An 11-year-old girl is being treated in hospital following a suspected shark at a Spanish holiday resort.

The alleged attack off Grao de Moncofa, a hotspot for British tourists just south of Benicassim, left the girl with deep wounds on her foot.

After lifeguards plugged the heavy bleeding, she was rushed to the nearest medical centre on Saturday, according to local mayor Wenceslao Alos.

Mr Alos said it was likely she was attacked by a small type of shark measuring between 60cm and 70cm.

The lifeguards said they had 'never seen anything like' the attack but would not confirm it was a shark bite, El Periodico reported.

Mass fish death blamed on high river temperatures in Taipei City, Taiwan

Workers on a boat yesterday remove dead fish from the banks of the Keelung River in Taipei.
A Worker on a boat yesterday removes dead fish from the banks of the Keelung River in Taipei.
Large numbers of dead fish have washed up on the shores of the Keelung River from Zhongshan Bridge to Dazhi Bridge, probably because of consecutive days of high temperatures, the Taipei City Government said.

The city government said it expected to finish clearing the dead fish from the river today.

The Taipei Environmental Protection Bureau said that the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water near the dead fish was 3.5 milligrams per liter, which is about four to five times lower than normal.

The water temperature was 30.3oC, far higher than the average high temperature of 28.1oC in recent years, the bureau said.

Hurricane Harvey wreaks havoc on cattle across Texas

flood
Cattle ranchers in southeastern Texas had been moving livestock out of areas in the path of Hurricane Harvey for several days before the storm made landfall, but losses are likely as few anticipated the sheer breadth of the storm.

"Most of the producers started last Monday moving cattle out of the coastal region," said Texas A&M Extension specialist Tom 'Andy' Vestal. "By Tuesday or Wednesday they were asking producers who had cattle along rivers and watersheds to move their cattle. A lot of these guys have dealt with high water but nothing like this. Who could've imagined 40 to 44 inches of rainfall?"

About 1.2 million beef cows are in the 54 counties that have been declared disaster areas due to Hurricane Harvey, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The total is a "conservative estimate" and encompasses 27% of the state's herd, according to Texas A&M University livestock economist David Anderson.

Texas is the biggest cattle and calf producer in the U.S. and has the largest feedlot herd at 2.42 million head, according to the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. Gross income in 2015 from cattle sales and marketing totaled $11.5 billion, according to the Department of Agriculture.

As bear and leopard attacks continue, rising dog populations take its toll – 6264 dog bite cases in 2015-16
Encroachment on the fringes of forestland, change in crop pattern and lack of experts to relocate dangerous animals has increased man-animal conflict over the years in J&K, particularly in the valley.

Attacks by dogs have seen a steep rise over the past few years while leopard and bear attacks continue along the peripheries of forests.

For the last three weeks, wildlife officials have been trying to seize a man-eater leopard after it mauled a six-year-old boy to death and retreated into nearby woods of South Kashmir's Banderpora area in Pulwama district. However, apart from a couple of close shaves with the beast, nothing much has been achieved.

"We have activated six control rooms which are open round the clock for assistance. Six cages have been set at different locations. The locals sighted it twice but before we could reach the spot, it fled," said Bilal Ahmad Reshi, in-charge control room Tral.

Two people are in critical condition after their dogs viciously attacked them inside and outside their home near the Loop 101 and 35th Avenue on Saturday.

Phoenix firefighters said when they arrived at the home, they saw "lots of blood and chunks of flesh missing from the victims' bodies. "

At one point, the Phoenix Fire Department public information officer Rob McDade said it appeared the dogs were "eating their owners," with the owners suffering dog bite wounds to their arms, legs and torsos.

McDade told AZ Family crews that firefighters had to use their compressed air tanks to scare the dogs away and help get the man and woman to safety.

There were at least five dogs reportedly involved in the attack.
