Two killed by wild elephants in northern Chhattisgarh, India

Two persons were killed in separate incidents of elephant attacks in the forests of northern Chhattisgarh, a forest official said on Tuesday. The victim Mohini Bai (55) was trampled to death by an elephant in Kunkuri forest range of Jashpur district on Tuesday morning, while Dharamsingh Rathiya (30), died in a similar attack under Dharamjaigarh forest division of Raigarh district on Monday night, the official said.

Mohini, a native of Dholchua village, had gone to gather mushrooms from a nearby forest when she was attacked by a pachyderm, he said.

In Raigarh, Rathiya, a native of Gersa village, had gone to answer nature's call on the outskirts of the village when a tusker trampled him to death, he said.

Local forest personnel rushed to the scene after being alerted about the deaths and sent the bodies for post-mortem, it was stated.

Three-year-old girl killed in leopard attack in Nashik, India - 6th such death for district in 14 months

A three-year-old girl was killed in a leopard attack in a village in the Igatpuri tehsil of Nashik district.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening when the child was outside her home at the Kananwadi village, towards Bhandardara, in Igatpuri.

The child received serious injuries on her neck and died while undergoing treatment at the Nashik district civil hospital on Wednesday.

Initially, she was taken to nearby rural hospital and, thereafter, shifted to the Nashik district civil hospital here where she died on Wednesday while undergoing treatment.

According to the forest officials, the girl and mother were just outside their home which is on the outskirts of the village. A leopard suddenly pounced on the girl and dragged her a few metres away. Her father and mother started shouting as they saw a leopard dragging the child.

A rogue elephant has killed at least 16 villagers in the past two months in central India after likely being expelled from his herd "for bad behaviour", a wildlife official said Thursday.

The mature male, believed to be 15 or 16 years old, has been on the rampage in the tribal Santhal Pargana region of Jharkhand state ever since he was separated from the herd of 22 elephants.

"It's likely he was in heat and was expelled because of his bad behaviour or sexual rivalry with other males," Satish Chandra Rai, regional divisional forest officer, told AFP.

"We are studying his behaviour and a team of 20 officials is constantly trying to track him because our first priority is to protect the animal."

The elephant, which is now on its way back seeking to reunite with the herd, has managed to outwit officials with his sheer speed and unpredictability.

Three killed, another 3 injured in bear attack in Jharkhand, India

Three villagers, including two siblings, were mauled to death and three others injured in an attack by a wild bear near Barkol village at Burgarh block in Garhwa district on Friday evening, police said on Saturday.

The deceased are identified as Anit Gidh (35), his brother Sumit Gidh (38) and Raju Minz (40). Their bodies have been sent to the sadar hospital for the post mortem. Those injured were identified as Chotu Gidh (40), his wife Maryam Lakra (35) and Kamlesh Gidh (30).

They are admitted to the sadar hospital and one of them was referred to Rims in Ranchi.

Sources said some villagers were returning to their homes in Barkol village when a wild bear attacked them. While some managed to escape, the six were not so lucky and three of them died.

Bird handlers are devastated after a mind-boggling 5,000 homing pigeons seemingly disappeared during a race across the UK.

"We've seen one of the very worst ever racing days in our history," pigeon hobbyist Richard Sayers wrote in a Facebook post chronicling the feathery fiasco, which occurred Saturday after 9,000 racing birds took off from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, on a journey to the northeast. And while the 170-mile round-trip flight should've only taken three hours, over half the avian competitors were still unaccounted for as of last night.

They were reportedly part of 250,000 pigeons released in approximately 50 racing events across the country — with just 10% returning on time and another tens of thousands reported missing, the Sun reported.

A dead whale washed onto the beach at Asilomar Tuesday, according to the Hopkins Marine Station.

The station said it was a fin whale, the second-largest type of whale on the planet.

They said it appears that the whale had not reached adulthood yet and was about 40 to 45 feet long. Its cause of death has not been released.

Birds are going blind in the Washington region
Hundreds of birds are dying without explanation in parts of the South and Midwest.

Wildlife experts in at least six states and Washington, D.C., have reported an increase in sick or dying birds in the past month. The most commonly afflicted birds are blue jays, common grackles and European starlings.

"We're experiencing an unusual amount of bird mortality this year," said Kate Slankard, an avian biologist with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "We have yet to figure out what the problem is. The condition seems to be pretty deadly."

Symptoms include crusty or puffy eyes, neurological signs of seizures and an inability to stay balanced.

Experts said the birds have been behaving as if they are blind and exhibit other abnormalities, such as not flying away when people get close.
