Ivory Coast - Deadly floods and landslides in Abidjan - 9.5 inches of rain in 24 hours

Heavy rain of 180 mm in 24 hours has caused flooding and landslides in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) where at least 5 people have died.

According to figures from the country's meteorological agency Sodexam, more than 180 mm of rain fell in Yopougon and 243 mm in Sassandra in 24 hours to 11 June 2023. Meanwhile Adiake saw 171 mm and San Pedro 201 mm during the same period.

The government reported a landslide occurred in the district of Yopougon Bel Air in Abidjan on 11 June. Several buildings were damaged and one completely destroyed. Five members of the same family died in the incident.

Three die, farmland and trees damaged as storms sweep across China

Three people died in eastern China after strong winds toppled a shipyard crane, authorities said on Sunday, as storms caused damage across the country, including large swaths of farmland.

The deaths of security staff in the city of Wuhu occurred after the 450-tonne crane keeled over on Saturday into the security post where they were stationed, the authorities said.

In Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province in eastern China, large trees were felled on Saturday, crushing vehicles and blocking roads, local media reported.

Heavy rainfall across Assam has triggered flash floods in various parts of the state on Sunday.

Water logging led to artificial flash floods in several areas of Gohpur, Nalbari, Goroimari and Udalguri, leaving people in distress.

Nalbari town has been submerged under water after a spell of rain with every street transformed into waterways. The Nalbari Municipality's inability to prevent such floods has stirred immense anger among the locals. Consequently, protests have intensified, with citizens expressing their discontent and demanding immediate action.

The four-lane road construction in Gohpur is facing mounting criticism as locals demand immediate action to address the recurring problem. The impact of the artificial floods caused by heavy rains is evident as the town remains partially submerged. Traders are gripped with fear as their businesses suffer due to inaccessible roads and inundated marketplaces.

Dozens killed as heavy rain, floods inundate northwestern Pakistan

Dozens of people are dead as torrential rains and flooding inundated parts of northwestern Pakistan on Saturday.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority said that 145 others were injured in flooding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The districts of Karak, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan and Lakki Marwat were especially hard-hit, according to the English-language newspaper Dawn.

Twenty-eight people had been killed as of late Saturday, Pakistani broadcaster Geo News reported.

A severe storm hit the Tuzla Canton yesterday night, and the worst was in Sapna, where, according to residents, water entered into residential buildings.

As it was said by Civil Protection in Sapna, one family was evacuated.

The road to Kalesija is interrupted, and the alternative routes are also not in operation. The situation is also difficult in Kalesija, where it is still raining.

Boy, 8, killed by lightning strike in Suriname

An 8-year-old boy was killed on Thursday in Suriname after being struck by lightning.

Surinamese police said the boy, who has not been identified, was at the Axwijk Sportcentrum (SOSIS) located on Marowijnestraat, Paramaribo, during a thunderstorm when the freak accident occurred.

Bystanders attempted to resuscitate the boy but their efforts were unsuccessful.

A doctor, who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, pronounced the boy dead.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Lightning strike kills two, injures five in Assam, India

Lightning killed two persons and injured five others in Sivasagar district on Friday. The incident took place at Chenimora Mishing village under Panbecha GP in the district on Friday morning when they were working at a paddy field, said officials of district administration.

The two killed in the lightning were identified as Ajoram Yein and Diganta Mili, while the injured who were rushed to the Sivasagar Civil Hospital were identified as Bikram Singh Yein, Rumi Mili, Ganesh Mili, Putala Yein and Urmila Yein.

According to locals, they were hit by a lightning strike at around 7 in the morning on Friday when they were working at the paddy field of Prabhat Mili.

Lightning killed two women ragpickers who were standing out in the open at the Dhapa dumping ground on Friday evening, police said.

Dhapa, off EM Bypass in the Pragati Maidan area, is one of Kolkata's largest dumping grounds where garbage from across the city is disposed of.

The police said Palani Mondal, 24, from Chandipur in Bhangar, and Kajla Naskar, 58, from Sonarpur, were struck by lightning around 5.30pm.

"We received information about the women and took them to the NRS Medical College and Hospital, where they were declared dead," said an officer at Pragati Maidan police station.

A close-knit community is picking up the pieces a day after a severe thunderstorm battered parts of southwestern Manitoba with softball-sized hail, leaving a trail of destruction and debris in its wake.

The storm that hit Oak River and Rivers, communities located northwest of Brandon, was unlike any storm resident Debbie Neely has ever seen before.

A close-knit community is picking up the pieces a day after a severe thunderstorm battered parts of southwestern Manitoba with softball-sized hail, leaving a trail of destruction and debris in its wake.

The storm that hit Oak River and Rivers, communities located northwest of Brandon, was unlike any storm resident Debbie Neely has ever seen before.

"It was pretty scary," she said. "The wind was crazy. The trees were bending over. There are no leaves left on the trees, and hail hitting the house - you just knew that it wasn't going to be good when you went and looked after."

The storm flattened farmers' fields, felled trees, smashed windows and damaged homes as hail pummelled the community. Pictures from the hard-hit areas show homes with siding that's been shredded by the downfall.

By Tuesday evening, a wave of thunderstorms reached the region of Budapest.

On Aranyhegy in Óbuda, at around 8:15 PM, a non-mesocyclonic tornado formed from one of the thunderstorm clouds.

Meanwhile, there was heavy rainfall in several other settlements in Hungary, with minor flooding in several places.
