Growing 40 feet deep sinkhole opens in front of home in Rapid City, South Dakota

A growing sinkhole has opened in front of a house in Rapid City.

As of yesterday the sinkhole was 40 feet, deep and an estimated 25 feet across.

City officials say the sinkhole continues to erode, but no one has been hurt. The gaping hole in the ground has closed the road to traffic and disrupting gas service for some residents.

The sinkhole was first reported by the homeowner yesterday morning.

New study gives more detailed picture of Earth's mantle

The chemical composition of the Earth's mantle is a lot more variable and diverse than previously thought, a new study has revealed.

According to a new analysis of cores drilled through the ocean crust, the mantle is made up of distinct sections of rock each with different chemical make-ups.

The chemical composition of the mantle has been notoriously difficult to determine with a high degree of certainty because it is largely inaccessible.

Scientists have traditionally relied on lava that erupts on the ocean floor to give them some idea of what the mantle is made up of, and so far studies have suggested that it's chemically mostly the same everywhere on the planet.

However in their new study, published in Nature Geoscience, the team of researchers led by scientists at Cardiff University have studied the very first minerals that begin to form when lava first makes contact with the crust at mid-ocean ridges.

Giant sinkhole appears near farm house in Russia

A giant sinkhole appeared in the village of Dedilovo of the Tula Region of Russia on the 8th of May. The huge hole in the ground the size of an ice hockey rink, in which one could put a five-storey building, appeared on the site where a tractor was working on the soil the day before. The edge of the sinkhole was just 40 meters from a house.

The household belongs to a resident of Tula, who bought this land just a short while ago. There is every chance for the sinkhole to grow larger. The sinkhole may swallow up the house as well.

Most likely, the phenomenon occurred as a result of the washout of limestone rock.

Local authorities haven't shown any reaction to the phenomenon. They only closed off the dangerous site around the hole.

Calf rescued from 40 ft. deep sinkhole in Warren County, Kentucky

Emergency responders in Warren County had their hands full Sunday evening after a calf got stuck in a sinkhole.

According to the Warren County Emergency Management Department, rescuers from the Alvaton and Gott Fire Departments were called out to a farm in Alvaton after a calf fell into a 40 ft. deep sinkhole.

After several hours of trying to figure out how to rescue the calf, it was successfully hauled out of the sinkhole and reunited with its mother, making it a Mother's Day to remember.

A huge sink hole almost 100ft wide has swallowed a patch of land in Dorset next to a local walking path.

It first emerged in February when a dinner plate-sized hole appeared - the land suddenly collapsed this week and created the enormous pit.

The chasm was caused by the surface of the land collapsing into an ancient hollow created during the last ice age.

Over the past three months it has been monitored by geologists as it gradually increased in size.

A giant sinkhole opened in rice fields in Indonesia, terrifying residents.
Residents of Kampong Sukabumi, Indonesia, were left terrified after discovering a huge 16 meters by 12 meters sinkhole in rice fields just 10 meters from their homes. Like during an earthquake, the huge crater collapsed in a loud noise and rumblings were felt several hundred meters away.

A very deep (12 meters) and large (16 meters length) sinkhole appeared suddenly in a loud boom, just 10 meters of resident homes, on Sunday, April 28, 2019, devouring a nice big part of a rice field.

A Kentucky zoo has closed while engineers study a newly discovered sinkhole nearly as large as a football field.

Louisville Zoo spokeswoman Kyle Shepherd told news outlets the sinkhole was found Wednesday in an undeveloped area away from any zoo animals. She said no people or animals were reported injured and no buildings damaged.

Louisville Metro Emergency Services Director Jody Meiman says officials estimate the sinkhole is about 50 yards by 85 yards (45 meters by 75 meters) and about 50 feet (15 meters) deep in spots.

An enormous sinkhole has appeared after an earth tremor in north-eastern Montenegro.

The 100-foot-deep hole in the snowy ground appeared near a water reservoir outside the town of Rozaje. It opened up moments after a slight earth tremor. Stunned residents insisted they had never seen anything like it before.

Ibrahim Halilovic, who lives nearby, told local media: "Nothing has ever happened like this in these parts in all the 91 years I have been around.

"I used to know the forest areas well because I was a shepherd."

The evacuation order was issued for 14 homes in the upscale Sunshine Coast subdivision.

Residents of 14 ocean-view homes on B.C.'s Sunshine Coast have been ordered to leave after an engineering report found that nearby sinkholes are putting them at risk.

As of 1 p.m. Friday, District of Sechelt declared a local state of emergency for the Seawatch neighbourhood perched above the west side of Sechelt Inlet north of Vancouver.

The area is surrounded by blue fencing to keep intruders - and residents - away from the homes.

"Future sinkholes or landslides could damage existing infrastructure such as underground utilities, roads or sidewalks, or private property including buildings and retaining walls," says the engineering report commissioned by the district. "Injury or even death are possible consequences."
