected.

"The area that we think will be hit the hardest and will be at risk for closures will be central and eastern Long Island to New England," AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

Southern Ocean storms cause outgassing of carbon dioxide

robot technology
© Fred FourieResearchers have examined the inaccessible waters around Antarctica using unique robot technology, and find that ocean storms in the region lead to outgassing of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Storms over the waters around Antarctica drive an outgassing of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, according to a new international study with researchers from the University of Gothenburg. The research group used advanced ocean robots for the study, which provides a better understanding of climate change and can lead to better global climate models.

The world's southernmost ocean, the Southern Ocean that surrounds Antarctica, plays an important role in the global climate because its waters contain large amounts of carbon dioxide. A new international study, in which researchers from the University of Gothenburg participated, has examined the complex processes driving air-sea fluxes of gasses, such as carbon dioxide.

Storms bring carbon dioxide-rich waters to the surface

The research group is now delivering new findings that shed light on the area's important role in climate change.

"We show how the intense storms that often occur in the region increase ocean mixing and bring carbon dioxide-rich waters from the deep to the surface. This drives an outgassing of carbon dioxide from the ocean to the atmosphere. There has been a lack of knowledge about these complex processes, so the study is an important key to understanding the Southern Ocean's significance for the climate and the global carbon budget", says Sebastiaan Swart, professor of oceanography at the University of Gothenburg and co-author of the study.

What's left of the snowstorm that dumped more than two feet in a couple far western Kansas counties began to taper off Tuesday night, but with cold temperatures forecast over the next few days, melting won't happen quickly.

While Interstate 70 reopened earlier Tuesday evening with the storm finally letting up, the impact on travel continued into late Tuesday night. Highways in southwest Kansas were also impacted by the snow. US-54 closed earlier Tuesday evening after a semi crash. For a few hours, this stranded some travelers in Pratt.

Tropical Storm ANA has caused damage in the Southern Region where M1 Road and Chapananga Bridge on the Chikwawa-Mwanza Road have been cut-off.
Tropical storm Ana has caused widespread flooding, power outages and killed at least one person in Malawi, officials said Tuesday.

Cutting path of wet destruction across southern Africa, the storm has blown from the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar, across Mozambique and into Malawi. In Madagascar the storm and earlier rains are blamed for 34 deaths and making an estimated 55,000 people homeless.

The Zambezi River area in central Mozambique was inundated by the storm's winds and rains.

In southern Malawi, flooding caused many houses to collapse, killing at least one person. Thousands more have been made homeless and have sought refuge in churches and schools. A major road has been cut off by flooding and many people are feared trapped by the surging waters, according to Malawi government officials.

Tropical storm Ana has caused widespread flooding in Madagascar, including in the capital city, raising the death toll from recent heavy rains to 34 people and displacing more than 55,000, officials said Monday.

With torrential rains continuing, Antananarivo's rivers are rising and officials are urging residents to leave low-lying areas of the capital and surrounding areas. Many residents have been evacuated in inflatable motorized boats.

Madagascar's meteorology department warned Monday of continued heavy rains. The tropical depression has moved across the Indian Ocean to the African continent, causing strong winds and rain in northern Mozambique.

The storm hit Madagascar over the weekend after the island had already experienced several days of rains, the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management said. The majority of those made homeless by the floods are in the capital's Analamanga area, where many low-lying neighborhoods are near flooded rivers.
